“Out of curiosity,” Tomochika asked, “how would your power get us out of here if they did leave us to starve?”

“Hmm. In a normal prison, I’d just kill the iron bars or the walls to make a way outside.”

“But we’re floating in some sort of weird empty space, right?”

“Indeed. We are in an entirely different place, unconnected to the pyramid that led us here.”

“I don’t know that much about physics or space and dimension stuff, so this is going to sound pretty dubious,” Yogiri said. “Is that okay?”

“I’d be more confused if you did explain it to me with physics,” Tomochika replied.

“I think this place exists in something like a valley of space that connects something similar to separate locations together, or rather borders the room we were in only a moment ago.”

“Okay, I’m already lost!” she exclaimed.

“Yeah, well, I guess there’s no guarantee I’m right anyway. It’s like how you can suddenly slip into another world when you’re spirited away, right?”

“You make it sound like that’s a normal thing that happens...but okay, I think I understand. Maybe.”

“Anyway, if we assume it’s something like that,” Yogiri continued, “in cases where the spaces are close enough that I feel I can come and go immediately, it's possible to open a hole by killing something like a wall that exists between the spaces with my power. You can pass through that opening to return to the original space.”

“That sounds like a pretty big ‘if’ to me.”

“I can only explain things through my senses, after all. I don’t know the logic behind it.”

Though he had no proof he was correct or any way to prove his assumptions, she had no option but to assume that his vague conjecture was right. Explaining the logic that made a foreign world work was a losing proposition in the first place.

“So you think that you can at least get us back to where we were?” she asked.

“Probably. That’s the feeling I get.”

“That’s pretty vague...”

“That’s why I said we should just wait for a while.”

“Yeah, I don’t understand the logic, but I’ll trust you.” Though he knew explaining it in a way she would understand would be difficult, it seemed he had at least convinced her he could do something about their situation.

“Oh, if you can do that, can you just break the wall or whatever between worlds and get us back home?” she asked again.

“Yeah.”

“You’re right, that would be too easy. It’s not like our worlds are that close—wait, you can?!”

“If we run out of other options, I can do it.” Yogiri frowned. From his perspective, that was the absolute last resort. He wanted to avoid doing it at all costs. “I guess I should explain now.”

Without knowing what was going to happen in the future, he couldn’t rule out the possibility of using this method as an emergency escape to get them home safely. If that happened, he likely wouldn’t have the time to explain it then.

“Doing it is simple enough. All I have to do is kill all the stuff between this world and ours.”

“The ‘stuff’?”

“I don’t know what it is either. But it’s got to be something. Maybe even other worlds.”

“Well...we have acquired the coordinates of our home world, but we have no knowledge of how to use them, Mokomoko interjected. It is impossible to tell exactly what kind of distance separates us now. I do not know how to convert the information into an intelligible measure of distance.”

“So...we don’t really want to do that, do we?” As Tomochika worked through the consequences that would entail, her face started to pale.

“Yeah. My power is mostly for protecting myself. I can’t kill everything in my way just because I want to go home. But if we’re left with no other options...”

“I don’t know if I’m ready to do that in any situation!” They didn’t know what existed in the space up to their original world, but in the case there were worlds inhabited by intelligent life there, it seemed that would result in their complete destruction. That was far more of a burden than two high school students could bear. It was only natural that Tomochika would hesitate to do so.

「で、 一応 訊い て おき たい ん だ けど、 こんな 部屋 に 閉じ込め られ た 場合 って 高遠 くん の 力 で どうにか なる もん なの？」 「そう だ な。 たとえば ただ の 牢屋 とか に 閉じ込め られ た 場合 は、 鉄格子 なり 壁 なりを 殺せ ば 外 に 出 られる わけ な ん だ けど」 「でも、 この 部屋 って 謎 空間 に ある ん だ よね？」 『うむ。 先ほど まで おっ た ピラミッド の 上 に ある 神殿 とは 繫 がっ て い ない、 別 の 場所 という こと に なる な』 「俺 は 物理学 とか 空間 とか 次元 とか に 詳しい わけ じゃ ない から、 ここ からの 話 は ひどく ふんわり と し た 感じ に なる けど いい？」 「逆 に 物理学 の 専門的 な 話 をさ れ ても 困る ん だ けど」 「ここ みたい な 場所 は、 さっき まで い た 空間 と 隣り 合っ てる って いう か、 重なっ て 存在 する 狭間 の 空間 みたい な ところ な ん だ と 思う」 「さっそく わか ん ねぇ な！」 「うーん、 まあ 俺 が 言っ てる こと が 正しい 確証 なんて まるで ない ん だ けど さ。 何 かの 拍子 で ふと 紛れ込む 神隠し の 世界 と かっ て ある だろ？」 「常識 みたい に 言わ れ ても…… まあ、 なんとなく は わかる、 かな？」 「まあ、 そういう もん だ として さ。 すぐ に 行き来 できる よう な 近い 空間 の 場合 は、 俺 の 力 で 空間 の 間 に ある 壁 みたい なのを 殺して 穴 を 空ける こと は 可能 な ん だ。 その 穴 を 通れ ば 元 の 空間 に 戻る こと も できる」 「さすが に ふんわり し てる って 前置き する だけの こと は ある ね」 「俺 も 感覚的 に 捉え てる だけで、 何 の 理論的 説明 も でき ない から なぁ」 　 何 の 証拠 も ない し、 証明 も でき ない あやふや な 話 だっ た が なんとなく そういう もの と し て おく しか なかっ た。 そもそも 異 世界 の 現象 を 納得 できる 形 で 理解 する のも 説明 する のも 難しい だろ う。 「じゃあ 元 の 場所 に 戻る だけ なら どうにか なる って こと？」 「たぶん。 感覚的 には できる だろ う なっ て 気 は し てる」 「曖昧 だ なぁ……」 「だから とりあえず は のんびり 待っ てれ ば いい よ」 「うん。 理屈 は わかん ない けど、 高遠 くん を 信じる こと に する よ」 　 知 千 佳 に 理解 し て もらう のは 難しい と 思っ て い た が、 夜霧 が 対応 可能 で ある こと は 納得 し て くれ た よう だっ た。 「あ、 じゃあ さ。 空間 の 壁 を 壊し たり って ので 元 の 世界 に 戻っ たり は でき ない の？」 「できる よ」 「って 元 の 世界 は 近く に ある わけ じゃ ない から 無理…… って できる の!?」 「他 に 手段 が なけれ ば そう する しか ない って 方法 は ある」 　 夜霧 は 顔 を しかめ た。 夜霧 にとって は 本当に 最終 手段 で あり、 できれ ば やり たく は ない から だ。 「…… まあ 予め 説明 し て おい た ほう が いい か」今後 何 が 起こる か わから ない が、 緊急 手段 として その 方法 を 選ぶ こと が ある かも しれ ない し、 ギリギリ の 状況 では 説明 など し て い られ ない だろ う と 夜霧 は 考え た。 「やる こと は 単純 だ よ。 元 の 世界 と、 この 世界 の 間 に ある 何 かを 全部 殺し て なくし て しまえ ば いい」 「何 か…… って？」 「わから ない。 けど、 何かしら ある ん だろ う と 思う。 別 の 世界 とか そういった もの が」 『うむ…… 元 の 世界 の 座標 数値 を 知る こと は でき た が…… 具体的 に どう 使え ば いい のかは わから ぬ。 ここ から 元 の 世界 まで どの 程度 の 距離 が ある のかは さっぱり わから ん。 そもそも 単純 な 距離 に 換算 できる もの かも わから ぬ し な』 「それ は…… やら ない ほう が いい ね……」 　 具体的 に 想像 し た のか、 知 千 佳 の 顔 が 若干 青ざめ て い た。 「うん。 俺 が 力 を 使う のは、 基本 的 には 身 を 守る ため だ。 ただ 帰り たい って だけで、 間 に ある 何もかも を 殺し て いい って こと には なら ない よ。 でも…… 他 に 手段 が なけれ ば」 「さすが に そこ までの こと は ちょっと 覚悟 でき ない かな！」 　 元 の 世界 までの 間 に 何 が ある のかは わから ない が、 そこ に 知的生命 体 の 住む 世界 が ある の だ と すれ ば、 その 全て を 滅ぼす こと に なる だろ う。 そんな 業 を、 たかが 二人 の 高校生 が 背負い 切れる はず も ない。 知 千 佳 が 躊躇 する のも 当然 の こと だっ た。
