Democrats Name Presidential Nominee

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Former Vice President Joe Biden clinched the Democratic nomination for president in a Thursday night cheering crowd in his home state of Delaware.

State party chair Peg Riggs made the announcement to a cheering crowd at a formal dinner at the Holiday Inn in Newark -- where Biden gave a rousing speech saying "there's no better place for a run at the presidency" than Delaware.

"Tonight, more than ever, we know that Delaware stands with America, and we are there in our strength and wisdom and together, as a people, we will deliver a great message of hope and opportunity for the future," said Biden, who first announced his candidacy in the state that holds the earliest primary.

Speeches by Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders were broadcast by MSNBC and were shown online for national audiences as they were unable to take place in person.

Following the speeches, CNN projected that Biden had won the nomination. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Biden led Sanders by 61 percent to 35 percent.

In his speech, Biden told Delawareans they are the reason he's decided to run and to run hard. He also said there is no doubt that he'll be the nominee, based on how Democrats responded to his message in the state over the past few months.
