- "You'd have done better to run while you could, mongrel," Louis boomed. "This here sword? It could turn you into so much as thin air on my word."
- "No, it can't," Jack taunted. "Disappear me, and you disappear the sheath," Jack said, waving the sheath in front of Louis. "Then, guess what? No godlike power for poor Louis. Savvy?"
- Louis froze at the thought that he might accidentally send both Jack and the sheath away with the next move he made. Jack smiled proudly. Louis's dismay lasted only for a minute.
- "You're right--I can't vanish you." He slashed with the Sword again, this time cutting a button from Jack's coat. It clattered to the floor. "But the Sword of Cortes is still a sword. It can cut you to shreds just fine."
