Zootr Frosty and Frigid Challenge Rules

  1. Welcome to the Frosty and Frigid Challenges!
  2.  
  3. This challenge was inspired by the ZOOTR 5-hit challenge created by Iateyourpie.
  4.  
  5. The Frosty Challenge is a new Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Randomizer challenge that I created in order to challenge myself and encourage other ZOOTR players to challenge themselves as well.
  6.  
  7. If you would like to try the challenge out for yourself, you can import the settings into the 8.1 stable version of ZOOTR. Otherwise you can ask me to roll a seed or multiple seeds for you by joining my discord server! https://discord.com/invite/9BPtNkrdbb

  9. *NEW!* You can now play these challenges using the PC Port, Ship of Harkinian! To play this challenge with the PC Port, keep everything the same except change the main damage multiplier from x4 damage to x8 damage. This is because ice traps don't do as much damage to Link as they do in normal ZOOTR. Keep the multiplier at x4 for fall damage and void outs.

  11. Also note that in SoH, you are able to toggle Link's climbing speed and block pushing speed. Setting the block pushing speed to max is fine, but for your run to count you cannot change Link's climbing speed, as it will give you an unfair advantage over those playing the Frosty or Frigid Challenge on normal ZOOTR.

  13. Enabling time savers in SoH that have no effect on the Permadeath aspect of the challenge is also okay. Some examples of this are easier fishing or making minigames easier.

  15. Playing this challenge on original ZOOTR and PC Port (SoH) will be a different experience. In ZOOTR, you will have a much harder early game and easier endgame. The opposite is true for SoH. If you struggle with early game ice traps, try SoH. If you struggle with fighting enemies and bosses, try original ZOOTR.

  17. There are many other advantages and disadvantages to playing the challenge on original ZOOTR versus SoH. I have no idea which version will be easier or harder overall, so play which ever you have the most fun with!

  65. 1) If Link dies, I have to start over with a new randomized seed. In order to beat the Frosty Challenge, I need to obtain all 6 medallions and defeat Ganon.

  67. 2) The only health and magic regeneration I can use from bottles is what the randomizer gives me (e.g. if the randomizer gives me a red potion, green potion, Lon Lon milk, or fairy I can use it at any time). No refills.
  68.  
  69. 3) No collecting fairies or freestanding recovery hearts (freestanding pieces of heart are okay to pick up). If I accidentally touch a fairy or freestanding recovery heart and gain health from it, I have to take the same amount or more damage than the amount of health I gained as a penalty. I must do this before getting another check. Grabbing fairies or freestanding recovery hearts while at full health is okay. As long as you aren't gaining health, there is no penalty. Another exception to the fairy rule is if the game gives me a randomized fairy in a bottle.

  71. 4) I can only summon each of the six Great Fairies one time.

  73. 5) Nayru's Love is banned.
  74.  
  75. 6) Hero mode setting is on. This means that no hearts will drop from enemies, pots, shrubs, etc.

  77. 7) Quadruple damage setting is on. Link will take quadruple damage from enemies, bombs, and other hazards. If you are playing the PC Port, Ship of Harkinian, you must have the damage multiplier set to x8 instead. You can still have the void out and fall damage multipliers set to quadruple.

  79. 8) Ice trap mayhem setting is on. This setting turns more checks into ice traps. This is in addition to the 6 ice traps in the normal item pool.

  81. 9) Item pool setting is set to scarce. An extra copy of major item upgrades that are not required to open location checks is removed (e.g. Bow upgrade, Magic upgrade). Heart Containers are removed as well. Number of Bombchu items is reduced from 6 to 3.

  83. 10) I have to complete all 6 of Ganon's trials as well as the tower escape sequence. I am requiring them to beat the challenge because of their higher difficulty with the quad damage multiplier. Same goes for saving all 4 carpenters. If there is danger involved, I cannot skip it or make it easier in the settings.

  85. 11) No save and quit if you are below 3 hearts. Saving and quitting will reset Link to 3 hearts, which can easily be abused to gain health in this challenge. If you save and quit accidentally and gain hearts, you must take the same amount of damage than the amount of hearts you gained. THIS NOW INCLUDES THE DAMPE RACE AS WELL! If you are unable to take the same amount of damage as you had earlier due to quad damage, round up to the nearest whole heart. (i.e. You are at 1.5 hearts at the end of Dampe race and are forced to save/quit, starting you off at 3 hearts. You must take one heart of damage, so either get hit by the boulder in Kokiri Forest or if you are playing the Frigid challenge, simply bonk into a wall. Note that if you are playing the PC Port, you will have the ability to warp out of Dampe Race. Link will start with the Prelude of Light and Serenade of Water already learnt to help make up for the lack of save and quit warping.

  87. 12) Save states are allowed if I need to continue a challenge at a later time. If I'm under 3 hearts and need to stop playing, I must use a save state.

  89. 13) No warping while under attack by enemies or while falling. If the danger music is playing, I cannot warp or save/quit until it stops.

  91. 14) No save/quit if there is a timer active (e.g. underwater or by lava). Warping out using the ocarina is allowed.
  92.  
  93. 15) No save/quit while in water in order to dodge an ice trap.
  94.  
  95. 16) No save scumming keys! You must commit!
  96.  
  97. 17) No major glitches are allowed. Ground jumps are okay.
  98.  
  99. Note: The 2nd prize of bombchu bowling will heal you to full, no matter what it is. Take advantage of this, as it's in logic once you get bombs or bombchus.

  102. Required settings. These settings are required in order for the challenge to be considered beaten.

  104. 1) Closed Deku and shuffle Kokiri Sword. Beating the Deku Tree first makes the challenge easier, especially in the early game.
  105. 2) Zora's fountain closed.
  106. 3) Gerudo's fortress set to default behavior (must save 4 carpenters).
  107. 4) Rainbow bridge always open and Ganon's Trial Count set to 6.
  108. 5) Starting Age set to random.
  109. 6) Shuffle songs set to anywhere.
  110. 7) Shuffle Weird Egg. (No skipping child Zelda)
  111. 8) Shuffle Gerudo Card.
  112. 9) Shuffle Magic Beans.
  113. 10) Start with all Maps & Compasses.
  114. 11) Ganon's Boss Key enabled and set to 6 medallions.
  115. 12) Bombchus are considered in logic. Bombchu drops are turned on.
  116. 13) Starting inventory has Prelude of Light and Serenade of Water (this is to make up for the no save/quit while under 3 hearts, plus adds 2 ice traps).
  117. 14) Skip Tower Escape Sequence is turned off.
  118. 15) Item Pool set to scarce.
  119. 16) Ice Trap Mayhem is turned on.
  120. 17) Ice traps can appear as anything.
  121. 18) Chest size matches contents is off.
  122. 19) Hint distribution is set to strong.

  126. 23) Blue Fire Arrows is turned on (ice arrows gain the power of blue fire. They can be used to melt red ice and break the mud walls in Dodongo's Cavern).

  157. Puresage29's Strategies for both Frosty and Frigid Challenges
  158. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  159.  
  160. 1) Try and do as many fool checks as you can while at full or good health and save your chest checks for when your health gets lower. Note that this only applies to Normal ZOOTR. If you are playing SoH please ignore this tip.
  161.  
  162. 2) Try to save your great fairy checks. There are 6 great fairies in the game. Try to save these checks for as long as you can since they heal you to full before giving you a randomized item.
  163.  
  164. 3) Get as many hint stones as you can as early as you can. Not only can you use these to dodge ice traps, but sometimes they will tell you where pieces of heart are. For example, if a hint tells you that 30 skulls has a piece of heart, you can save this check for a free heal whenever you need it!
  165.  
  166. 4) Take it slow! Try to learn the dangers of each room in dungeons and be sure you are well equipped for them!
  167.  
  168. 5) Learn how much damage each enemy deals. This will take time and perhaps some research, but you will want to know which enemies can one-shot you before fighting them.

  170. 6) Can't find the biggoron's sword? In vanilla Frosty challenge, Frigid challenge, Frosty Skulls, and Frigid skulls, the biggoron's knife is not shuffled. If you are able to find the wallet upgrade, you can use the biggoron's knife against bosses that are more dangerous. Just watch out for it breaking!

  237. 4) Sun's song is set to be in your Starting inventory (this is for convenience purposes to help with shop times, but will also add another ice trap due to Ice Trap Mayhem).
  238. 5) Shuffle Expensive Merchants is turned on. Medigoron, the Carpet Salesman, and Granny will now sell you a randomized item at the same price of their vanilla item.
  239. 6) Scrubsanity is turned on. This shuffles all of the Business Scrubs into the item pool. They will each sell you a randomized item.
  240. 7) Scrub sales are set to random prices (0-99 rupees). This will largely affect your routing!
  241. 8) Make sure that Deku Scrubs and other merchants do not tell you what they are selling.

  314. 3) You will start with Farore's Wind. (Unless you are playing in SoH).
  315. 4) Scarce item pool is changed to minimal item pool. This means no heart pieces will be in the game (except from the "Winner!" piece of heart).
  316. 5) Shuffle freestanding recovery hearts and rupees is turned on. Since hearts are now considered a randomized item, you are allowed to collect them.
  317. 6) Instead of ice traps appearing as anything, they will only appear as major items.
  318. 7) You cannot collect a recovery heart that is a respawn. (e.g. you grab the 4 items in Saria's house and come back in to see 4 recovery hearts that respawned. You cannot collect those).
  319. 8) The 8 rupee locations in Dampe's Grave will always be junk items. You can still collect these items, but it might not be worth it as voiding out in Dampe's grave will result in a 4 heart loss with the Quadruple damage multiplier.

  349. Main Rules

  351. 1) All rules and settings from the Frosty Challenge apply. Be sure to read the Frosty Challenge rules first.
  352. 2) Ice trap onslaught is turned on in place of ice trap mayhem. This will turn every added junk item as well as all junk items in the vanilla game into an ice trap.
  353. 3) Bonks do damage is on. Link will take a whole heart of damage if he bonks.
  354. 4) You cannot buy a non-randomized shield. The only exception to this rule is if you happen to get the Kokiri Sword before the Deku Shield, and you have gotten every other check IN LOGIC. If you do this, you must burn your shield immediately after Deku Tree. If your shield burns or gets eaten and you can't get past Mido after that, you must roll a new seed.
  355. 5) Songs are at the end of dungeons.
  356. 6) Ganon's castle is not open from the beginning like it is in the Frosty Challenge. You must find all 3 spiritual stones to open up the bridge. You still need all 6 medallions to claim Ganon's Boss key.

  382. 1) Try and do as many fool checks as you can while at full or good health and save your chest checks for when your health gets lower. Note that this only applies to Normal ZOOTR. If you are playing SoH please ignore this rule.

  384. 2) Try to save your great fairy checks. There are 6 great fairies in the game. Try to save these checks for as long as you can since they heal you to full before giving you a randomized item.

  386. 3) Get as many hint stones as you can as early as you can. Not only can you use these to dodge ice traps, but sometimes they will tell you where pieces of heart are. For example, if a hint tells you that 30 skulls has a piece of heart, you can save this check for a free heal whenever you need it!

  388. 4) Take it slow! Try to learn the dangers of each room in dungeons and be sure you are well equipped for them!

  390. 5) Learn how much damage each enemy deals. This will take time and perhaps some research, but you will want to know which enemies can one-shot you before fighting them.

  392. 6) Can't find the biggoron's sword? In vanilla Frosty challenge, Frigid challenge, Frosty Skulls, and Frigid skulls, the biggoron's knife is not shuffled. If you are able to find the wallet upgrade, you can use the biggoron's knife against bosses that are more dangerous. Just watch out for it breaking!
