  1. "So Donny," I ask, "What're we getting into this time?"
  2. I'm looking out the window as I ask the question. We're on Oakdale Ave, heading south towards some destination only he knows the full details of. My eyes are on the neighborhoods, barely lit by scattered street lights. Oakdale is hardly what I'd call scenic, but it's all I've got to look at while I'm sitting shotgun. Like most of this part of the city, the buildings are mostly gray, and there's just enough dirt and reality to keep the tourists from coming by. I've been down better roads on a Friday night, but I've also been down worse.
  3. Donny, the pale-faced, razor-stubbled gawk who's driving, tends to take me places like this every time we go out. He's got a knack for finding the good things in bad places, and if there's one thing I've learned from him, it's that there's no shortage of either in this city. The key, he says, is to know where to look and what to say. I'm no good at either. That's what I have him for.
  4. "We're headed to a house party down in the southeast side of town" he responds as we stop at a red light. "Home of three girls named Jessica, who've got a reputation for throwing the best kick-ins you ever saw."
  5. "Three girls named Jessica?" I see my reflection in the window make a weird face. "Known for throwing parties? You fucking with me here?"
  6. "No fucking, man. They live in the Alice Griffith apartments. This ain't my first time at their place."
  7. "Alice Griffith? You mean the projects? Now I know you're fucking with me."
  8. "Just wait, man. You'll see."
  9. Believe it or not, this is usually how it goes. Whenever I ask him what he's about to get me into, he comes out with an angle that sounds too weird to be true. Most of the time, he's telling the truth, but occasionally he likes to hit me with a lie or two just to see if I'll fall for it. 'Testing my bullshit meter', he calls it.
  10. If that's the case, my bullshit meter deserves a solid B+ by now. I'd say it deserves an A, but unfortunately for me, he's succeeded a few times.
  11. "So what should I expect from the infamous Jessica House?" I press on. "Anything different from the usual?"
  12. "Depends on what you mean." he responds. "The house itself looks like a punk rock music bar messed around with a Pagan witch house. Lotta tour posters from bands you never heard of, lotta weird symbols and cultist-looking shit." he pauses. "Might feel weird if you've never been to a place like that before, but you'll get over it."
  13. I glance away from the window long enough to shoot him a look. "That's not what I meant, and you know it."
  14. I can see a smile messing with the corners of his mouth as he continues. "They're into a lot of the dime-a-dozen shit. Weed, coke, all kinds of booze...Couple of their get-togethers have had pills before, but you know I stay away from those."
  15. "And the other half...?" I ask pointedly.
  16. He can't keep the smile off his face anymore. "Bitches, bitches and more bitches. The game is running 24/7 at their place, and at least two of them play for both teams."
  17. Now I'm smiling right along with him. There's more, I'm sure, but it won't matter until I'm there. 'Sex and drugs' is all I need to hear. I turn back to the window, satisfied for the moment.
  18. "There's just one thing." he adds, taking my attention off the not-so-green pastures of Oakdale Ave once more. "Keep that phone put away unless you're getting a number from somebody. The girls don't like videos. You'll be out on the street before you can say 'release form'."
  19. "How'd you find that out?"
  20. "Friend of mine got tossed out for it. Tried to film a girl doing a line off another bitch's ass." He shakes his head. "Caused me a lotta trouble that night. I almost got tossed out with him."
  21. "I'll be sure not to make the same mistake he did."
  22. We continue down Oakdale before making a few turns. I stare quietly out the window the whole time. Streets and neighborhoods pass me by, and I think about the prospects and possibilities. Eventually we turn onto Fitzgerald, and I speak up again.
  23. "What are these Jessica chicks like?" I ask.
  24. Donny seems to consider that question for a moment. "They're kinda weird, honestly. I get the feeling they're all, y'know, in the head." He takes a hand off the wheel long enough to make a couple of circular finger movements next to his temple. "I mean, from what I've seen, their brand of crazy is the right kind if you're looking for a party. But it's hard not to notice after a while."
  25. "Break them down for me. What's each of them like?"
  26. "Well, shit, let me think..." he says, scratching at a spot on his chin.
