Dark Secret - The mage's parents were active members (read Shamans) of The Universal Brotherhood.  When the mage was a child they helped recruit new members into the Brotherhood.  It doesn't matter that they were a child and didn't really know what was going on.  Anyone who finds out about this will obviously have a problem with the character.

The characters personality and totem are a result of A) the betrayal of their parents/parents' organization, combined with a rough time in foster care (see child of insect shamans), and B) the fact that everytime their past comes to light they have lost friends and colleagues.
