  3. Movie Supervisor: Miyamoto Yukihiro
  4. TV Series Director, Movie Supervisor. At the site of production Yukihiro Miyamoto will reflect for us the process of making the first two movies.
  5.
  6. The beginning of movie production
  7.
  8. '''Kirara''' How did you first hear about the news about making a Madoka movie?
  9. '''Miyamoto''' I think winter last year (2011). But before then, I hear the idea of a sequel being talked about. Director Shinbo even has said, "I want to make second season, and if possible keep making more" type of things. Back then I didn't thought about a movie, since I thought we're making a tv sequel.
  10.
  11. '''Kirara''' Then once it's decided to make the movie edition, what was discussed in teh initial meet and greet?
  12. '''Miyamoto''' Shinbo has already decided to make the compilations first. Afterwards, before in TV edition because of time constraints the parts that haven't been unified need sto be redone or adjusted for the movie edition. For example background changes, you also need to make the character colors match as well. Color directions need to be completely redone. So it end up as, "this has to be changed, this has to be fixed..." And in the end all the scenes have to be worked on.
  13.
  14. '''Kirara''' Then when did actual of these kidn of editing work really begins?
  15. '''Miyamoto''' Director Shinbo starts first, making adjustments to the sotryboard, deciding what to cut, what to keep, and made a design-document type of overview. From this work begins from January, until February to March or so it ends. Then since by March I have other work I can't get away from, I officially took over begining from APril.
  16.
  17. '''Kirara''' That was right when t he trial compilation made with the tv edition was tested on teh big screen.
  18. '''Miyamoto''' When watching the test screen I had a bad feeling about all this (laughs). Showing the tv edition's art on the big screen, the drawings look very rough. There're so much that need to be changed. I got worried that at this rate the editing work would never end.
  19.
  20. Different from the TV series
  21. The Difficulties of the Compilation
  22.
  23. '''Kirara''' Once the work was handed over, did Shinbo also give you any directions?
  24. '''Miyamoto''' Various details about the compilations, edit for before and after recording. Looking at the promotional videos, Shinbo found many more places that needs to be corrected. For example, the position and size of each character, how change in perspective will increase or narrow. There's also issues regarding coloring, even up to recording saturation management and etc, the work he hand to me includes everything. The hardest is layout adjustment and additional scenes. Because adding new scene result in longer length, work is also increased. Work was very tight. For example, the fight between Kyouko and Witch Sayaka, Kyouko cut off the Witch's right hannd, we added a scene where Madoka drops out from her hand. This part barely finished right before the deadline.
  25.
  26. '''Kirara''' There's a week break between every episode in the tv series, but the movie edition doesn't have no gap from start to finish. Are there parts of the movie edition that naturally requires special attention to?
  27. '''Miyamoto''' In this area there isn't "must control this within this time" kind of strict restriction, but because the screentime can be lengthen, related workload icnrasily significantly. Epsecially for the second movie. The first movie compiles the first eight episdoes, so the editing direction is cut as much as possible. But the second movie only include the last four episodes, to maintain balance with teh first movie, not only could I not cut but I also need to build up from the fountain of the tiv series.
  28.
  29. '''Kirara''' It finally end up as 130 minutes for the first movie, 110 for the second.
  30. '''Miyamoto''' At the beginning I didn't plant o add Luminous in the second movie. using Luminous in the second movie's OP was an abrupt decision. Because the OP is very well received just using it for the first movie is such a pity, seems like that was the reason, so it was decided just before the premiere. It was quite a surprise, I was thinking, "How did it suddenly get 90 seconds longer..." and such.
  31.
  32. Movie Edition Compilation workers
  33.
  34. '''Kirara''' Can you introduce briefly all the staffs that worked on the compilation movies? First is ***, what kind of work is this vice director job do?
  35. '''Miyamoto''' *** was origianlly working as animator particiated. Back then, he helped edited the TV series's episode one Mami transform sequence, which Director Shinbo was very pleased with. He felt since we have such a talented person here working for us, might as well put him in a good position, so let him become an assistnat director. *** then has been repsonsible for working on important scene's vision effect editing. In general, Sayaka and Madoka lying on the grass sequence, Homura shooting Kyubey at the night then admonish Madoka sequence, and also the first time Kyouko appears in teh observatory also. *** often suggest "Maybe I should give Kyouko fangs in this scene" "how does this scene look like this" and such suggestion, he has been a great help.
  36.
  37. '''Kirara''' This compilation, animation is *** and ***
  38. '''Miyamoto''' *** is responsible for unifying the various transitions. TV edition has different episode directors, so each episode's transition the character art style will have slight changes. *** is responsible for unifying Kyubey's art work. Director Shinbo is very concerned with Kyubey's face getting off target.
  39.
  40. '''Kirara''' From *** point's of view, what scenes have a lot of impact.
  41. '''Miyamoto''' It has to be ***'s Kyouko's death scene in the cemetary. A red cross diagonal, inside reflects sinlight twisted cross scene. This scene became a 70 second long shot isn't easy at all, as expected that *** did a wonderful job. Afterwards Homura and Kyubey in teh ceremony dialogue was wonderful as well. Ther's also Kyouko's death scene, a lot of new shots, the animators, for example *** ***, they all did amazingly.

  43. Afterwards
  44. Looking towards Rebellion Story
  45.
  46. '''Kirara''' I think a lot of fans end up going to the theatre to watch madoka many times. If you have, can you talk about the joy of repeat viewing?
  47. '''Miyamoto''' I think after repeat viewings you get a greater awareness of the intent and motives for each scene. For example OP's madoka ablum growing up, first time watching people probably won't notice, but rewatch the audience may notice that such memorial will be completely erased, and become rather battered by the feeling. This is all *** whose reponsible for the OP's wonderful work.
  48.
  49. '''Kirara''' Now that the compilation has finished, work for the new movie has begin. You have already begun working on it, right?
  50. '''Miyamoto''' The compilation just finished, so I can now take a breather, the new work is in my hand. Storyboard has finished, right it's being inspected by Director Shinbo.
  51.
  52. '''Kirara''' Did Miyamoto take a look at Gen's screenplay yet?
  53. '''Miyamoto''' Yes, I have. If I can be honest, even thought I feel once it's done it'll be an amazing story, but I don't know how it actually turn out makes me very nervous. I feel this screenplay once animated wil be incredible, but looking at the storyboard, the incredible script got even more fulfilling (laughs). Shinbo is very diligently inspecting the storyboard, I think the final will be frightening. But what's truly scary is the completeness and amount of work involved (laughs).
  54.
  55. '''Kirara''' After the compliation there's the new movie's preview, butu it was only a preview. The fans are all very eagerly awaiting.
  56. '''Miyamoto''' I actually went to watch in teh teahtres, the nearby audience after watching the preview actually said, "Fnially a preview but you onyl show me this!" (laughs). When I heard him I quietly apologize to him. "Sorry that you can only see this, but I never say I will show you everything!" (laughs)
  57.
  58. '''Kirara''' Miyamoto went to watch personally?
  59. '''Miyamoto''' I paid for my own ticket to watch. Even though I got gift tickets, I gave them to my parents. My parents took them to watch, my mom even send me a message to tell me "we seen it." Even though they had seen anime I had worked on before, they told me "I don't really get it." But this time, they said, "I understand" so I am very glad (laughs).
  60.
  61. '''Kirara''' Besides family, are there otherse who talked to you about their feeligns about teh movie?
  62. '''Miyamoto''' My close friends would send me a textlike "I seen it 7 times," "I watch it 3 times today" and such messages. I coudn't help but reply "You don't really need to watch it that many times." But some actually replies, "2 meter tall, lively Homura-chan can only be experienced in the theatre!" such message to me. The new work we will work hard to continue make it. So while the movies are still in theatre, please go watch thhe two meter tall Homura-chan (laughs).
