51. Jack Regan is a hard edged detective in the Flying Squad of London's Metropolitan Police (called 'the Sweeney' from the Cockney rhyming slang 'Sweeney Todd' = 'Flying Squad'). He pursues villains by methods which are underhanded and often illegal themselves, frequently violent and more often than not successful.

 53. I discovered this TV series back in 1977, In France. My homeland. I enjoyed it, although I was only 13. I found it realistic, with very good actors and characters too. Hard boiled cops vs hard boiled gangsters. Far better than Starsky and Hutch series, and American ones in general, always on the same frame. The same built.

Here, you found many good surprises in the screenplays. Many clichés were broken. I love being surprised.

This kind of stories reminds me Bill James' novels, about Brit police force from the inside, sort of UK version of Joseph Wambaugh's books - POLICE STORY, NEW CENTURIONS. But with a good emphasize on hoods too. Interesting indeed. And with avoiding the stereotypes. Characters very deep described, with their own problems: work and family.

One french movie shot in 1971: MAX ET LES FERRAILLEURS could have been a SWEENEY episode. A rough cop ready to ANYTHING to frame a gang of robbers. Cops using hoods methods to achieve their goals.

No good or bad cops vs good or bad gangsters.

That's exactly what I like.
 54. The Professionals, Starsky and Hutch and Knightrider. What do they have in common? They have all aged terribly! Have you also noticed that they are all cop shows? Well heres one that hasn't

The Sweeney! This show first hit our TV screens in 1975 and even tough it was launched more than 30 years ago is still widely talked about today. The famous scenes with the Jaguars and cortinas, the famous guest appearances, the gun play and gritty realism. But of course we all remember the SHUT IT! The realism all starts at the end of many of the episodes. Such as the episode entitled MAY where the villains get away and are not caught. John Thaw is here in one of his most memorable roles, along with Dennis Waterman. The show was pulled after 4 Series as John Thaw and Dennis Waterman both agreed that they should stop the show before people became less interested. A good idea as many programmes had once been popular but fell into the TV black hole as they were carried on too long.

 56. This is actually a sports broadcast tune called "Rugby Special" and can be found on the CD 'BBC Sporting Themes'. The Aussie con artists appeared in two episodes and the cheerful theme that accompanied them added a more lightwight element to the otherwise hard-edged show. a5c7b9f00b
