Two petty thieves hold up a tobacconist run by mother and daughter in the working class village of Vallaces, Madrid. Between the proprietor's unwillingness to cooperate and the criminal's persistence, this seemingly non-lucrative and commonplace crime escalates into a hostage situation. The village square soon is overrun by hoards of policemen, reporters, protesters, and politicians all trying to weigh in on the crisis. As the tension increases outside, the atmosphere in the shop becomes rather less urgent as the holed up occupants become more familiar through rounds of cards, alcohol, dancing, and flirting.
