- After an anonymous phone call, the police go to a house to arrest a suspected murderer. They don't know what he looks like but they know his name is John and that he is inside the house. The police bust in on a carpenter, a truck driver, a mechanic and a fireman all playing poker. Without hesitation or communication of any kind, they immediately arrest the fireman. How do they know they've got their man?
- Ask yes/no questions to find the answer.
- ---
- Do you know anyone who wanted to do one of these jobs when they were young?
- When you were a child, what did you want to do for a job?
- p. 45 - Did you use to want to do any of the jobs in part 2?
- With your partner, talk about which descriptions in part 3 describe each job in part 2.
- job security = confidence that you will not lose your job
- job safety = opposite of danger; you’re confident that you won’t be injured in your job
- ---
- Grammar: decisions about the future
- How many different (grammatical) ways can we talk about decisions and plans for the future in English?
- present continuous: I’m flying to Spain next week.
- be going to + base form: I’m going to buy jeans and a book later.
- will + base form: I’ll buy new jeans after work.
- simple present: We don’t have class on December 24.
- will = decisions made at the time of speaking
- You just tore a hole in your jeans. You decide that you’ll buy new ones after work.
- be going to = decisions made before the time of speaking
- You already decided you need new jeans, and you tell your friend you’re going to buy them later.
- present continuous = decisions with arrangements made before the time of speaking
- You say that you’re flying to Spain next week.
- simple present = things that are arranged and scheduled before the time of speaking
- You say that your flight leaves at 6pm.
- ---
- Grammar for predictions (when you can’t choose or plan ahead of time):
- Tomorrow will be sunny.
- Tomorrow is going to be sunny. (This is more certain, especially if I see evidence right now that makes me sure about the event.)
- Degrees of certainty:
- It will definitely rain tomorrow. = I’m (nearly) 100% sure it will rain.
- It will probably rain tomorrow. = I’m more than 50% sure it will rain.
- It might/may rain tomorrow. = I’m more than 0% sure it will rain. = I think rain is a possibility.
- ---
- p. 47 part 8 - Cross out the option that is NOT logical for each sentence.
- 1 won’t
- 2 may not
- 3 might, will
- 4 might not
- 5 will (If we haven’t seen the plans, we don’t know one way or the other.)
- 6 may not
- ---
- The choice between “may” and “may not” depends on which option is unexpected.
- “He may die.” = I’m telling you the thing he is doing is so dangerous that death is a possibility.
- “He may not die.” = You were pretty sure he would die, but I’m telling you there’s a chance he’ll survive.
- ---
- Vocabulary: “job” and “work”
- job = count noun for an occupation or a task

- work = verb for putting effort or labor into something (“I work until 5.”)
- work = verb for function (“The computer doesn’t work.”)
- ---
- part 11 - Complete each sentence with the correct form of “job” or “work”.
- 1 work
- 2 job
- 3 work
- 4 work
- 5 work
- 6 work
- 7 jobs

- ---
- part 13 - Tell your partners about predictions about the next ten years that you have for your country in any of these areas or something else. Use the correct words for how sure you are of your predictions.
- ---
- p. 48 - What are these women doing now?

- ---
- part 5: p. 175 - In the audioscript for Devi, find
- 1 one thing that she has already decided to do - “I’m not going to stay in this job forever.”
- 2 one thing she has arranged to do - “I’m taking the entrance exam next month.”
- 3 one thing she decides while speaking - “I suppose I’ll tell him soon.”
- (Remember the grammar we talked about for future plans.)
- ---
- p. 49 part 8 - Choose the correct option for each sentence. (Do this individually, then check with your partner.)
- 1 I’m taking (If an action doesn’t require preparation, then we can use present continuous if it was a decision we already made.)
- 2 I’m starting (already arranged)
- 3 I’m going to take (already decided)
- 4 I’m going to manage (this is more of a prediction than a plan)
- 5 they are going to do (Without specific words that tell us it’s about the future, present continuous usually means something is in the present.)
- 6 I’m going to be (this is a prediction, also “be” isn’t an action, so we can’t use it in present continuous)
- 7 I’ll have (this is a prediction)
- ---
- skiing, being, seeing, fleeing, guaranteeing - these all have the same sound at the end, which is two syllables

- Have you had a job interview in your life?
- What are some typical interview questions?
- - What did you study?
- - What are your skills?
- - What experience do you have?
- - Tell me one of the most important goals in your life?
- - What salary do you expect?
- - What languages do you speak?
- Why would a company ask a brainteaser question like, “How would you weigh a plane without scales?”
- ---
- With your partner, decide what (kind of) company you work for, and what kind of employee you need.
- Then choose 5 interview questions (from the list or your own ideas) that you can ask people who apply for the job.
- Switch partners and conduct 5-minute job interviews with your new partner. (Do this three more times.)
- Now return to your original partner and compare notes on the people you interviewed. Choose someone to offer the job to, and have in mind a second choice in case that person chooses a different job.
- Tell the class who you chose and why.
- ---
- p. 53 - What is a cover letter?
- - It’s a letter that you usually send with your resume to explain who you are and why you want the job.

- standard opening and closing phrases: Dear Sir or Madam, Yours sincerely
- (We can also start with “To Whom It May Concern” if we don’t know who will read it.)
- ---
- Homework: 3-4 test
- (I won’t be here next week, but on December 17, we will have food to finish the class.)
