- Homework: write a list of things you used to be afraid of but no longer are
- scary/frightening
- creepy - “It makes your skin crawl.”
- spooky - a little bit scary, but maybe in a fun way, like a ghost story or Halloween decorations
- terrifying - extremely scary
- phobia - irrational fear, diagnosable if it interferes with normal life
- In the UK, from most to least common:
- spiders, people and social situations, flying, open spaces, confined spaces, heights, cancer, thunderstorms, death, heart disease
- “stranger danger” - the idea (taught to children) that there are strangers everywhere waiting to kidnap them
- (The education campaign is counterproductive, because most children who are kidnapped are taken by family members.)
- coulrophobia - fear of clowns
- “Pennywise” is the name of the clown from Stephen King’s book, “It”
- ---
- germophobia - fear of germs and dirt
- exposure therapy: treatment for phobias that involves exposure to the trigger, usually starting with something like a cartoon picture of a spider and moving onto handling live spiders in a controlled environment
- ---
- (No homework because almost every student will be new.)
