  1. General Plots & Intrigue Updated 17/06/2023
  2.
  3. Duchies of Cantôn
  4.
  5. >Aubres, the seat of the Royal Court and the center of power in the realm of Cantôn. The golden meadows of grain and barley are a familiar sight. The wealth of this small realm is evident from the towering gothic architecture to the rich cobbled roads in the countryside. [Kingsman: Ignore inferior social standing penalties during Persuade and Courtship rolls]
  6. Aubres Duke same as the Royal Colours = Red and Gold Duchy Color
  7. Duchy Color = Red
  8.
  9. >Romaine, once the greatest of the Canton duchies. Fertile fields and fine vineyards abound in this eastern realm, but many are now overshadowed by the Isle of the Damned and the terrible toll in lives the vigil against it has cost. It is known for its strong presence of Holy Orders and unusually influential womenfolk. [Sacred Duty: +1 Step on the Path of Adam OR the Path of Cain]
  10. Romaine Duchess = White Major, Burgundy Minor
  11. Duchy Color = White
  12.
  13. >The major event that defined Romaine was it's fall from grace during the Night of Three Sisters (when Canton's skies showed a freakish red third moon) and the Deadmen claimed Ardennes.
  14.
  15. >Pascae, the trading power of the realm which spans the entirety of the Cantôn western coastline. You grew up on the coast, with sunny days on sandy beaches or thunderous gales and storms depending on the time of year. You are not so far from home that you do not occasionally smell the saltwater carried upon the breeze. [Merchant Guilds: +2 Starting Wealth (4/10)]
  16. Pascae Duke = Blue Major, Yellow Minor
  17. Duchy Color = Blue
  18.
  19. >Fallavon, the largest and most fecund of Duchies. It is the beating heart of Canton. With its fertile woods, isolated villages and towering tree lines it is known for its industrious woodsmen, rebellious foresters and being the front-line in Man’s struggle against the wilderness. The Law of Adam extends to the treeline and no further. [Fae Kissed: Rolls of 99 will always count as a success]
  20. Fallavon Duke = Green Major, White Minor
  21. Duchy Color = Green
  22.
  23. >”The border to the north is not official, but according to my uncle few hunters will venture beyond the Abhain River. There is no bridge, but it can be forded in a few places this time of year apparently.” (Mademoiselle Ava Sinclair)
  24. >Several possible ford sites are marked, but many are dated and some of the fresher ones have a warning rune drawn nearby that translates simply to ‘River Stone’.(Order of Names Cartography Archives) *The warning rune marks the location of the Chlach Abhain or river troll.
  25. >To the central north there are several ruins and unlawful settlements, some confirmed and destroyed by the order and others only suspected or guessed at; ancient abandoned forts, bandit camps, illegal settlements and one long-lasting Norsikaan trading outpost on the far shores. (Order of Names Cartography Archives)
  26. >The region slightly east and further north of that is entirely unmapped aside from the most obvious features, First Ranger Boris dan Garmet wrote down some twenty years ago that these glades likely mark the very heart of the Fae holdouts.
  27.
  28. >Fallavon terrain is now Familiar. You may not gain further Familiarity without a Ranger Liscence (or extended stays).
  29.
  30. >Montbrun, the most remote of Cantôn realms to the North. Even after several days on the road in the opposite direction, the ever-white peaks of the mountains are as clear as day. They are a stubborn people and even the nobility has a reputation for bluntness bordering on a lack of courtly manners. [Hardy Folk: Reduce Wounded and Injured DC penalties by 5DC (to -5 and 0 respectively)]
  31. Montbrun Duke = Black Major, Grey Minor
  32. Duchy Color = Black
  33.
  34. The use of ‘de’ or ‘von’ implies a recently uplift to nobility, depending on their Duchy origin.
  35.
  36. Events of Interest
  37.
  38. -The Saint Gabriel’s pass, the most reliable pass into the Wastelands from Montbrune, has double it's toll compare from last year for some reason. Lord Alderauge holds the pass, more of him below.
  39.
  40. -The prince provided a group of Cathagi soldiers lead by Kyrios Militades with a Writ of Passage with his own signature not the king. Their mission to capture a Dire wolf to win the favor from the Dragon in Cathagi.
  41. >Distractedly you inspect the writ as if you knew what to look for. You see a royal seal and clear instructions that these men be allowed to pass free of road-tax or assault, and further that their monster-hunting expedition not be interfered with.
  42. >”It’s the King’s seal alright but… well this is the Crown Prince’s signature, not His Majesty’s, I’m sure of it.” (Sir Robert Gilbern)
  43.
  44. >The Dragon reportedly made an off-hand remark that he would enjoy seeing one of the ferocious Canton creatures in his extravagant menagerie. Cathagi merchants and caste leaders alike have been slyly contacting mercenaries for months but Militades has beaten them to the punch with his direct approach.
  45. *A second group of foreigners, a Langlish Freeblade Company claim to be hunting monsters north of Motte-Fallavon. See faction conspiracy for more.
  46.
  47. -In the last two years two nunneries have been attack in Romaine, the Deadmen are suspected, but nothing is known for sure.
  48. >Goodness I hope not, your father says another one was attacked by the southern isles in the night. No survivors, who knows if it was Cathagi or Deadmen? (Letter from Lady Patrycja S. Andrei (Mother))
  49. >You take the ‘another one’ to mean that another nunnery was attacked. This makes 2 in as many years, the last in winter but this one in spring. A pessimist would say that the Deadmen were getting bolder, if it is indeed them.
  50.
  51. -There is a new Prime Serpent in the wasteland gathering strength
  52. >According to reports from the Wastelands already 2 years old, another ‘Prime Serpent’ is quashing rival broods and threatening established settlements. Little wonder that Tracker Jean was reluctant to make the full trek to Freetown. The author’s concern that this new Prime could threaten the Törwatcher Gates is absurd of course, no Törwatcher has ever fallen to an outside force in history of the continent. But it’s not impossible that this Prime Serpent would threaten trade in the area and make some attempt of a siege.(Order of Names Cartography Archives)
  53.
  54.
  55. Rumors and Legends
  56. Black Sails
  57. >There are several rumors of Black Sails sighted to the west and closer each year, the very mention of which appears to terrify seasoned sailors of Langland beyond the usual brand of pirate. The Order of Names has only collected second hand accounts from friends in the Order of the Trident and Given that all interviewees claim no one who sees a Black Sail lives to tell the tale, both you and the author are understandably critical of their veracity.(Order of Names Cartography Archives)
  58.
  59. Blade master Zawahiel
  60. >Some of the older hands, those taking their ease around the khave shop rather than training pupils, recall a man who passed through here some time ago. There is some disagreement as to whether he was a true foreigner or a Langlish mix of something, but All agree that over a score of years ago the man came her, each of the masters old enough to remember him admit to having been bested in the plaza much like Giovanni was today.
  61. >They call him Zawahiel, though whether that is his name or some sort of foreign title even they are not sure. The greying swordmasters do claim that, in addition to besting every Langlish blade set against him, this unassuming swordman of legend travelled to both Norsikaa and Cantôn in search of a worthy opponent without success. Even the latter is true, you cannot say that you have ever heard the name.
  62. >Some say he was a famed senior officer of the Dragon Guard, before retiring to a villa in the outskirts of the city. Others say he arrived in Nova Cathagi wearing nothing but rags and a blade in hand, challenging every swordsman in the city worth the name. Having found them all wanting, he became a hermit living in the desert mountains to the south.>

House Rabe deals only with the human Wasteland settlements for their horseflesh, but not all Montbrun are so discerning. The Pegasus is not the symbol of Duke Montbrun by chance. Binding a Pegasus, let alone selling one into slavery, is an act of sacrilege according to these hardy mountainfolk. 259. >my cousin… he mentioned something about new trade goods in the Pascae ports and that… Hewitt’s family… trade? (Mademoiselle Ava Sinclair)
  260. >”Interesting…” Lady Fallavon leans back and returns to watching the joust, as if to say that information was anything but. Really you can’t see why it would be. Since when is Pascae families being involved in Pascae trade something you’d tell the town crier?
  261. *The cousin of Mademoiselle Ava Sinclair, Sir Jean Sinclair possibly knows more about it.
  262. -Sir Marco Hewitt is the uncle of Lady Maria Hewitt a scholarly woman with an interest in Cathagi imperial artefacts. She lead us ‘Compedium of Cathagi Castes and Origins in History’ a book about their bizarre foreign caste system.
  263.
  264. House Alderauge of Montbrun
  265. >House Alderauge is probably the second-most powerful House in the Montbrun duchy, lesser only to House Montbrun itself. One-on-one House Alderauge can probably muster more troops, but they have far less allies at Court.
  266. >”Would Lord Alderauge be in league with the Vancewells?” From what your friend says, House Alderauge is already setting itself up as a rival to the Duke.
  267. >”Not likely.” Sir Rabe snorts. ”Saint Gabriel’s Gate is home to the largest chapterhouse of Törwatcher knights in the entire duchy. They protect the mountain passes and Pegasi with a religious fervour.”
  268.
  269. House Sinclair of Fallavon
  270. -Its one of the most virulently independent fiefs in the Duchy
  271. >According to her House Sinclair is one of the more prominent Fallavon holdings, with lands dotted out in pockets across the north and west of the region.(Mademoiselle Ava Sinclair)
  272. >They boast a reputation as a house of hardy warriors where every male of noble birth is destined for knighthood. Real knighthood, according to her brothers and cousins, which to them entails being an effective and lethal warrior above all else.
  273. >they scorn the idea of Errantry outside of hunting down monsters on their fringes of their own lands. Their duty is to their family and holdings, first and foremost.
  274. >their territories are one of the hardest to police. The Law of Adam is applied swiftly and brutally at the discretion of the nobles with harsh punishments, even by the standards of the Duchy, being meted out for even fairly minor offences such as illegal forestry or poaching.
  275. >During the War of Borders, when House Sinclair had to abandon their castles and towers to the invading Norsikaans, Langlish and even Pascae opportunists in turn. Scattered to the wild, their forces fought a guerrilla war running independent packs ranging from a dozen to a hundred.
  276. The Duke of Fallavon has a low option of the Sinclair family.
  277. >”Ah well, my father says the Sinclairs are nothing but trouble. He prefers his dogs leashed and under the table, not sniffing for scraps atop it. Still, they’re not all bad. Or bad-looking.” (Marquis Caspian Fallavon)
  278. The feeling seems mutual
  279. >Sir Sinclair snorts derisively over the fallen Marquis and storms off to help the rest of your team.
  280.
  281. House Rabe of Montbrun, heraldry white raven on a black background.
  282. >An old Montbrun house according to your tutors, but their remote position on the Slithering Wastelands border and long disregard for the politics of the distant central Montbrun Court has ensured they’ve remained a minor and fairly impoverished territory.
  283. >rarely participates in the Montbrun courtroom circles. Like most of their ilk, Montbrun are usually content to keep to their own.
  284. >Törwatcher Guardians of the Third Saint’s Pass.
  285. >Norveski wines go North, Rabe ores come South.
  286. -See House Vancewell for their feud with House Rabe.
  287.
  288. House Norwache of Montbrun.
  289. >House Norwache is a vassal of the House that rules northernmost Törwatcher Gate, the smallest and coldest of the great Montbrun fortresses.
  290. >The lands immediately south of his home are owned by House Vancewell.
  291.
  292. Organization of Note
  293.
  294. Ordo Praetor
  295. The order's common identifiers are a black surcoat and gold medallion
  296. >As you sit in the waiting room you observe about a half-dozen men wearing the tell-tale black surcoat and gold medallion of the Ordo Praetor.
  297.
  298. Golden Sun Company, a Langlish Freeblade Company.
  299. -Hire to aid the faction on Fallavon incident.
  300. >The Golden Sun does a lot of business here, and I mean a lot. Private security, bolstering standard bannermen in times of need, even a very lucrative arrangement for the Church and Order of the Trident regarding Langlish shipping lanes.” Sir Bartholomew twirls his Langlish-style mustache, deep in thought. “My cousin Quill is actually on the committee that awards such contracts…(Sir Bartholomew Wavell)
  301.
  302. B{a}stards of Lys, a Langlish Freeblade Company. Their patchwork cloaks are distinctly at odds with the usual billowing Lanlish fashion. Upon each of their right shoulders, sewn in to the cloth, is a depiction of a crowned female Saint shedding a single tear. There are Cantôn men in their ranks.
  303. “All of us. And not just us, word is the Lorne boys and even the Suns are going to get a piece of the pie. And it don’t sound like there ain’t enough pie to go around. Our new employer, or co-employer I guess, has got a lot of coin to go around. I’m talkin’ deep purses, friend. Trust me.” The hardbitten Cantônian mercenary leans in closer, demonstrating his skills in multitasking by scratching his arse with his left hand and letting out a fart at the same time. His right hand gratefully grasps the next tankard you hand him. “Deep. Royal kinda deep.”(Percy of Darbyshire, Sub-Lieutenant)
  304.
  305. Axemen of Lorne, a Langlish Freeblade Company founded by an exiled Norsikaan Jarl. Their sigil is three silver axes and is know to be amongst the oldest. Apparently, every man amongst them from huscarl to halberdier or arbalest must by the rules of the Company be armed at all times with an axe, be it a great two-handed longaxe or a smaller token hatchet. The Axemen of Lorne are mostly comprised of Norsikaans.
  306. They are operating on Northen Montbrun and we pass this information to House Rabe.
  307. >“Not right now at any rate. Pit, maybe not even this year. I got people in the Lornes who say they’ve got business in the Frozen Straits, somewhere up in the north past Fallavon.” north Montbrun? That’s House Norwache territory.
  308.
  309.
  310. The Inferni, black hooded sorcerers from Langland
  311. “Ah, the Inferni. Bodyguards of a sort, yes. But more apt to be called bloodhounds. A Family without their pet sorcerer is hardly worthy of the titles.” Fabio shakes his head, making a sign with his hand, the meaning of which escapes you. A ward against bad luck? “Sorcerers… As you can see, most know well enough to keep their distance from such unnatural creatures.” (Fabio the Elder)
  312.
  313. Rivals and enemies
  314. -Sir Marco Hewitt is a sore loser over our victory in the joust.
  315. -Involved in the slave trade conspiracy involving Golden Sun Company and several faction members.
  316. -In the Duke's Ball he was carrying a coin with a familiar one-winged dragon emblazoned across its surface, the same design as the one in the message with the offer to betray Patrikas Ianthe in the same ball.
  317.
  318. -Someone attempted to sabotage our shield before the melee, we have multiple witness and a description of the suspect, a dishevelled looking man wearing a green hood almost brown from mud and padded leather armour,
  319. >You arrive in time to see a dishevelled looking man wearing a green hood, near brown as it is spattered with mud, barge past your squire and duck under Sir Rabe’s groping swipe and shoving him back down as the man attempts to get up with his leg greave half on.
  320.
  321. >You doubt they’ll catch him, the thug is likely halfway to the woods now if they aren’t already lost in the crowd. Although farmers and other such commonfolk wouldn’t be wearing padded leather armour, the rapscallion is dressed in a manner that makes them indistinguishable from many of the hunters, trappers and woodsmen that Fallavon has a plethora of.
  322.
  323. -It was reveal that the saboteur was Craig of Lowgrove who according to him was hire by a Langlishman or a Pascae merchant dress as one, recognizance by Sir dan Marc, to sabotage our shield and later ambush us in the woods.
  324. >”It wasn’t no local, m’lord. He talked funny, and had clothes of the fancy sort. Coin were odd too, had a stamp on it that I didn’t recognise like a leaf. He uh, he… shaved but left hair on the lip. Never told me his name.” (Craig of Lowgrove)
  325. >”I don’t know, m’lord! He was the one what would find me, I swear it! I was to round up a few rough sorts and follow you into the woods. He’s the one what suggested I speak to the priest! Once you was well out of the way I was, uh… well, we was to…”(Craig of Lowgrove)
  326. >”The man he describes, this ‘agent’. I’d bet my blade it’s a Langlishman, or a Pascae that fancies himself one.” (Sir dan Marc)
  327. >”Not necessarily, sire. Pascae merchants come through here carrying their coinage often enough, it’s an anchor. Or some ship if it’s an older print, I remember because I was conned out once with clipped coins. Langlish folk often find good money as intermediaries in these sorts of low affairs. If good coin is to be had, they’ll not think twice about fronting such skull-duggery.”(Sir dan Marc)
  328.
  329. -The agent has a big mustache.
  330. >the man’s hair appears to have conglomerated from across his body to a single curled lip of hair that is waxed to a sheen.
  331. >”Uh, right m’lord. The man what hired me had liphair like that, but I ent seen him so far.” (Craig of Lowgrove)
  332.
  333. *The agent knew to approach Father Towbray to get near us.
  334. *The agent knew we would go into the woods.
  335. *The sigil of Sir Marco Hewitt of Pascae, is an anchor in red and blue.
  336.
  337. Romance and other stuff
  338. -Mademoiselle Ava Sinclair likes falconry, walks on the woods, has a collection of rare flowers
