　王城へは正面から乗り込んだ。

　門番の兵士は当初、ザノバの顔を見て訝しげな表情をした。
　来るとも思っていなかったし、連絡もなかった。
　来るとしても馬車で来ると思っていたのだろう。
それが、まさかの徒歩。
　唯一の親衛隊であるジンジャーの姿も見えない。
　怪しんでくれと言ってるようなものだったが、いくつかの質問の後、本物のザノバだと判明すると、すぐに姿勢を正して道を開けてくれた。

　彼らの動きを見ると、この国における王族という存在がいかに特権階級であるかがわかるな。王族ってだけでコレだ。
　いや、血の粛清が行われて間もなく、過敏になっているのもあるか。

　ともあれ、謁見の許可を求め、控室へと移動する。
　そこで待つこと小一時間。
　すんなりと謁見の許可が降りたらしく、謁見の間へと通された。

We entered from the front of the Royal Castle.


At first the gatekeeper guards looked at Zanoba's face doubtfully.

They thought that he wouldn't have come, and he hadn't contacted them either.

If he came, they'd have expected him to use a horse carriage too.

Unthinkably, he came on foot.

His only royal guard, Ginger, couldn't be found either.

There were a few things to be suspicious of, but after asking some questions and they confirmed that Zanoba was the real thing, they immediately straightened their posture and opened the way for us.


You can really tell just how privileged the royalty in this country are just by watching these guards, huh. They're acting like this just because he's royalty.

No, since it hasn't been long since the purge of the royal family, it might also be because of the nervousness of the guards.


At any rate, we asked for an audience, and moved to the waiting room.

We waited there for nearly an hour.

It seems we were permitted an audience without any problems, and were allowed to head to the audience room.

　謁見の間。

　そこには、五人の人物がいた。
　たった、五人だ。
　護衛の兵士は一人も立っていないのだ。

　中央。
　ひときわ玉座に座る人物は、よく覚えていた。
　少なくとも、外見はさほど変わっていない。
　小さな背丈に、大きな態度。
　彼はなんら変わる事なく、玉座にふんぞり返って座っていた。
　パックス・シーローン。
　よく見ると記憶より若干大人びているし、精悍さのようなものも持っているように見えるが、基本的には変わらない。

　彼のすぐ隣に座るのは、綺麗な少女だ。
　年格好は中学生ぐらい、白いドレスを身にまとい、ややクセのある水色の髪を持つ少女だ。
　ミグルド族によく似ているが、ロキシーとは髪の色が若干違う。
　別の種族だろうか。

　彼女はうつろな目をしていた。
　頭にコロネットが乗っている所を見ると、王妃だろうか。
　パックスは、彼女の背中側に手を回して座っていた。
　一見すると背中に手を回しているだけにも見えるが……。
　俺にはわかる。あれは尻を触っているのだ。
　バレないとでも思っているのだろうか。
　まあ、そんな性奴隷みたいなのはどうでもいい。

　俺の目は少女と逆隣の位置に立つ、一人の男に釘付けになった。
　年の頃は４０歳中盤ぐらいだろうか。
　体つきはガッシリとしており、腰に剣を帯びているものの、防具は軽装だ。
　決して強そうには見えないし、剣呑な気配も放っていない。
　もし道端であっても、俺は何の警戒もなしにすれ違ってしまうだろう。

　だが、その頭部。
　やつれて頬骨のつきだした陰気な顔。
　眼帯を付けた右目、生気の無い落ち窪んだ左目、ゾンビのような頬の陰。
　古い映画に出てくる、海賊船の船長のような印象を受ける。

　一言で言い表わせば。
　『骸骨のような顔をした男』だ。
　確信した。
　こいつが、『死神』ランドルフ・マリーアンだ。

Kingdom of Shirone, Royal Castle.

Audience room.


There stood five people.

Just five people.

There was not a single guard soldier.


In the centre.

The person sitting on the conspicuous throne was someone I remember well.

At the very least, his appearance hasn't changed much.

A person of small stature, and a big attitude.

He hadn't changed at all, and was slouching arrogantly on the throne.

Pax Shirone.

If you looked carefully, you'd see that he was a bit more adult, and his arrogance was a bit greater, but essentially he was unchanged.


Sitting right next to him was a beautiful girl.

She was of about a middle schooler's age, and wearing a white dress, had slightly wavy blue hair.

Though she looked similar to a Migurd, her hair colour was a little different from Roxy's.

A different tribe, huh?


Her eyes were empty.

I could see a coronet on her head; was she the queen?

Pax was sitting her near with his hand around her back.

Though at a glance it simply looked like his hand was on her back...

I could tell. He was touching her butt.

Did he think no one would know?

Well, I suppose no one cares what happens to a girl who's basically a sex slave.


My sight was glued to the man standing on the other side of the throne.

Is he in his 40's, perhaps?

His build was solid, and he was wearing a sword by his waist, but he was lightly armoured.

He didn't seem strong by any means, and he didn't give a feeling of danger either.

It's likely that if I came across him on the street, I'd pass him without any vigilance at all.


But that head of his.

He had a worn out and gloomy face, with protruding cheekbones.

His left eye was sunken and lifeless, and he wore an eyepatch over his right eye. His shadowy face looked like that of a zombie.

He gave the impression of a pirate captain in one of those old movies.


If I had to say it in just a few words...

『A man with a face like a skeleton』

I'm sure of it.

This guy is 『Death God』 Randolph Marianne.

「陛下。ザノバ・シーローン。召喚に応じ、魔法都市シャリーアより馳せ参じました」

　ザノバは謁見の間に進み出ると、すぐに膝をついてそう言った。
　パックスを陛下と呼び、頭を下げることになんの抵抗も無いらしい。
　俺もそれに倣うが、ローブの下でガトリングをランドルフに狙いを定めておく。

　パックスはひざまずくザノバを見下ろし、少女の尻から手を離した。
　その手をペロリと舐めつつ、口を開いた。

"Your Majesty. Zanoba Shirone, present. In response to your summons, I have made haste coming from Magic City Sha'Riah."


When we entered the audience room, Zanoba immediately got down on his knees and spoke.

It seems that he had no resistance at all to referring to Pax as 'Your Majesty', and bowing his head.

I did like Zanoba, but under my robes I readied the aim of my Gattling Gun at Randolph.


Pax overlooked the kneeling Zanoba, and removed his hand from the girl's butt.

Whilst licking that hand, he spoke.

「……随分と、早かったではないか」
「火急とあらば、急ぎにて」
「ほう、てっきり、国内のどこかに潜伏していたのかと思ったぞ。なにせ、国境を超えたという報告もなかったしな」

　俺たちは手紙が届いてから、一ヶ月ぐらいでシーローン王国に着いている。
　普通なら一年は掛かる距離だ。
　そう思われても仕方のない速度だろう。

"You've come quite quickly, haven't you?"

"As it was an emergency, I made haste."

"Ohh? I surely thought you were hiding somewhere in the country. After all, there was no news that you passed the borders after all."


We arrived at the Kingdom of Shirone roughly 1 month after receiving the letter.

Normally it was a distance that would take half a year.

There's no doubt that it was a speed that made it seem that we were in the country already.

「道中、敵国の襲撃もありえましたゆえ、身分を隠して移動いたしました」
「国内に入ってもか？」
「国内に入ってからこそ」
「なるほどなぁ」

　パックスはフンと鼻息をひとつ。
　こちらが想定より早く王都についた理由は聞かないつもりのようだ。
　こちらも、嘘しか言うつもりもないが……。
　パックスは椅子に座り直し、俺の方を指さしてきた。

"As there were attacks from the enemy nation en route, we moved under cover."

"You entered the country under cover as well?"

"It was because we were entering the country that we particularly needed to hide."

"I seee."


Pax snorted once.

It seems he had no intention of asking why we arrived quicker than he had expected.

We have no intention of telling anything but lies either, but...

Pax corrected his posture on the throne, and pointed at me.

「で、そいつは？」
「陛下もご存知の通り、ルーデウス・グレイラット殿にございます」
「名前を聞いているのではない」
「では、なにを？」
「なぜここにいるかと聞いている」
「戦ともなれば、強力な魔術師はいればいたほうが良い故、連れてまいりました」

　ということにしてある。
　この世界において、魔術師は戦争において非常に重要な役割を持っている。
　中級、上級の魔術師であっても、陣地作りには非常に役立つし、
　大群に対しての範囲魔術は非常に有効だ。
　一対一、真正面からのタイマン勝負なら剣士の方に分があるが、多対多、一人ひとりの重要度が低くなればなるほど、魔術師が重要となる。
　聖級、王級魔術師ともなれば、戦時中の国の国王が三顧の礼を持って迎え入れたい相手である。

　が、パックスは鼻で笑った。
　自重げな笑みを見せつつ、俺とザノバを交互に見る。

"And? About him?"

"As Your Majesty knows, it is Rudeus Greyrat-dono."

"I wasn't asking for his name."

"Then...?"

"I was asking about why he's here."

"If there will be a battle, it would be better to have a strong magician with us, thus I have brought him along."


And that's our pretext.

In the wars of this world, magicians play a particularly important role.

Even those of Intermediate Rank and Advanced Rank are extremely useful in creating encampments, and if you have them in a large crowd, area of effect magic becomes extremely effective.

Though swordsmen still have their role to play in one on one fights at short distances, when it's many on many, the importance of the individual falls, and you can understand how magicians become important.

If they're Saint Ranked or King Ranked magicians, then during wartime they'd become people a king would openly welcome.


However, Pax snorted in scorn.

Whilst displaying a laugh filled with self-confidence, he looked at Zanoba and I in turn.

「ほう、そうか。てっきり、余を殺すために用意した手駒かと思ったぞ」

　パックスがそう言った途端、両脇に控える死神以外の２人が殺気を持った。
　あの二人が、王竜王国から連れてきたという騎士だろうか。
　確か、１０人いるという話だったな。
　この場にいるのは死神を含めて３人。
　てことは後７人、どこかにいるのか。
　正直、あんまり強そうじゃないな。

"Ohh? I see. I was sure that you had brought him here to kill me."


The moment he said that, the two others beside the Death God let out killing intent.

So these two were the knights from the Kingdom of the Dragon King (KDK) huh?

If I remember correctly, it was said that there were 10 of them, right?

Including the Death God, there are 3 here.

So where are the other 7 then?

Honestly speaking they don't seem very strong though.

「まさか……陛下に仇なすつもりは毛頭ございませぬ」
「ほう。お前は簒奪（さんだつ）を許すのか？」
「はい。別段、前王に忠誠を誓っていたわけでもございませぬゆえ」
「しかし、余に忠誠を誓いたいわけでもあるまい」
「…………」

　ザノバは答えなかった。
　パックスはその態度に面白くなさそうに鼻を鳴らした。
　叛意アリ、とも取れる態度だが、パックスは気にしなかったらしい。

"Never! ...I have not in the least any intention of becoming Your Majesty's enemy."

"Ohh? You'll forgive the usurpation?"

"Yes. It is not as if I had particularly sworn loyalty to the late king."

"However, it's not as if you want to pledge allegiance to me either."

"..."


Zanoba couldn't answer.

Pax snorted unamusedly at Zanoba's attitude.

It was an attitude that could be considered rebellious, but Pax didn't seem to care.

「まあよい。兄上……いや、ザノバよ。お前がどのような思惑を抱いていようと、どうでもいい」

　パックスはそう言って、背後に立つ騎士を顎で指し示した。

"Well, whatever. Ani-ue... No, Zanoba. I don't really care what ulterior motives you hold."


Pax said that, and gestured to the knights with his chin.

「見よ、王竜王国より連れてきた我が騎士たちを」

　パックスの言葉で、騎士たちが頭を下げた。
　死神はあくびをしていたが。

"Behold, the knights the KDK have presented to me!"


With those words, the knights bowed.

The Death God was yawning though.

「特に、この男は凄いぞ。
　七大列強第五位。『死神』ランドルフ・マリーアンだ」

　という紹介を受けて、死神はビクリと身を震わせた。
　罰の悪そうな顔で一歩前に出てくる。
　咳払いを一つ。

"This man is particularly amazing, you know? He's the 5th seat of the Seven Major Powers, 『Death God』 Randolph Marianne."


Having been introduced like that, the Death God started with a jolt.

He stepped forward, looking embarassed or awkward.

He cleared his throat.

「ご紹介にあずかりました。ランドルフ・マリーアンともうします。
　生まれは魔大陸。種族は雑種。人族と長耳族と不死魔族と、あと幾つかの混血です。
　職業は騎士。
　王竜王国大将軍シャガール・ガルガンティス麾下、王竜王国・黒竜騎士団に所属しております。
　主な仕事は殺人。
　誰でも殺します。
　流派はありませんが、北神流と水神流をかじっております。
　巷では『死神』と呼ばれているゆえに殺人狂と誤解されますが、そのような事はございません。料理が趣味の、心優しい男です。
　以後、お見知り置きを」

　ペラペラと一通り喋った後、ニタリと作り笑いをして、後ろに引っ込んだ。
　なんともやる気のない態度だ。

"As introduced, I am Rudolph Marianne. I was born on the Demon Continent. I'm of mixed tribe. I'm from the Human Race, the Elven Race, the Immortal Demon Tribe, and a few others. My job is being a knight. I'm a subordinate of the KDK Generalissimo Chagall Gargantis, and a member of the KDK's Order of the Black Dragon. My chief responsibility is killing people. I can kill anyone. Though it's not at an amazing level, I do dabble in the North God and Water God Styles. I'm often known as the 『Death God』, and as such, there are misunderstandings about me being a mad murderer, but that is not so. I am a gentle-hearted man whose hobby is cooking. It is very nice to meet you."


He talked continuously, and from beginning to end he had forced smile plastered on. After that, he retreated.

He didn't seem motivated in the least.



Chagall[ʃəˈɡɑːl/]

「普段はこの通りだが、強いぞ？
　なにせ、兄上たちの親衛隊を瞬く間に全滅させ、余に王位をもたらしてくれた立役者だからな」

　ほとんど一人で片付けたのか。
　さすが七大列強。
　衰えたとは聞いたけど、別に弱いわけじゃない。

"Though he usually acts like this, he's strong you know? I mean he completely wiped out all our older brothers and their imperial guards, and was the lead figure in making me king."


He basically finished everything himself, huh?

As expected of the the Seven Major Powers.

I'd heard that he had weakened, but that doesn't mean that he's weak.

「どうだ、ザノバ。貴様が連れてきたソイツと、どちらが強いか試してみるか？」

　……そういう流れか。
　やはりパックスはヒトガミの使徒か。
　ここで俺に死神をぶつけて、殺害する……。
　罠という割には、なんの捻りもないが、そんなものか。

"How about it, Zanoba? Shall we pit him against the guy you brought, and see which of them is stronger?"


Is that how it's gunna be?

So Pax really is a disciple of Hitogami, huh?

Pitting the Death God against me here, and killing me...

For a 'trap', it really has nothing witty about it at all, but is that how it's gunna be?

「お戯れを。これから北と戦争をしようという時に、手駒をこんな所で使い減らしていかがしますか……」

　ちらと見ると、ザノバのこめかみに冷や汗が浮かんでいる。
　こいつ、もしかして、俺の事を守ろうとしてくれているのだろうか。

　パックスはというと、そんなザノバの姿を、実に楽しそうに見下ろしていた。
　自分の言動で相手が狼狽したり、慌てて言い繕うのが楽しくて仕方ないらしい。
　そういえば、昔、こいつに捕まった時も、そんな感じだったな。
　自分が上の立場にいる時はイキイキとするのだ。
　そして、その顔を見て満足し「冗談だ」と流すのだ。

　しかし、パックスがヒトガミを通じているのなら、無理にでも俺と死神を戦わせようとしてくるはずだ。
　今回は戦うのがわかっている。
　心の準備はバッチリだ。

　なんなら、先手を打つか？
　死神は隙だらけだ。
　いや……。
　仮にも七大列強ともあろう相手が、そう簡単に隙を見せているとは思えない。
　一見隙だらけに見えても、攻撃すれば一瞬で反応し、反撃してくるに違いない。
　オルステッドも、死神はそういうのが得意だと言ってたしな。
　などと考えていると、パックスはふっと肩の力を抜いた。

"You speak in jest. To use up our forces here at a time when we're going to do battle with the north...?"


When I glanced at him, I found that Zanoba had cold sweat on his forehead.

Could it be that this guy is trying to protect me?


As for Pax, he looked like he was really enjoying himself, looking down on Zanoba in this state.

It seems that it can't be helped that driving the other perosn into confusing with your words, and seeing them glossing over things in a panic, is fun.

Speaking of which, in the past when I was caught him him, he was more or less like this too, huh.

When he was in a higher position, he'd get all excited.

Then with a face filled with satisfaction, he'd say "It was a joke" or something.


However, if Pax is listening to Hitogami, even if it's unreasonably, he should try and have me battle the Death God.

I know that I'll be fighting this time.

My emotions are completely prepared.


In that case, shall I take the initiative?

The Death God is full of openings.

Nah...

I don't believe that a member of the Seven Major Powers would let their guard down for even an instant.

Even if it looks like he's full of openings, there's no mistaking that the moment I attack, he'll react, and I'll be countered.

Not only that, but Orsted too had said that this type of thing was the Death God's specialty.

I was thinking all sorts of things like the above, when Pax suddenly relaxed.

「ふん、冗談だ。真に受けるな」

　あっさりと引き下がった。
　あれ？
　やらないのかな？
　ランドルフは最初からやる気が無いみたいで、またあくびをしている。
　二時間しか寝てないわー、とか言い出しそうなほど、あくびが多い。
　心底つまらなさそうだ。

"Hmph, it was a joke. Don't take it so seriously."


He readily stepped down.

Oh?

Is he really not going to do it?

From the start, Randolph had no motivation, and yawned once again.

His yawn was big enough that it almost seemed like he was going to say "I only got in two hours sleep~".

He looks bored fromt he bottom of his heart.

「ルーデウス・グレイラットの噂は余も聞いている。
　アスラ王国にて、甲龍王ペルギウスの助力もあったとはいえ、水神レイダや北神三剣士をも倒したそうじゃないか。
　ランドルフは、王竜の陛下からの大事な預かり物だ。
　負けるとは思わんが、大怪我でも負わせたら、陛下に合わせる顔もない」

　パックスはやれやれと肩をすくめた。
　そして、椅子に座りなおし、改めてザノバを睥睨した。

"I've also heard the rumours about Rudeus Greyrat. In the Kingdom of Asla, though there was the assistance of Armoured Dragon King Pelugius, didn't he defeat the Water God Reyda, and the North God's Third Disciple as well? Randolph is an important person left in my care by His Majesty the Dragon King. Though I don't think he'd lose, if he even sustained a great injury, I wouldn't be able to face His Majesty."


Pax went 'my, my' and shrugged his shoulders.

He then sat back down, and looked over Zanoba once more.

「それにしても兄上（・・）。随分と警戒しているようだな」
「それは、陛下と喧嘩別れのような形となりましたゆえ」
「確かにな……だが、余は兄上と争うつもりはない」

　パックスはそう言いつつ、足を組んで頬杖をついた。
　偉そうなポーズ。

"At any rate, Ani-ue, you're quite guarded, aren't you?"

"That is because I parted after a fight with you, Your Majesty."

"That's true, huh... But, I have no intention of picking a fight with you, Ani-ue."


Whilst saying that, Pax crossed his legs and rested his chin on his hands.

It was an arrogant pose.

「だから、許してやってもよいぞ」
「寛大なお言葉、ありがとうございます」
「よい」

　頭を下げるザノバに、パックスは笑った。
　余裕の笑みだ。
　勝ちを確信している者の笑み。
　戦えば勝つけど、許してやろうっていう、上から目線の笑みだ。

"That's why I'll forgive you."

"Thank you very much for your magnanimous words."

"It's fine."


Pax smiled at the bowing Zanoba.

It was a leisurely smile.

He was the smile of one who was sure of his victory.

Though he'd win if he fought, he forgave him; it was a smile of one looking down from above.

「むしろ、礼を言いたいのはこちらの方だ」
「？」
「なにせ、あの事件のおかげで、余は変わることができたのだからな」

　変わることができた？
　チビデブであるパックスの外見はそう変わっていない。
　いや、よく見ると、脂肪が減っている。
　腹回りや顎のラインもスッキリして見える。首も太い。全体的な筋肉も増えただろうか。
　あれはもうデブじゃないな。
　……いや、内面の話だろうけど。

"On the contrary, the one who wants to give his thanks is me."

"?"

"I mean, it's because of that incident that I was able to change, after all."


Able to change?

He still looks like the same fat midget.

No, if I look carefully, he's lost a bit of fat.

I can see that the body line around his belly and chin have slimmed. His neck is thick too. He might ahve gained muscle all around his body too.

That's no longer what you'd call a fatty.

...Well, at least if we're talking about what's inside.

「確かに、王竜王国に人質として送られた時は、理不尽さに涙もした。兄上やルーデウス・グレイラット……お前に恨みを持ち、暗澹たる日々を送っていた」
「……」
「だが、変われた」

　パックスは、ちらりと自分の隣に座る少女を見た。
　少女がそれに気づいてパックスに視線を返す。
　絡み合う視線、何か信頼のようなものが見える。

"Certainly the time when I was in the KDK as a hostage, it was absurd enough that I cried. Ani-ue, and Rudeus Greyrat... I resented you, and passed my days in gloom."

"..."

"But, I was able to change."


Pax glanced at the girl sitting next to him.

Noticing this, the girl returned the gaze.

In their entwined gazes, you could see some sort of trust.

「少し、昔話をしてやろう」
「……」
「あれはそう、王竜王国にきてしばらくして、誰にも構ってもらえず、余が腐っていた頃。余は一人の少女に出会った」

　俺たちの返事を待たず、パックスの昔話が始まった。
　まあ、聞かない理由も無い。
　ヒトガミのことをベラベラとしゃべるかもしれない。

"Let me tell you a bit of an old story."

"..."

"It was... Right, a little bit after I arrived in the KDK, wasn't cared about by a single person, and was just rotting away. I met a girl."


Without waiting for our response, Pax began his story of the past.

Well, I have no reason not to listen.

He might end up blabbering about Hitogami.

「その少女は、いつも一人で庭にいた。
　庭で一人、何をするでもなく、寂しそうにしていた。
　誰に話しかけるでもなく、誰に話しかけられるでもなく。
　気になって何をしているのか訪ねても、別に何もしていないという」

　パックスは、その少女がどうにも気になったらしい。
　毎日のように庭に出て、その少女に話しかけたのだそうだ。
　少女は言葉少なだが、パックスに返事をしてくれた。
　少女は何も知らない子で、パックスの会話を嬉しそうに、楽しそうに聞いた。
　パックスはなんだかそれが嬉しくて、あれこれと話題を見つけてきては彼女と会話をしたという。

"That girl was always alone in the garden. Alone in the garden, not doing a thing, just looking lonely in the garden. Not speaking to anyone, and unable to speak to anyone. Even when I was curious, and asked her what she was doing, she would reply that she wasn't really doing anything."


It seems that Pax couldn't help but wonder about that girl.

It seems that each day, he would talk to the girl in the garden.

Though the girl was of few words, she replied to Pax.

The girl was a child who didn't know anything, and delighted about her conversation with Pax, happily listened.

Pax felt somehow happy about it, and found this or that topic to talk to the girl about.

「しかし、ある日、噂を聞いた。
　シーローンの出来損ないが、王竜王国の出来損ないに近づいている、とな」

　出来損ない同士、お似合いだ。
　けれどまぐわいでもしたら、出来損ないが生まれてしまう。
　おお、これは一大事だ。この王宮は出来損ないだらけになってしまう。
　そんな噂だ。

"However, one day, I heard a rumour. That Shirone's good-for-nothing was getting friendly with the Kingdom of the Dragon King's good-for-nothing."


'Two good-for-nothings; what a great pair.'

'But if they had sex, a good-for-nothing would be born.'

'Ohh, that'd be a serious affair. The royal palace would be filled with good-for-nothings.'

It was that kind of rumour.

「余はな、噂をしていた奴らをひっとらえ、首をはねてやりたかった」

　シーローン王国でなら、そんな事を言う奴は、例え場末の酒場の酔っぱらいでも許しはしなかった。
　でも、できなかった。

"You know, I really wanted to catch the guys who spread that, and take their heads."


Had they said that in the Kingdom of Shirone, even if it were said drunkenly in some bar in the outskirts of town, they wouldn't be forgiven.

But, he couldn't do it.

「王竜王国では、余にはなんの力もなかったのだから」

　とても、悔しかったという。
　こいつらを見返してやりたいと思ったという。
　でも、パックスにできたのは、ベッドに潜り込み、悔しさに涙で枕を濡らすだけ。
　泣き疲れて、あいつらは馬鹿だと思い込むだけ……。

　――ではなかった。

　パックスはその日から、生活態度を改め、禁欲的に、そして勤勉になったのだ。

"After all, I hadn't any power at all in the Kingdom of the Dragon King."


It was extremely frustrating for him, he said.

He wanted to take revenge on them, he said.

But, all Pax could do was lie in bed and soak his pillow with tears of frustration.

After getting tired of crying, he could have just thought of them as idiots, and forgotten about it...


――――but he didn't.


From that day onwards, Pax changed his attitude towards life, and started afresh a lifestyle of abstinence and diligence.

「どうしてそうしたのか、自分でもよくわからん。
　ただ、余は元々、特別に頭が悪いわけでは無かったのだ。
　出来損ないではないという事を証明したかったのかもしれん」

　違う環境で、違う人と出会い、違う感情が生まれ、違う行動に出る。
　心機一転という奴だろう。
　わかる。
　俺も、この世界に来た頃はそうだった。

　ともあれ、その後パックスは努力した。
　魔術に、勉学にと励んだ。
　剣術や運動の才能は身体的なハンデのためあまり頑張らなかったようだが、体つきを見れば怠惰な生活を送っていたのでないことはわかる。

　そして今から約１年半前。
　王竜王国で開催されている学問の大会――模試みたいなもので、パックスは好成績を残した。

　そこで、王竜王国の国王の目に止まった。
　国王は、「人質も当然で他国に送られてきたにも関わらず、未来を諦めぬその姿勢、誠に天晴である」と、パックスの姿勢を評価した。
　何か褒美を与えようという話になったらしい。
　要するに、気に入られたのだ。

　パックスは謁見の間に呼び出され、王に聞かれた。
　金銭がいいか、地位がいいか。
　なんだったら、シーローン王国からの亡命を許し、我が国の一員としてやってもいい。
　太っ腹にもそう提案する王に、パックスは自然と言ったという。

『第十八王女様を所望します』

　第十八王女ベネディクト・キングドラゴン。
　母親は素性の知れない魔族の女性。国王が戯れに召し抱え、戯れに産ませた子供。
　王位継承権は無く、十八王女という名は付いているものの、王族として認められていないような子。
　感情が薄く、出来損ないと言われた王女。
　パックスは、そんな王女を妻に迎えたいと言ったのだ。
　王竜王国の国王は少しばかりの逡巡の末、パックスの要望を受け入れた。

"Why I did such a thing, even I don't know. It's just that originally, I wasn't particularly dumb. I might have wanted to prove that I wasn't a good-for-nothing."


In a new place, after meeting a new person, feeling new emotions, and doing things with a new attitude.

It's probably what people call 'turning over a new leaf'.

I understand.

I too, was like that when I came to this world.


Anyhow, after that, Pax put in great effort.

He was zealous in magic, and education.

Since he had a physical handicap in talent from swordsmanship and exercise, he didn't try very hard in those, but you could tell from his body that he wasn't living a lifestyle of laziness.


And about a year and a half after that, at a scholarship convention held in the KDK――――something like the mock trials, Pax was able to get good results.


Because of that, he caught the attention of the KDK's King.

The king said, "In spite of being sent to a foreign country as a de facto hostage, that attitude of yours that didn't give up on the future is truly praiseworthy." and recognised the value of Pax's attitude.

It seems that it became a conversation about giving him a reward.

The point is that he was pleased with Pax.


Pax was summoned to the audience room, and was asked by the king.

'Would money be fine? Would a position be fine?'

'Or if it suits you, we'll let you defect from the Kingdom of Shirone, and become a member of our country.'

To the king who offered such generous options, Pax spoke as if natural.


『I wish for the Eighteenth Princess.』


The eighteenth princess, Benedicuto Kingdragon.

Her mother was a demon of unknown birth. The king amused himself with her, and a child was born of that amusement.

She had no right to inherit the crown, and despite having the title 'eighteenth princess', she was a child who wasn't recognised as royalty.

She didn't hold strong emotions, and was called a good-for-nothing princess.

Pax said that he wanted to take such a princess as his wife.

After hesitating for just a moment, the King of the Kingdom of the Dragon King accepted Pax's request.


[Dornote: Her name is actually Benedict, but that's a guy's name right? I can't help but think of the Pope, right? So mmmm. Benedicuto. Slightly less... 'old german man'.]

「他の娘ならまだしも、ベネディクトをくれてやるのは惜しくない。
　とはいえ、名ばかりとはいえ、ベネディクトも王女である。
　貴様には相応の地位が必要だ」

　そう言った王竜王国の国王は、ひとまずパックスを一度シーローン王国に返還しようとした。
　パックスをシーローンに戻し、シーローンで要職につかせてから、王女を嫁に出す。
　人質として、別の王子を送ってもらう。
　メンツを保つべく、そういう形にしようとした。

　だが、これをシーローン側はやんわりと拒否した。
　パックスはシーローン王国では問題ばかり起こしていたし、
　死ぬまで王竜王国にいてほしい、というのがシーローン王の思惑だったのだろう。
　他の王子を人質として差し出すのが惜しい、ってのもあるか。

　王竜王国の王は激怒した。
　ほぼ属国であるシーローンが言うことを聞かなかったのが、王に怒りに触れたらしい。
　国王はパックスに王竜王国最強の騎士である『死神』ランドルフと、パックスに悪い感情を抱いていない黒竜騎士団の騎士をつけ、クーデターを勃発。
　シーローン王族を皆殺しにし、血塗られた玉座をパックスに与えた。

"It's disappointing that you asked for her. It would have been better had you asked for any other woman. But even so, even if only in name, she is still a princess. If I'm to give her to you, you must be of suitable station."


Saying that, the King of the Kingdom of the Dragon King first of all sent Pax back to the Kingdom of Shirone.

Pax would return to Shirone, hold an important office, and the princess would be given to him as a bride.

As for a hostage, they asked for a different prince to be sent.

So that face could be kept, it was decided that they'd ask that.


But, this proposal was gently refused by Shirone.

Pax had caused nothing but problems in the Kingdom of Shirone, and King Shirone wanted him to stay in the Kingdom of the Dragon King until he died.

It might have also been regrettable to send another prince as a hostage in his place.


The king of the KDK was outraged.

Shirone which was basically a vassal state refused to do as they were told, and incurred the wrath of the king.

The king gave the KDK's strongest knight, 『Death God』 Randolph, to Pax, as well as knights of the Order of the Black Dragon that didn't hold ill-will towards, Pax, and staged a coup d'état.

The Shirone royal family was massacred, and the blood-smeared throne was given to Pax.

「…………そうして、余は全てを手に入れた。地位に名誉、愛する女に、最強の手駒まで、な」

　パックスはそう言いつつ、隣に座る少女の肩を抱き、脇に立つ死神に目線をくれた。
　少女はぽっとした顔を赤らめ、死神は肩をすくめた。
　話の流れからすると、あの少女がベネディクトか。

　あれ？
　でも、今の話にヒトガミが出てこなかったな。
　パックスは信託とかをもらって動いてたんじゃないのだろうか。
　いや、心機一転したあたりは怪しいが……。

　でも、今の話だと、むしろ怪しいのは、王竜王国の王の方だ。
　いきなりキレてるし……ヒトガミの助言をもらってそうだ。
　いや、使徒が一人とは限らない。
　パックスも、王竜王国の王も、って可能性がある。

"...Like that, I gained everything. From position to honour, to the woman I love, and even to the strongest pawn."


Whilst saying that, Pax wrapped his arm about the shoulders of the girl sitting besides him, and looked at the Death God standing by his side.

She suddenly turned red, and the Death God shrugged.

Judging from the flow of the conversation, that girl is Benedicuto, huh?


Hmm?

But, the story just now didn't mention Hitogami.

Did Pax not move after receiving a request?

No, but the turning over a new leaf part was suspicious...


But, if it's the story just now, the one who's suspicious is actually the King of the KDK.

Suddenly snapping like that... It seems like he received Hitogami's advice.

No, there isn't just one disciple.

Both Pax and the King of the KDK could be disciples.

「というわけだ、貴様らを恨む理由など、もう無いだろう」
「なるほど、感服いたしました」

　ザノバはさも感銘を受けたかのように大仰に頭を下げた。
　そして問う。

"And so, I basically have no reason left to hate you two."

"I see. You have done admirably."


Zanoba bowed exaggeratedly as though deeply moved.

Then he asked.

「しかし、最強の手駒が手に入ったのであれば、なにゆえ余を呼び戻したのでしょう？」
「ハッ、その事か」

　パックスは鼻で笑った。
　それにしても、彼もザノバも、一人称が余だから、少し混乱するな。

"However, if you have the strongest pawn, then why did you summon me?"

"Hah, you're asking about that, huh?"


Pax snorted.

But man, both he and Zanoba use '余' to refer to themselves, so I'm getting a little confused.

「確かに、ランドルフに任せれば、北からの侵略などどうにでもなるだろう。
　だが、先ほどは手駒と言ったが、ランドルフは所詮、借り物だ。
　いつかは王竜の陛下に返さねばならん。
　借り物の力を己の力と勘違いして自国を守っていたのでは、せっかく認めてくださった陛下も、がっかりするやもしれん」

　力を認められて、シーローン王国の国王にしてもらった。
　だから力を示しつづけなければならない。

"Certainly if I leave it to Randolph, I could take care of something like the invasion from the north. But, though I said that he was a pawn, in the end Randolph is something I borrowed. Once day I must return him to His Majesty the Dragon King. If I rely on borrowed power to protect the country, His Majesty who was the one to finally acknowledge me might also be disappointed."


Acknowledging Pax's power, he made Pax the king of the Kingdom of Shirone.

That's why he had to display his power.

「余のような者は、常に自分の有用性を見せていかねばならん。そうだろう？」

　言いたいことはわかる。
　俺もオルステッドには常に有用である部分を見せていきたい。

"Someone in my position just always show their usefulness. Isn't that so?"


I know what he wants to say.

I as well always want to show Orsted my usefulness.

「さて、そういうわけだ、兄上よ……いやザノバよ。
　お前は余が復讐のために呼び出したと思っているかもしれんが……そのつもりはない。
　書状の通りだ。
　クーデターのせいで国の戦力は低下し、そこをついて北は攻めてくる。
　今は、ザノバのような武人が必要な時だ。
　過去の事を水に流し、力を貸してくれ」

　パックスはそう言い、顎を引くように頭を下げた。
　下げたといえないかもしれないが、下がってはいる。
　兄ではなくザノバと呼ぶのは、王としてのけじめみたいなものだから、いいだろう。

"And that's how it is. Ani-ue... No, Zanoba. You may have thought I summoned you here for revenge, but... I have no intention of that. It is as the letter says. Because of the coup d'état, the war potential of the country has fallen, and using that, the north attacked. Now is a time that calls for a warrior like you, Zanoba. Let us forget the past, and lend me your power."


Saying that, Pax lowered his head.

Though you might be able to say that he wasn't lowering himself, he did bow.

Not referring to Zanoba as a brother, but as a king, this conduct was probably okay.

「無論です陛下。余は、そのために生かされていたのですから」

　ザノバは頷く。
　そこに迷いは無い。
　迷いのなさゆえに、パックスは怪しさを感じたのだろう。
　続けて問うた。

"Of course, Your Majesty. I was allowed to live for this reason."


Zanoba nodded.

He didn't waver.

Because of that lack of hesitation, Pax probably felt suspicious.

He continued, and asked,


"But Ani-ue... I'm aware that I'm a usurper. Don't you have anything you wish to say about that?"
「しかし兄上……余は簒奪者であることを自覚している。それに関して、何か言いたいことがあるのではないか？」

　パックスは、ザノバに叛意が無いか。
　という点は確かめておきたいのだろう。
　兄貴を全滅させたのだ。
　自分が恨みを持っていないとはいえ、ザノバに恨まれていないとは限らない。
　ザノバが仇討ちのために戻ってきていたとしても、なんらおかしくない。

Pax probably wanted to confirm whether or not Zanoba had any feelings of rebellion.

His older brothers were completely killed.

Though Pax held no resentment towards Zanoba, that didn't meant that Zanoba held no resentment towards him.

Even if Zanoba had returned for vengeance, there would be nothing strange about it.

「……」

　ザノバはその言葉で顔を上げ、一瞬迷い、すぐにまた頭を下げた。
　言い倦ねるザノバに、パックスは顎を上げ、見下ろすように言った。

"..."


At those words, Zanoba raised his head, and wavered for just a second, but immediately bowed again.

Getting nowhere, Pax raised his chin and spoke, looking down.

「遠慮なく申してみよ」

　きっと、彼がどう答えるかで、俺が死神と戦うかどうかが決まるのだろう。
　死神はやる気のなさそうな顔で突っ立っているが、いざとなればすさまじいスピードで動くに違いない。
　目眩ましと足止めを同時に行い、壁を破壊して逃げよう。
　警戒していた所で、ザノバが口を開いた。

"Why don't you speak without holding back?"


I'm sure that depending on how he answers, I may or may not fight with the Death God.

Though the Death God looked like he had no enthusiasm, there's no mistaking that when it comes down to it, he'll move with terrible speed.

Whilst putting up a smoke screen, I'll destroy the wall and escape.

While I was being vigilant, Zanoba spoke.

「誰が王で、どんな政（まつりごと）をしようと、余がシーローンという国を守るために生きているという事に変わりはありませぬ」

　謁見の場に、沈黙が流れた。
　質問の答えではない。
　だが、言葉の内容が「叛意はない、貴方に従う」という意味であることはわかった。

　パックスは難しい顔をしていた。
　判断に困っているのだろうか。
　ザノバが敵か味方か。

"Whoever the king, whatever the government, the fact that I live to protect the country called Shirone will not change."


A silence spread through the audience hall.

He didn't answer the question.

But, everyone understood that the meaning of his reply was "I have no intention of rebelling. I will do as you say."


Pax made a difficult expression.

I wonder if he was troubled on his judgement.

Whether Zanoba was an enemy, or an ally.

「ふん、まあ、どちらでもいいか」

　だが、最終的に諦めたようにつぶやいた。
　そして、意を決したように大声で言い放つ。

"Hmph, well whatever. It's fine either way I guess."


But, in the end he muttered as though giving up.

He then declared in a loud voice, as though resolving himself.

「ザノバ・シーローン。貴様にカロン砦の守護を命じる。
　すでに兵は配置してある。指揮官として出向き、北からの軍勢を抑えよ」
「ハッ！」

　ザノバは畏まり、改めて頭を垂れた。
　こうして、謁見は終了となった。

　肩透かしをくらった気分で、俺は謁見の間を退出した。

"Zanoba Shirone. I command you to protect Karon Fortress. Soldiers have already been arranged. You will act as the commander, and stop the army from the north."

"Sir!"


Zanoba obeyed, and bowed once more.

Like this, the audience was concluded.


Feeling like I dodged a bullet, I left the audience hall.

　その後、俺達はシーローンの王宮の一室を与えられた。
　すでにザノバの私室はなくなっているらしく、二階の客室であった。

　護衛と称して、王竜王国の騎士らしき者も一人、部屋の外に立っている。
　恐らく、監視だろう。
　パックスはザノバを警戒しているのだ。

　翌日には北のカロン砦へと出立する事になる。
　ロキシーにもひと通りの事は話しておきたいが、監視の目もある。
　あまり怪しい動きはせず、明日には合流して一緒に北の砦に向かうのがいいだろう。

　俺はザノバと一緒に部屋に入り、一息ついた。
　ザノバは王族だというのに、俺と一緒の部屋だ。
　別々の部屋にして別々に動かれても厄介という判断だろうか。

　俺とザノバは向かい合うようにソファに座った。



「パックスめ、意外に立派に王をしておりましたな」

　先に口を開いたのはザノバだった。
　口調はいつも通りで、むしろ嬉しそうにも見える。

「そうか？」
「国を己の手で、シーローン王国の者で守るため、
　かつて恨みを持っていた相手に頭まで下げたのです。
　これを立派と言わずして何と言うのですか」

　まあ、そう言えば立派だな。
　頭を下げるっても、首をちょっと動かしただけだけど。

「師匠は随分と心配されていたようですが、人は変わり、そして間違えるものです」
「そうだな」
「パックスも、確かにやり方は乱暴で、間違ってはいるでしょうが、精一杯やっていると余は感じました」

　確かに俺の記憶にあるパックスよりは、マシになっているだろうか。
　精一杯やっている、と言えなくもない。
　だが、本当にそれだけなら、俺もこう悩んだりはしない。

「でも、もしかすると、裏に悪い神様がいて、操っているのかもしれないぞ」
「ふむ、師匠が戦っているという悪神ですか？」

　冗談まじりに言ってみると、手応えのある反応が返ってきた。

「あれ？　話したっけ？」
「以前、クリフ殿と食事を取った時に」

　ああ、クリフと腹を割って話そうと言った時か。
　でも、あの時のザノバは信じてくれていなかったような。

「あの時は、師匠が嘘をついているのだと思ったのですがな」
「……」
「しかし、クリフ殿の魔道具でオルステッドの呪いが緩和されるのを見れば、さしもの余とて師匠とオルステッド、そしてその悪神の関係もわかります」

　そうか。
　わかるのか。
　なら、話しておいた方がいいか。
　ザノバもここまで来た以上、関係者だろうしな。

「じゃあ話そう」
「はい、師匠」

　俺はザノバに、ヒトガミの事を話した。
　今までの事をざっと。
　そして、今回の事もざっと。
　パックスがヒトガミに操られている可能性を。

「ふむ……しかし、パックスはヒトガミという単語を、一言も発してはおりませんでしたな。無関係なのでは？」
「俺を騙した神だ。裏でわからないように動いていても不思議じゃない」

　使徒がパックスじゃないにしても、死神とか、ベネディクトという可能性もある。
　今のところ俺が怪しいと思っているのは王竜王国の王だ。
　けど、使徒は一人ではない。
　ヒトガミの動きの傾向を鑑みるに、シーローン王国側にも一人ぐらい配置してそうだ。

「騙されて……確か師匠は、ヒトガミに騙されてオルステッドと戦うハメになったのでしたな」
「そうだ」
「ならば、パックスもヒトガミに騙されて、師匠と戦うハメになっている可能性がある、と」

　ザノバは顎に手をあて、何かを考えるポーズを取った。
　そして、ぽつりとつぶやいた。

「ならば、余がパックスを守ってやらねばなりませぬな」

　え？

「……それ、いざって時には、俺の敵に回るって事か？」
「は？　いやいや、まさか。余が師匠の敵に回るはずがないでしょう。大体、師匠はパックスを殺してはならないと言われているのでしょう？」
「でも、今……」
「守るというのは「ヒトガミから」という意味です」

　だよな。
　びっくりした。
　いざ戦いになった時、ザノバが向こうの陣営に回るかと思った。
　そうなったら、お手上げだ。
　ほっとした。

　しかし、唐突に「守る」なんて言葉が出てくるとは。

「お前はパックスの事なんて、どうでもいいと考えてると思ってたよ」

　思わずそう言うと、ザノバはきょとんとした顔をした。
　もう一度顎に手を当て、また考えるようなポーズを取る。

「確かに、今まではそうでしたな。関わりもありませんし」

　難しげな顔をして、むむむと唸る。

「……案外、パックスにあのように頼られたのが、初めてだったからやもしれませぬな！」

　ザノバはそう言って、快活に笑った。
　頼られたというより利用されているという感じだし、
　ザノバ自身、頼られたら奮起するキャラでもないだろうに……。
　まあ、恐らく『国を守る』という意志と、王であるパックスを守るという行動が、よく似てるだからだろう。


　しかし、どうにもヒトガミの思惑が読めない。
　誰が使徒かもわからない。
　俺を殺すための罠とやらの気配もない。
　何かを見落とし、何かに気づいていない感じがする。
　罠というのがオルステッドの杞憂で済めば、それに越したことはないんだが、楽観はやめておいた方がいいだろう。
　どこかに罠がある、そして俺はそれに気づいていない。
　まあ、不安が残るが、ひとまずそれに関しては、わからないものはわからないのだからしょうがない。

　また、ザノバの説得も難しそうだ。
　今のところ、パックスはザノバを受け入れるような姿勢をとっている。
　殺そうとはしていない。
　ザノバも求められれば国防の要としてそのまま国に残りそうな感じだ。

　パックスがザノバを殺そうとしないなら、連れ帰る理由も薄い。
　殺される心配が無いなら、混乱中の国許で就職したってだけだもんな。
　社長がパックスってあたりにブラック企業の気配を感じるが、ザノバの選んだ道なら尊重したほうがいい。

　でもパックスが心変わりして、ザノバを殺そうとする可能性はまだ残っている。
　現時点でそれを示唆するのは、ただの言いがかりになるが、残っているのは残っている。
　そして、実際にパックスがザノバを狙いだしてからでは遅い。
　その前に、どこかで、パックスがザノバを殺そうとしている証拠のようなものを見つけたい。

　しかしその証拠は、どこを探せばいいのだろうか。
　そもそも、今は殺すつもりはなくとも、あとで邪魔になって殺そうって思うかも知れない。
　つまり、現時点で証拠はなくて……。

　あ～、くそ。
　こんがらがってきた。
　ストレスでハゲそうだ……。

　俺一人で悩んでも答えは出そうにない。
　明日、ロキシーに相談してみよう。
