  1. And Merlin went off and drew with a staff a ring in the middle of a heath; then he came back to the maiden and sat down again at the spring. But it was not long before the maiden looked and saw ladies, knights, maidens, and squires in great number coming out of the Forest of Briosque. They were holding hands and came singing and making merry as no one had ever seen, and tumblers, dancers, and musicians passed before the maiden and gathered all around the ring that Merlin had drawn. And after they had gone inside, there began such wonderful singing and dancing that no one could tell a fourth of the merriment there. And Merlin raised up a castle fair and strong, and beneath it an orchard with all the good smells in the world; the blossoms and fruit gave off such a sweet smell that it is wonderful to tell about. The maiden, who heard and saw all of this, was so astounded by the wonder she beheld and so happy looking at it that she was speechless; and she was so bewildered that she did not know what song they were singing unless they sang it again. Truly, love begins in happiness and ends in grief! Their merrymaking went on thus from the ninth hour until vespers; people heard the noise far away, and it was loud and clear and delightful to listen to.
