<blockquote><p>Childhood</p></blockquote>
<p>Rin&rsquo;s father died when he was very young; his father was a swimmer who had dreamed of going to the Olympics but had to give-up his goal and become a fisherman.</p>
<p>Due to a tragic incident (a storm), his father drowned three kilometers off the coast along with the rest of his crew. Rin stated that he has very few memories of his father and cannot even recall what his father looked like, as his father would be gone for days while out fishing. As such, he decided to try and become an Olympic swimmer because he believes that by following this path, he will be able to see his father&rsquo;s face.</p>
<p>In order to remain close to his father, Rin puts his swimming goggles on in the same way his father did (by pulling the strap back and letting it snap back onto the back of his swim cap).</p>
<p>Rin joined the Iwatobi Swimming Club prior to leaving for Australia because that was his father&rsquo;s old club, where his father and his teammates had won the relay. He wanted to make a team and win the relay to emulate his father as he started down the path of becoming an Olympic swimmer.</p>

<blockquote><p>Elementary School: Australia</p></blockquote>
<p>For the first few weeks, Rin had a difficult time getting used to being in a new school. The worst part of it was the transition between English and Japanese because once he managed that, he had to start working on getting used to the difference in school systems. It was a little bit of culture shock for him and it was hard on a young boy his age. At the same time, he had to get used to being around Russel and Lori, two complete strangers that he had to stay with in order to attend school. There wasn't a lot that he could think about them but Rin didn't worry too much about it.</p>
<p>The swim team didn't have try outs for a while but Rin waited patiently, ending up getting bullied because of his claims of how good of a swimmer he was. The redhead was diligent in trying to prove that he was worthy. The bullying was getting worse as time went on, making it hard for Rin to completely deal with it but he was persistent. Once spring came around, Rin tried out for the team and did rather well, ending up 3rd in butterfly and gaining his place in the swim team. He was 2nd, tied with another person, in freestyle. It was because of this that the bullying began to lessen for Rin, a few people starting to warm up to him even just a little bit.</p>
<p>While in Elementary School, Rin had to practice his English in order to communicate better with people that he went to classes with. This was a huge task for him and Rin did everything that he could to make certain that he could pick up on the language but it wasn't coming easy for him. In fact, it was the hardest thing he'd ever done in his life. Rin didn't think he could do it and, as such, he confided in Russel and Lori's dog, Winnie, because he felt that it was safer to talk to the dog than the people he was living with.</p>
<p>It took several weeks for him to start picking up on the more subtle pieces of the English language and, soon enough, he was talking about Haru to keep himself occupied. In order to work with the language, Rin managed to describe different parts of Haru so that he could use different types of words. It was just easier for him to do it by using his friend as an example.</p>
<p>Of course, Russel and Lori caught on to how often he was talking about Haru and started asking him different simple questions for him to answer in English. This was another way that he was able to learn how to describe things, personalities, and even different abilities and places. Lori did wonder about Rin's crush on Haru but she never mentioned it, feeling it would be better for Rin not to tell him. She felt that Rin would need to figure it out on his own rather than have someone tell him something he never thought about.</p>
<p>Since Rin was still learning how to describe places, he ended up forgetting how to describe his home and the name of the street that Russel and Lori lived on. It was because of this that Rin managed to get lost on public transit for almost four hours one evening. He had missed his stop on the busline and was taken back to the terminal where the authorities were called, making it easier for Rin to be found by them. Russel and Lori immediately understood that they needed to work more with Rin on his vocabulary.</p>
<p>Once Rin was settled into the school, a little girl that looked just like Haru became slightly attached to Rin in their last year at the school. They became good friends, doing almost everything together, but the resemblance wasn't lost on Rin. He was all the time having fun with her and found that he enjoyed being around her enough that he accepted her request to go to the summer formal with her.</p>
<p>By the time school let out, Rin found that he was incredibly bored with being in the house all the time after about a week. He didn't stay there for long and managed to try playing guitar and skateboarding. Since he lived near the park, it was easy for him to find different things to do and a small group of skateboaders taught him a few basic tricks. The guitar was a little harder but Rin did well with it, learning a few things by the time September rolled around.</p>

<blockquote><p>Junior High/Middle School</p></blockquote>
<p>When he was fourteen, Rin was away from the house often. He was all the time doing something even if it were swimming, playing guitar, or messing around on the skateboard. For a while, Lori thought that drugs might have been involved and started asking him about it but by the time she attempted to get her questions out, Rin had managed to get himself into a bad group. Initially, he denied her allegations and ended up trying pot afterward. He figured if she were going to blame him for being on it, then he might as well do it.</p>
<p>It wasn't too long after that when Rin ended up leaving a small stache in his room, having hidden it in his underwear drawer. Russel managed to find it and Rin was grounded for a few weeks, the pot being thrown out. He didn't contest his punishment and allowed himself to take his grounding like a man and spent most of it using his guitar to brush up on his skills with singing and playing.</p>
<p>It was around this time, during his drug use and grounding, that Rin's letters to Sousuke started to dry up and stop completely. He didn't do it intentionally but Rin had to keep himself focused on his own 'here and now' especially after he had detracted himself from his original goal of the Olympics.</p>
<blockquote><p>Middle School - Australia</p></blockquote>
<p>By the time he was fifteen, Rin was quite a bit more popular. It was mostly because of the way he swam and because his times had gotten so much better over the time that he'd been training. He won several awards because of his times and even a few over the way that he same, some calling it 'beautiful' or even 'strong' but he wanted to be just as good as Haru. No one called it talent, they mostly referred to it as 'hard work.'</p>
<p>When he had time to himself in school, Rin would end up serenading the ladies with his guitar skills. It was a bit comical but several of the young women liked it quite a bit, some even attempting to get him to play more whenever he had the time.</p>
<p>After a while, the girl that looked like Haru was dumped. Rin couldn't stand looking at her and seeing Haru in her place and, because of this, he ended up worsening in his times. The wall was hit harder than he had expected and the following depression hit him harder than he had believed it would.</p>
<p>Because of that, Rin ended up experimenting in drugs, mostly pot and pills. He tried anything and everything under the sun, trying to find whatever would make him forget his times and make it easier for him to finally start doing better. He never found it and then, after a bit, alcohol ended up getting mixed in.</p>

<blockquote><p>High School - Australia</p></blockquote>
<p>The summer before his first year was a hard one. The redhead ended up losing at Regionals before the end of the year and he attended a party afterward. He knew a lot of the people that were there, they were friends, a few of them not, but Rin put up with it. He didn't much care and simply played whatever guitar was put in his lap.</p>
<p>Not long after being there, Rin took a drink and found that he'd been roofied. He blacked out and was taken advantage of by a girl in his class, having never consented to the act. There were videos taken of the act and Rin was shown after the fact a few weeks, especially when the girl started talking.</p>
<p>Because of her, his drug use got worse until he ended up having his stomach pumped a few weeks later. Russel and Lori put a hefty punishment on him and became much more strict than they were before, not wanting Rin to get into another situation like that. As subtly as they could, Russel and Lori suggested that Rin might want to take the chance and head on out to Japan again.</p>
<p>Around the same time, Rin was starting to gain an awful reputation at school. He was known as an unpopular druggie, he lost several good friends, and there were naturally very nasty rumors going on about him. The last bit of the rumors were centered around the girl who had roofied and taken advantage of him, going around claiming that he wasn't a good lay and that she thought she might have been pregnant by him.</p>
<p>Rin was becoming more stressed by the rumors and he was nearly kicked off of the swim team when his swimming times ended up getting lower and lower no matter how hard he worked. As such, he started looking at different places in Japan that had notable swimming teams and stumbled across Samezuka Academy.</p>

<blockquote><p>High School - Japan</p></blockquote>
<p>Rin finally ended up approaching Russel and Lori about Samezuka and, at the same time, Russel expressed his concern about Rin's mental health. It seemed that the two had been thinking about talking to him about this for a while and Lori mentioned a therapist, resulting in Rin having a slight breakdown. Eventually, he did calm down and agreed to see one in exchange for being able to transfer to Samezuka.</p>
<p>Before he knew it, the transfer had gone in before his mostly unsuccessful therapy had taken hold of him. To try and help, his mother sent in money to help Rin get his plane ticket and then sent in a hefty amount of money to Russel and Lori to thank them for taking care of her son. The exchange of money was done without Rin's knowledge. </p>
<p>Once he was back in Japan, Rin made sure that his sister didn't know about him being there. He didn't want his mother knowing either but she did. His grades started to pick up now that he was there and Rin started to get hopeful that things would turn around. He put everything from Australia behind him and, at the same time, hesitated on joining the swim club.</p>
<p>Even if that were his primary goal, Rin was reminded of how awful the Australian swim team had been to him and he knew that he needed to return to his roots. This was what led him to the swim club where he met with Haru and the gang in Season 1. After that meeting, Rin felt that he had enough courage and drive once again to return to swimming.</p>
