WORKING STRUCTURES OF THE NATO
NATO Delegations
each member country has a permanent delegation in Brussels
every delegation is headed by an “ambassador”
he/her represents the government in decision-making processes 1
North Atlantic Council
most important decision-making body at NATO
each member country has a seat
it meets at least once in the week
NAC is chaired by the Secretary General, who helps to reach an agreement 2
Nuclear Planning Group
same authority as the NAC regard to nuclear policy issues
for example: nuclear arms control and nuclear proliferation 3
Subordinate Committees
they deal with subjects from political to more technical issues
national representatives and experts have seat in there 1
Military Representatives
Military Committee
consists of the Chiefs of Defence of NATO member countries
links the political decision-making process and the military structure of NATO
responsible for translating political decision and guidance into military direction 4
Allied Command Operations (ACO)
its headquarters is at SHAPE near Mons, Belgium
aim is to “contribute to Allied defence and security by maintaining the integrity of Alliance territory, safeguarding freedom of the seas and economic lifelines, and to preserve or restore the security of its members” 5
Allied Command Transformation (ACT)
is headed by the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT)
SACT is responsible to the Military Committee for the transformation and development of the Alliance
is under the overall political authority of the North Atlantic Council (NAC)6
Secretary General
he/she is the Alliance’s top international civil servant
is NATO’s chief spokesperson
heads the Organisation’s International Staff
