  18. City College of San Francisco has learned that software viruses that can be used for identity theft purposes have infected some of the College’s computers for several years. The College has hired a firm that specializes in computer system security, USDN Inc., to assist in a vigorous effort to determine how widespread the viruses are, and what if any information has been illegally transferred to third parties outside the College.
  19.
  20. The College’s Information Technology Department estimates that it will take about two to three weeks to complete an assessment of the College’s most critical servers. Preliminary results from USDN’s work thus far have shown that one server, and the computers connected to it in a lab for international students did in fact transmit information outside the College. In an effort to increase its network security, the College is now reevaluating the settings for its two computer firewalls and is upgrading its antivirus software. The College also reminds all employees and students that it is good practice to change their passwords and to monitor their personal financial accounts on a regular basis. If any irregular activity is detected they are advised to contact the College’s police at 415-239-3200.
  21.
  22. The College will provide more information to employees and students as soon as the USDN report is completed.
