Other elves are too horrified by the prospect of dark magic to even try it, because they can't get past the need for magical life, so they wouldn't know that while it does in fact negatively impact elves as well as humans, it doesn't do it in the same way
Because they're all connected to their own individual primal sources, he might not have access to his own source but with enough trust and familiarity and openness, he can tap into her connection with the flora and fauna of the earth to stave off the worst of the effects
Nature, after all, is the best healer out there
Before, he was doing something similar to Viren, just stealing more essence to make himself look more presentable without treating the underlying cause

I feel like a big part of why it works so well is that she doesn’t, like, feel upset by the concept of him killing and lets him operate with no pressure and no judgement even if it does happen because she’s been 100% ‘it’s like milking a cow, except you’re milking out it’s life juice’ pretty much since they ran into each other

It wouldn’t work w/ another type of elf because a lot of them don’t understand that the earths inhabitants eat each other alive regardless, and that sometimes that’s just what needs to be done to survive— to thrive!
It’s under the same principle of using every part of an animal, except there’s an additional part— that primal energy in them that would otherwise just flow away and go unused until something new was born that used it
It’s a matter of respecting the creature that’s giving you so much, and I think that’s all that she really asks of him when they try to use their shit together the first time
Also: it’s a very pretty concept to think abt them sitting with, like, a little magic meat rabbit or something that she’s raised for a while who she offers to him as a, like, show of trust

As with everything magic that you KNOW I'm into, it's amplified by them touching skin-to-skin (that MUTUAL STAR FREQUENCY, BAYBEY) and he's got a really hard time tapping into it if they're any kind of distance apart, which is something they can work on when life inevitably comes to bust down their door
