  3. Kamran thinks back to all of the drawings he’s seen of the Javaher Concourse, and the entire point of the place is that there’s only one way in or out. That’s part of the reason he feels safe here—or did until recently.

  5. “Air movement,” Marsalis taps out the words to her overdriven speaker. “Path open somewhere.”

  7. “Open, like…” Becker starts.

  9. Lips snarl in time with the words, though no sounds follow. “If I can find it… children can find it.”

  11. Kamran has to blunt the needle of panic forming inside him. This castle isn’t nearly as impregnable as he’d led himself to believe. He never should’ve survived being in the same room with the monsters the first time. He doubts he’ll survive another encounter.

  13. “As a rule, we assume that the x-rays can get into any place they can fit their heads,” Becker says. “If Marsalis says there’s an opening, then this place is compromised.”

  15. Kamran looks over Marsalis’s form: sleekness interrupted by spikes and ridges. It’s hard to imagine them folding inward to pass through a tight fit, but perhaps the creature bends in unpredictable ways. Perhaps all of them do.
