- Handout p. 94 - reduction of 3rd person pronouns
- he -> ‘e
- his -> ‘is
- him -> ‘im
- her -> ‘er
- them -> ‘em
- We say things like, “I’ll visit ‘em tomorrow,” which sounds the same as, “I’ll visit ‘im tomorrow.”
- We don’t drop the ‘h’ or ‘th’ at the beginning of a sentence, after a pause, or when the word is stressed.
- I wasn’t talking to you, I was talking to him. - “you” and “him” are both stressed, to show the contrast of incorrect and correct information. We don’t reduce stressed words.
- “You invited her to your party?” - “her” can be stressed or unstressed
- “You invited ‘er to your party?” (unstressed, reduced) = I’m just checking this information.
- “You invited her to your party?” (stressed, not reduced) = I’m surprised you invited her, and probably I’m unhappy, because I don’t want to see her.
- ---
- p. 94 part A - write the way that the words would be pronounced in the blank spaces (are they reduced or not?)

- What sentence sounds like “Willy Walker Katz”?
- - Will he walk her cats?
- This is sometimes called a Mondegreen, from a song where the lyric “and they laid him on the green” was heard as “and the Lady Mondegreen”.
