- Many people attended. Atli of Bjarg owned a fine grey stallion. It was of the same stock as Kengala, with a black stripe down its back. Atli and his father, Asmund, were proud of this horse. The brothers Kormak and Thorgils at Mel owned a brown stallion, a tough and trusted fighter. It was agreed that they would pit their horse against Atli's from Bjarg. Many excellent stallions were to be there.

- The stallions were then led forward, while the other horses were kept father out on the riverbank. They were tied together as a group, standing on the back just above a deep pool.

- The horses were fighting their way towards the river when Odd struck at Grettir, landing his goading-stick on his shoulder-blade just as Grettir turned. It was no small matter; the skin ripped back over the muscle, although Grettir bled little. At that instant the horses reared up. Grettir got under the haunches of his horse and drove his goad into Odd's side so hard that three of his ribs were broken. Odd was flung out into the pool along with his horse and all the other horses that were tied together.
