In Sgt. Byrd, the extra life is a butterfly jar in the higher cave section at the end of level. You lose time for ignoring the opportunity for a TP anticipation.

In Icy Peak, the first extra life is a skill point for standing on the red thief's pedestal. The second is in the path to the final area in the route.

If your lives are too low to be recovered in that way, omit death abuses until you're on track.
