  1. Act 1
  2. Maya's apartment is located in a complex down the road from the MC's. The MC first encounters Maya while rummaging through abandoned apartments for supplies.
  3.
  4. MC finds Maya curled up in bed with a revolver to her temple. When she notices him, she aims the gun at him and asks if he's come to kill her for her sins. Terrified, he stammers an explanation that he was only looking for food, and that he'll leave if she wants. She lowers the gun and seems to recognize something in him. Suddenly, her entire demeanor changes. She thanks him for "keeping me from doing something very silly just now," and cajoles MC into letting her cook for him. MC is unsettled by the woman, but as he eats, he begins to feel a strange sense of comfort. Maya dotes on him and mothers him and he enjoys it.
  5.
  6. He tells Maya that he should get going, because his girlfriend is waiting. Maya becomes very cold, just like she was when MC first walked in on her. As he leaves, she remains sitting at the dining room table, eyes downcast, saying nothing. He hears her crying after he shuts the door.
  7.
  8. Sometime later, the MC decides to visit her again to make sure she's okay. Maya greets him with open arms and cooks for him again, despite being low on food herself. MC tells her about the survivors in the church and suggests that Maya go there. Maya asks if the MC is living at the church too and he tells her no. She quickly decides she won't move to the church either.
  9.
  10. MC offers to bring her some food from the church when he gets a chance. She thanks him, and -- despite the fact that he refused -- goes to get him a second helping of food. MC looks around the apartment a little while she cooks, and comes across a police uniform with "Sterling" written on the nametag. He realizes that this isn't Maya's apartment, but Naomi's.
  11.
  12. The player can choose whether or not to ask her about it. Asking her about it is the correct choice to remain on Maya's path, but her reaction to it is violently negative. She yells at him and tells him to leave. The MC can also tell Naomi that Maya is living at her apartment the next time he sees Naomi. Telling Naomi makes it impossible to access Maya's path.
  13.
  14. Seemingly rejected by Maya, MC moves on with the business of surviving. However, he feels inexplicably drawn back to Maya's apartment complex. He lies to himself that he's just going there for supplies, not to visit Maya. To this end, he rummages through some of the other units. In one of them, he finds two dead zombies -- and a picture on the wall of Maya with her husband and son.
  15.
  16. This is Maya's real apartment, and the zombies are Maya's former family. MC notes how uncannily the son in the photo resembles him.
  17.
  18. Again, MC begins to worry that Maya may be a danger to herself. He visits her again. She's very gloomy, but apologetic for how she acted on the last visit. MC lets slip that he found her old apartment. Maya breaks down and tells MC the story of how she was forced to kill her son and husband after they turned. She says that MC is the only reason she hasn't killed herself.
  19.
  20. Maya asks him to keep visiting, but -- without even realizing it -- calls MC by her dead son's name. If the player agrees to keep visiting her, the player is locked into Maya's path.
  21.
  22. Act 2
  23. MC visits Maya every day. He brings her food and enjoys her mothering. However, it becomes increasingly apparent that Maya's feelings are more than platonic. To make matters worse, MC has to hide Maya's existence from Sara and the church survivors alike. MC tells Sara that the time he spends away from the apartment is because he's helping out at the church -- but he tells Naomi and the bro that he's spending time at home with Sara.
  24.
  25. The double life doesn't last for very long. During a visit to MC's apartment, Sara complains to bro about how much time MC is spending at the church. Confused, bro replies that MC hasn't even been to the church for a couple days. Sara becomes suspicious of where MC is spending all his time, and confronts him about it once bro leaves. MC lies that he's just gathering supplies, but Sara remains suspicious.
  26.
  27. In order to bolster his cover story of helping out at the church, MC begins to split his time between Maya and church more evenly, taking a more active hand in helping the church survivors. He helps them gather food and medical equipment, forging friendships with Naomi and Elly.
  28.
  29. Slowly, more and more zombies begin to appear in the neighborhood, and worse, they appear to be becoming more aggressive. Naomi worries that the church cannot continue to fend them off. Bro decides that the best way to deal with the increasing number of zombies is to draw them into one place with a trap. He rigs up a huge sound system inside a car so that it can play music as loudly as possible. His plan is to drive it somewhere far from the church and leave it playing, luring the zombies away. He calls the car the Soundmaster 9000.
  30.
  31. Everyone else, including MC, is less than overwhelmed by the invention. They think it's dangerous and boneheaded. MC, to keep the bro from doing anything stupid, can choose whether to cut the wiring in the sound system or not.
  32.
  33. MC continues to visit Maya on a daily basis and they continue to grow closer. MC feels reservations about Maya's mental state, especially as she begins to call him by her son's name -- and her husband's name -- more and more often. On one visit, she has a delusion that MC is not only her son, but also a zombie. She puts a gun on him and tries to shoot, but it misfires. She snaps back to reality, breaks down into hysterics, and apologizes to MC. She tells him that he should go away and never come back, because a "crazy old woman like me" can only hurt him. But despite his better judgment, the episode only makes him feel more strongly toward Maya, and his visits continue undeterred.
  34.
  35. One day at the church, MC overhears that Naomi is planning to visit her old apartment to get a couple things. He decides to break the news to Naomi that someone else has taken up residence there. Naomi is none too thrilled, but with some convincing by the MC (and with Elly backing the MC up), she decides that it's okay because she's not using the apartment anyway. She tells the MC to go to her place and get the things she wanted -- and to tell the new tenant to keep the place clean. Bro is curious about the woman living in Naomi's apartment, and deduces that this is the place MC has been sneaking off to all this time. He tags along with MC to meet her.
  36.
  37. At Maya's place, Maya is clingier than usual, but curt with bro. She also continually calls MC by her husband's name. MC does his best to explain Maya's history to the now very confused bro. Though MC approaches the explanation in a roundabout way, bro instantly understands that Maya is using MC as a replacement for her family. After they leave, the bro chastises MC for getting involved with her and tells him that he thinks MC should stop seeing her. MC begins to take a hard look at his relationship with Maya, but doesn't want to end things with her.
  38.
  39. MC decides to take a break from visiting Maya for a day or two while he sorts his feelings out. But Maya, crestfallen at his absence, visits MC's apartment herself. Sara realizes that this is the woman MC has been sneaking off to see. She's outraged, and the two women end up in a shouting match. Maya begins to gloat that MC loves her more than he ever loved Sara. MC finally decides that he's had enough. He tells Maya that she's crazy and that he never wants to see her again. Maya leaves in a state of shock.
  40.
  41. Act 3
  42. MC spends a couple days inside his apartment with Sara, trying to repair their relationship. Sara is thrilled by the attention but MC is unsettled by her rapidly deteriorating mental state, and can't bring himself to feel love for her. He begins to miss Maya.
  43.
  44. Bro visits and tells them that the military has taken up defense of the church. He suggests that the MC and Sara move there. MC is all for the idea, but Sara isn't, especially once she finds out that Maya is moving to the church too. She tells MC that if he goes to the church, she'll have to take "drastic measures" to stop him. MC begins to fear for his and Maya's safety.
  45.
  46. MC spends the next day trying to convince Sara that he's broken things off with Maya and that they'll be safer at the church. His attempts to convince Sara to leave are interrupted by the bro's return with news that the military may be planning to attack the church survivors. Bro says that he, Naomi, and some of the others are secretly working on setting up a safehouse to move the church survivors into. He tells MC where the safehouse but says that for now MC should stay in the apartment until things blow over.
  47.
  48. When bro leaves, MC realizes that Maya is at the church now, and he feels a need to warn her. When Sara goes to sleep, he sneaks away to the church. The soldiers guarding the church don't want to let him in, but he sells them a story about how his mother is inside and needs some medication that he brought. They reluctantly let him through. He finds Maya and warns her in private about the slaughter.
  49.
  50. The two decide that if the military didn't want to let anyone in, they certainly won't want to let anyone out. Knowing how well-guarded the church is now, MC recruits Elly to help them find a way out, because she knows the layout of the church better than anyone. She leads them down to the basement where they escape via an old storm duct. As the three emerge from the storm duct in a wooded area a ways away from the church, Elly turns to go back, explaining that she has to get everyone else to safety. But just as she says this, they hear tanks and gunfire, and realize that the military has already begun to kill the church survivors. Maya and MC take a distraught Elly to the safehouse that Naomi and company were working on. Naomi is grateful to them for getting Elly out alive, but guilt-ridden at what happened to the others.
  51.
  52. Maya, claiming to be shaken up, convinces MC to accompany her back to her apartment. Once there, they have a long conversation and the MC admits that he came to save her because he loves her. He says he's not sure what kind of love it is, and that he doesn't think their relationship is healthy. She shushes him and tells him that love is never unhealthy. She gives him a massage and ends up having sex with him. She asks him to break up with Sara once and for all, and move in with her. The MC says he needs some time to think about it, and goes back to his apartment.
  53.
  54. At his apartment, Sara confronts him about where he's been. He tries to lie, but she says she knows he was with Maya. Sara attacks MC with a baseball bat, knocking him out. She leaves the apartment, presumably to murder Maya.
  55.
  56. MC wakes up a few hours later and races to Maya's apartment on foot. On his way, he runs into bro, who was coming to offer MC and Sara a place at the new safehouse. MC explains what has happened and bro accompanies him to Maya's apartment. When they arrive, they see Sara through a window. She has Maya gagged and tied to a chair. Sara slowly circles the chair, stopping randomly to hit Maya with the bat.
  57.
  58. MC wants to rush in and stop it, but bro warns that if they do that, Sara might kill Maya outright. He says they have to distract Sara. He tells MC to wait while he goes and gets something.
  59.
  60. MC waits outside Maya's door and listens to the one-sided conversation on the other side. Sara rambles about how an ugly old woman like Maya could never take Sara's place in the MC's heart. She describes in detail the tortures she plans to inflict on Maya before killing her. MC's resolve to wait for the bro to return is growing weaker.
  61.
  62. Sara says she's going to gouge Maya's eyes out with a butcher knife. This is the last straw for MC, and he decides to barge in.
  63.
  64. BAD END
  65. If the player opted to disable the Soundmaster 9000, the bro doesn't return before the MC barges in. Sara blinds Maya and then does the same to the MC, killing them both.
  66.
  67. GOOD END
  68. If the player left the Soundmaster 9000 alone, bro comes screeching into the parking lot, playing music at full blast. Sara goes to the window to see what the commotion is. She and the bro have a short conversation and Sara realizes this is MC's doing. She turns around just in time to see MC behind her. He stabs her with the knife that she intended to use on Maya, and pushes her out of the window -- where a pack of zombies, drawn by the Soundmaster 9000, appear to devour her alive.
  69.
  70. Bro and MC untie Maya. She's badly wounded but she'll live. Bro looks out the window and sees that Sara's corpse isn't on the ground anymore. He points out, "isn't this basically how Jason dies at the end of all the Friday the 13th movies?" The joke doesn't go over very well with Maya and the MC.
  71.
  72. Epilogue
  73. Bro leaves so that he can ask Elly to treat Maya's wounds. Elly agrees, and becomes a live in nurse for a couple weeks while she helps Maya convalesce. During this time, MC buries Maya's husband and son and has Elly give them their last rights.
  74.
  75. When Maya is healed, Elly leaves again for the safehouse and asks whether MC and Maya will be coming too. MC considers it but ultimately says he wants to stay at the apartment and make a home there with Maya. MC then thanks Elly for all her help. Elly is flattered and gives MC a kiss on the cheek, saying it was no problem.
  76.
  77. After Elly is gone, Maya appears unhappy. MC asks her what's wrong, and it becomes clear that she's jealous of Elly. MC tells her she has nothing to be jealous of. Maya replies, "I know -- because you have me to protect you from girls like HER." Credits.
