  1. >You wake up to the sound of someone knocking on your door.
  2. >As you regain your senses, you feel the soft silk sheets of an unfamiliar bed.
  3. >The knocking continues, and from the echo you tell the room is larger than your one bedroom apartment.
  4. ‘Who is it?’ you call out.
  5. >’Anonymous?’ comes a familiar voice. ‘Are you okay?’
  6. ‘Yes Celestia. Just a little unfamiliar with being in…’ you wave your arms around ‘….here.’
  7. >’May I come in?’
  8. ‘Depends. You going to stare at me?’
  9. >The room went completely silent, and you chuckle.
  10. ‘Yes, Princess. You can come in.’
  11. >As you hear the door latch lift and Celestia walk inside, you take the chance to lift yourself into a sitting position.
  12. >’May I have a seat?’
  13. ‘Uh… Celestia?’
  14. >’Oh, right… Umm, can I sit on the end of your bed?’
  15. ‘Of course.’
  16. >You swing yourself so your legs fall off the bed and to the floor and feel around for your shirt.
  17. >’Anon.’
  18. >You turn your head to make it feel like you are interacting.
  19. >’I wanted to say—My word!’
  20. >What? That was fairly rude.
  21. >’Anon, your eyes…’
  22. >Your eyes widen and you reach up to find that your sunglasses were missing.
  23. >So, at that very moment, Celestia was probably looking into your milky-white eyes.
  24. ‘Ah, sorry. Can you help me find my sunglasses?’
  25. >’Of course.’
  26. >As you find your shirt, you stand and slide it over your head.
  27. >’I’m sorry I was so shocked. I thought that humans were born with those black coverings for their eyes.’
  28. ‘Heheheheh, oh no. No, they are an accessory.’
  29.
  30. >You feel an invisible force push you backwards to the bed, and you take a seat.
  31. >’Do they serve a purpose?’
  32. >You take a deep breath, and sigh.
  33. ‘They make others feel better about themselves. And as you have demonstrated, that’s what happens when I don’t wear them.’
  34. >’Anon, I am so very sorry about my reaction.’
  35. ‘No, you would have found out eventually. You took it very well.’
  36. >’But I should be more considerate of other species. I am a ruler, after all.’
  37. >You reach your hand up, and swat around the air near where Celestia’s voice came from.
  38. ‘Where are you?’
  39. >Celestia brings her face into your hand, and you stroke her cheek softly…
  40. >…before giving her nose a good flick.
  41. ‘Bad princess. No moping.’
  42. >’Oh, you are going to pay for that.’
  43. >You feel the same force from before push you down onto the bed, despite you fighting back.
  44. >On your left cheek, you feel a soft breath.
  45. >’Anon,’ Celestia lets out a breathy whisper ‘I’ve wanted to do this for a while.’
  46. >You tense up, expecting the worst, only for your sunglasses to slide onto your face.
  47. >’You are such a worry wart.’
  48. >You feel your bed shift and hear the sound of Celestia walking away.
  49. >’Also, you left your belongings in the sitting room, so I felt I should drop them off.’
  50. >You sit up and readjust your sunglasses.
  51. ‘Oh, thanks. Are we going back to questions?’
  52. >’No, I have duties to do today. Shall I send for some tea and something to snack on?’
  53. ‘Umm…okay. Can you ask who ever needs to bring to me not to look at me?’
  54. >’Anon, they will meet you eventually.’
  55. ‘Yes, but one on one style might freak them out.
  56. >’I see. Well, good day Anon.’
  57. ‘Bye Celestia.’
  58.
  59. >As you walk around your room, you realise that Celestia said she brought your bag, but she never said where it was.
  60. >You eventually find it leaning up against a wall next to a door. Where the door leads in another question?
  61. >As you lean down to grab your bag, a loud knock comes from the door.
  62. ‘AHHH!’ you scream in surprise.
  63. >’Sir?’
  64. ‘WHAT THE FUCK?! A TALKING DOOR!!’
  65. >’Sir, the Princess sent me to deliver your tea and snacks. Can I come in?’
  66. ‘Uhh… Give me a minute.’
  67. >You snatch your bag and stumble around blindly.
  68. >Wow, you went there, didn’t you?
  69. >Your hand finds a cold door handle and you quickly open it.
  70. ‘Okay, you can come in now.’ You say, hiding behind the open door.
  71. >You hear the door on the other side of the room open and the sound of soft hoofsteps enter.
  72. >’Uh, sir?’ comes a female voice.
  73. ‘Yes, I’m here. I’m just…busy.’
  74. >’Do you know you are “busy” on the balcony?’
  75. ‘Yes. Yes I am.’
  76. >’And did you realise that the door is made of glass?’ she said in a monotone voice.
  77. >You go silent.
  78. >’Would you like to come out of hiding, Sir?’
  79. ‘… I don’t know.’
  80. >’You don’t know if you want to come out of hiding?’
  81. ‘Yes.’
  82. >’Sir, the Princess has asked I check up on you. I would like to do my job and be on my way.’
  83. ‘Do… do you promise not to freak out?’
  84. >’At what?’
  85. ‘My appearance.’
  86. >’Please just come out…’
  87.
  88. >You slide yourself out from behind the door and begin to feel nervous, preempting the horrific scream to come.
  89. >A scream that isn’t there.
  90. >’Where would you like to have tea, sir?’
  91. ‘Huh?’
  92. >’Tea. You drink it. The princess said you liked it.’
  93. ‘Aren’t you afraid?’
  94. >’Of what?’
  95. ‘How I look?’
  96. >’Well, your attire looks ridiculous, and you are quite tall, but I grew up in the castle. I’m used to delegates from other nations visiting. Now about your tea?’
  97. ‘Wait. What has Celestia told you about me?’
  98. >’You were a neighbouring diplomat. Your name is Anonymous. You drink tea. Oh, and you are…’ she trails off, realising her faux pas. ‘…blind.’
  99. ‘Yeah. And I sort of don’t know where anything is in this room.’
  100. >’Please sir, forgive me. I do not want to lose my job because of my rudeness.’
  101. ‘Well…’
  102. >A smile grows on your face.
  103. ‘The princess told you to make sure I am alright, yes?’
  104. >’Yes, sir,’ she mumbles.
  105. ‘Does that mean you must do as I request if it is simple?’
  106. >’Uh… kinda? Where is this going, sir?’
  107. ‘I have two requests. One, you sit down and have tea with me. Maybe a chat if you feel up to it.’
  108. >’But sir, I have to get back to work.’
  109. ‘But this can be work.’ You straighten yourself up, and put on a posh tone. ‘You are assisting a foreign delegate in adjusting to a new land by showing hospitality.’
  110. >She giggles at your impersonation, before saying ‘Yes, sir. I can do that.’
  111. ‘And two. Please stop calling me “sir”. Anon is fine, Miss…’
  112. >You stand there in silence, and you swear you can hear her shuffling her hoof on the tiles.
  113. >’It’s Feather Duster.’
  114.
  115. >Your reaction was not the best of ones. You may have proven your childishness to the second sentient pony you have met.
  116. >You sort of… laughed your ass off.
  117. >After a few minutes of painful laughter, you calm down to realise you fucked up.
  118. ‘I’m sorry Miss Feather Duster. That was completely rude of me.’
  119. >’You bet your flank it was,’ She growled. ‘but we can call it even now.’
  120. ‘Thank you. Uhh… where did you want to have tea?’
  121. >’Oh, uh… well, there is a desk over there.’
  122. ‘Nice to know. Except where “over there” is.’
  123. >’Oh, yeah.’ Feather chuckles nervously. ‘ Look, this might sound rude and all, but do you know what a clock’s face looks like?’
  124. >Your eyes widen and you smile a large grin.
  125. ‘That is a great idea. I used to do that as a kid when I ate dinner.’
  126. >’Great.’ Feather’s tone of voice was bright and cheery again. ‘The desk is at 10 o’clock. We can have tea there if you like.’
  127. >You nod and unfold your cane, before grabbing your bag and slowly walking forwards.
  128. >When you find the chair, you sit down and place the bag by your feet with your folded cane.
  129. >Feather’s hoofsteps approach you cautiously, and the clang of a metal tray comes from in front of you.
  130. >’Would you like me to pour the tea?’
  131. ‘What, are you expecting the blind guy to do it? I can try, if you want. No promises it'll end well.’
  132. >You hear her place a ceramic cup in front of you, before pouring tea into it.
  133. >You lightly brush your fingers around the desk, placing to memory where the cup sits, before picking it up and taking a sip.
  134. >As you place it down, you smile.
  135. ‘Feather? Why are you trying to sneak away?’
  136.
  137. >You almost lose your composure when you hear her squeak.
  138. >’Huh…?’
  139. ‘You are trying to sneak away. I can hear you trying to hold your breath and tread lightly. I asked you to stay and have tea with me.’
  140. >’Well, it’s just-‘
  141. ‘Were you planning on just sneaking out?’
  142. >’No, I just-‘
  143. ‘Just going to let me talk to myself?’
  144. >’NO! I was just-‘
  145. ‘Is it because I am blind?’
  146. >’No! It’s just-‘
  147. ‘Because I’m different?’
  148. >’Of course not! I just thought-‘
  149. ‘Then why in the blue blazes were you sneaking away from me?!’
  150. >’YOU ARE BEING NICE TO ME!!’
  151. >The room falls silent, apart from the sound of Feather’s heavy breathing.
  152. >’You are the first creature who has asked me to spend time with them, and I know you want something from me.’
  153. ‘Oh crap, you caught me! I actually wanted to make a friend in this place,’ you chuckle. ‘Dammit, how will I make friends now?’
  154. >You lift the cup back to your lips and take another sip before sitting back in silence.
  155. >After an awkward silence, you hear the soft hoofsteps of Feather’s return.
  156. ‘Thank you for coming back.’
  157. >’All you want is friends?’
  158. ‘Yes.’
  159. >’And why me?’
  160. ‘You are the second pony I have met, and you have accepted me. Is there any reason for you not to be my friend?’
  161. >Feather pulls up a chair and pours some tea for herself.
  162. >’Well, you know I’m part of the help?’
  163. ‘Yes. So?’
  164. >’Doesn’t it bother you?’
  165. ‘Oh god no. Why do you ask?’
  166. >’Ponies are all nice but when we host a gryphon or a dragon, they speak down to us.’
  167.
  168. ‘But I don’t care where you are in the feudal system. Technically I’m a nobody, which makes me the best creature to be friends with.’
  169. >’How?’
  170. ‘Someone asks who you were talking to. You say “Nobody”.’
  171. >You smile wide and Feather giggles.
  172. >’Cake?’
  173. ‘Oh, I love cake. What kind?’
  174. >’We have raspberry shortcake, vanilla slice, blueberry Danish or banana bread.’
  175. ‘They all smell delicious. You can choose for me.’
  176. >Feather places a plate next to your tea cup and you smell the raspberry aroma.
  177. ‘So, uh, weird question. Can I touch your face?’
  178. >’Can I boop your butt?’
  179. ‘Yes.’
  180. >’What?’
  181. ‘What? Weren’t you serious? Because I was.’
  182. >’Serious about the face or the butt?’
  183. ‘The face. Did you really want to touch my butt?’
  184. >’Not really. Why do you want to touch my face?’
  185. ‘It’s so I can see who I am talking to. I did it to Celestia, and she seemed okay with it. But I don’t want to pressure you. It’s okay if you feel uncomfortable.’
  186. >’Well, it’s just… nopony has ever asked to touch my face.’
  187. ‘Have you ever dealt with a blind pony?’
  188. >’No, not really.’ Feather takes a sip of her tea. ‘Okay, you can.’
  189. >You smile and slowly reach out with your hands.
  190. >The minute you touch her fur, you notice the difference in textures.
  191. ‘Wow…’
  192. >’What? What is it?’
  193. ‘No, nothing. It’s just your fur is so different from Celestia’s. Hers was very soft, but yours is like velvet.’
  194. >Heat rises from her face and you realise you made her blush.
  195. ‘You also have a different shaped face. It’s nice. Diversity and such.’
  196. >’H-have you done this a lot before?’
  197. ‘On ponies? Just you and Celestia. Humans are different.’
  198.
  199. >You make your way up, feeling the tickle of her eyelashes.
  200. ‘They need to trust you completely before they let you do this.’
  201. >’Human. That’s what you are?’
  202. ‘Yes. Celestia said I look like a minotaur or an ape, but human is what I am.’
  203. >’Well I didn’t want to mention it…’
  204. >You chuckle as you reach the top of her head.
  205. >Again, you feel a bone protruding from her forehead, though this one was more rounded and shorter.
  206. >Feather squeaked again as you touched her horn lightly and you quickly snatch your hands away.
  207. ‘I’m sorry. Did I hurt you?’
  208. >’No, it just felt…weird for somepony to touch my horn.’
  209. >Another question comes to your mind from last night.
  210. ‘Feather, can you help me understand something.’
  211. >’I can try.’
  212. ‘Well, Celestia said she was an Alicorn, but the species here was pony. What other races are there?’
  213. >’Well, the princesses are Alicorns. They are few in number, but are very powerful. Graced with both a horn and wings.’
  214. >Your eyes went wide.
  215. ‘A horn and wings?!’
  216. >’Yes. Then there are unicorns, like me. Pegasi have wings, and finally there are earth ponies.’
  217. ‘What are earth ponies?’
  218. >’They don’t have any extra limbs, but they are strong. Some say they have a connection with the ground like no other.’
  219. ‘So, what’s so great about having a horn? Pegasi can fly and earth ponies can beat others up.’
  220. >’Well, with the aid of their horn, Unicorns can use magic.’
  221.
  222. >You almost do a spit take, coughing away any tea you had in your mouth.
  223. ‘Magic…?’ you groan.
  224. >’Yeah. Unicorns can use magic. Some are just more skilled at it than others.’
  225. ‘I’m sorry, but I can’t believe magic is real. It’s just a fairy tale in my world.’
  226. >’Oh really.’
  227. >A warm sensation surrounds you and your stomach suddenly feels like it is going to fall out of your mouth.
  228. ‘Feather!’ you cry. ‘Feather, what are you doing?!’
  229. >’Well, right now I am levitating you upside down.’
  230. >You grip your chair in fear.
  231. ‘Can you please not?!’
  232. >’Why? Afraid of heights?’
  233. ‘No. I couldn’t care less about heights. I am afraid of not knowing when someone is doing something to me.’
  234. >Feather gasps and you find yourself quickly back upright, your feet planted firmly on the floor.
  235. >’Anon, I’m sorry. I forgot and I got carried away.’
  236. >You let out a chuckle and pat her on the head.
  237. ‘It’s all good. No harm done. Just warn me next time you want to do that so I know.’
  238. >You take a bite of your raspberry shortcake, savouring the new taste.
  239. ‘Mmm…this is good. Which one are you having?’
  240. >’Me?’
  241. ‘Yes. You are allowed to eat one as well. I doubt I could eat them all. Don’t wanna be a fatty.’
  242. >Feather Duster giggles.
  243. >’I have always loved blueberries, so I might have the Danish.’
  244. ‘Good choice.’ You take a sip of your tea before raising an eyebrow. ‘Hey Feather. Celestia can do magic too, right?’
  245. >’Yes. Her magic is very strong too.’
  246. ‘Do you know of a spell that sounds like lightning?’
  247. >’Sounds like?’
  248. >You tap the side of your sunglasses.
  249.
  250. >’Oh, yes. Well I would automatically say any spells that harness lightning, but those are complex. A simpler one would be teleportation, but only a select few can do that too. Why do you ask?’
  251. ‘No reason.’
  252. >’You know, for a blind creature, you really suck at lying.’
  253. ‘Yes, I do know that.’
  254. >You take another sip of your tea, and marvel at the infused flavours.
  255. >You never used to like tea, so this was a shock.
  256. >’Anon, aren’t you going to tell me the truth?’
  257. ‘No, I don’t really…’ a smile crosses your face. ‘Okay. I’ll tell you if you answer something for me.’
  258. >’Okay.’
  259. ‘Celestia tried to hide in my room last night, and when I call asked her to leave, there was a loud crack followed by silence. I was just curious about what happened.’
  260. >’Oh? I wonder what the princess was doing?’
  261. ‘I don’t really care. She is gracious enough to shelter me.’
  262. >’Well, she is a very nice ruler. What did you want me to answer?’
  263. >A huge grin grows on your face.
  264. ‘Do you find it funny that your name is Feather Duster and you are a maid?’
  265. >’Really?’ Her tone sounded grumpy.
  266. ‘Well, I’m sorry, but that’s why I laughed.’
  267. >’You are so immature. But no, I do not find it funny. Ponies all have names like that in Equestria.’ Feather stifles a giggle. ‘Okay, well there is one.’
  268. ‘Who? Come on, you need to tell me.’
  269. >’Well, one of the night guards is named…’ She giggles again ‘… Sunshine Smiles.’
  270. >You couldn’t hold back your laughter.
  271. >You laughed and laughed until tears formed in your eyes, and Feather joined in.
  272.
  273. >When you finally calm down, breathing deeply, you wipe away your tears.
  274. ‘Oh god, I haven’t laughed that hard in ages.’
  275. >’Me neither.’ Her tone became more depressed. ‘I actually had fun talking with you, Anon.’
  276. ‘I did too. I mean, new place, new species. I thought I would be locked up for testing, but when Celestia spoke to me like I was… normal, I don’t know, I felt less afraid.’
  277. >’Well, I should be going.’
  278. ‘What? Why?’
  279. >’Anon, it’s almost dinner time.’
  280. ‘Oh…’
  281. >’Gosh, what would you do without me, Anon?’
  282. >You laugh, and shake your head.
  283. ‘Feather Duster, I actually enjoyed today. I haven’t had fun in… oh, ages.’
  284. >’I had fun too. You talk to me like I am an equal.’
  285. >You flick her nose and smile.
  286. ‘I would like you to stop talking about yourself like that. You need to remember I am not royalty, nor am I special. I am a commoner, a human,’ you reach out your hand, ‘and your friend.’
  287. >You wait only a few seconds when you feel a hoof fall into your hand.
  288. >’Okay Anonymous. I will try.’
  289. >Feather gets to her hooves and lifts the tray off the desk.
  290. >You stand up and follow Feather’s hoofsteps to the door, opening it for you.
  291. >’Thank you again, Anon.’
  292. ‘Nonsense. I must thank you. You put up with me, did you not?’
  293. >Feather Duster giggled. ‘Yes, I did. I hope to see you again, Anon.’
  294. ‘Oh, that must be very nice, seeing and all.’
  295. >’Oh, be quiet. You know what I mean.’
  296. ‘Darn. I thought you would fall for that.’
  297. >’Not anymore. Good night Anon.’
  298. ‘Good evening Feather.’
  299. >You close the door behind her, and turn around.
  300. ‘And hello Princess Celestia.’
  301.
  302. >As you walk forwards, you hear hoofsteps walk in from the balcony.
  303. >’Anon, why must you ruin my fun?’
  304. ‘Why must you spy on me?’
  305. >’I mean no disrespect in this, but when Miss Duster did not return-‘
  306. ‘You became worried and had to check up on her. I understand.’
  307. >’I was glad to see she was fine, though I had no doubt you were no danger to her. I am happy you found another friend.’
  308. ‘Thank you Celestia. How was your day?’
  309. >You hear her stop by your bed before taking a seat and you choose the desk chair.
  310. >’It was…exhausting. I do enjoy my subjects, but it does take a lot out of me. I was hoping we could postpone tonight, but seeing as you already had a good talk with Feather Duster, I don’t think you need to be questioned anymore.’
  311. ‘Oh?’
  312. >This surprised you a little.
  313. ‘You only wanted to talk to me to see if I was a danger?’
  314. >’Yes, that is true. I said you were under my protection, but I have a duty to protect my ponies.’
  315. >You smile at Celestia and nod.
  316. ‘I understand completely. I’m glad to see I have your trust.’
  317. >’Well, that was another thing. We have one last obstacle to overcome, and then you can be free, so to speak.’
  318. ‘Oh, I’m a prisoner now?’
  319. >Celestia chuckled. ‘I liked to think “refugee”, or even “diplomat of a new species”.’
  320. ‘You spoil me Princess. What, may I ask, is this last obstacle?’
  321.
  322. >Celestia tells you the entire plan and you sit quietly, nodding along.
  323. >’So, are you up to that?’
  324. ‘I can only do my best. Can I make one request?’
  325. >’You may.’
  326. ‘As well as the big guy, can I also bring along a friend?’
  327. >’Consider it done. I should retire for now. Would you like something for dinner?’
  328. ‘No thank you. I might just relax. Maybe a fresh pot of tea, if you have time.’
  329. >Celestia agrees, and leaves through the window.
  330. >You spin around to the desk, reaching into your bag and pulling out one of your books.
  331. >It was a normal brown book, no writing on the cover, but dots on the spine.
  332. >You open the book to the marked page and continue your reading, brushing your fingertip over the braille writing.
  333. ‘In a Wonderland they lie, dreaming as the days go by, dreaming as the summer die. Ever drifting down the stream. Lingering in the golden gleam. Life, what is it but a dream?’
