  9. jujube95 2 days ago if i can be honest, it low-key bothers me that you've written an oc with an asian face and a black voice (azealia banks) with both backgrounds seemingly used as flavoring on top and nothing more
  10.
  11. jujube95 2 days ago i don't have a question or a legitimate concern, just something that's made me think
  12.
  13. ಠ_ಠ 2 days ago i don’t really think of her voice as black, i use azeia because she is so rude
  14.
  15. ಠ_ಠ 2 days ago i think last time i mentioned it i said the comparison was in speech pattern but has a huskier voice like Banks’ (another artist) singing voice
  16.
  17. ಠ_ಠ 2 days ago since Banks’ speaking voice is actually shier than I imagine also
  18.
  19. ಠ_ಠ 2 days ago so my idea of what she sounds like is cobbled together from a few different things
  20.
  21. ಠ_ಠ 2 days ago dunno if that helps clarify or not!
  22.
  23. jujube95 2 days ago it clarifies what you mean but doesn't address my discomfort, which i find hard to explain. it's the superficial way you use POC attributes like accessories to spice up the character without earnestly engaging with the context

  29. ಠ_ಠ 2 days ago Alright, I'm home and have washed the fake blood out of my hair. Thank you for the reading material, but I don't agree with your previous comment even after reading it. Still, if you're uncomfortable please feel free to PM me your account and I will definitely refrain from tagging you in the future.

  31. moon715 2 days ago I love Annie and never felt she was anything but her own voice
  32.
  33. moon715 2 days ago Actually it's refreshing to see an Asian character allowed to be as wild as her, because normally they're reserved to conservative shy roles
  34.
  35. moon715 2 days ago And knowing her backstory she's really fantasy / sci-fi where anyone is allowed to be anything
  36.
  37. moon715 2 days ago I want a movie of her haha
  38.
  39. gemini99 2 days ago I absolutely love your OCs and love how fully formed and engaging they are. I think the only crit that comes to mind is that sometimes it feels a little like you push their backgrounds so much (totally necessary for OCs) that you don't respond to other character backgrounds as much
  40.
  41. gemini99 2 days ago It may be more of an IC issue that the characters themselves are uncaring or dismissive, but it can make threads feel a little unbalanced
  42.
  43. gemini99 2 days ago It's definitely a very minor thing though and doesn't really impact my enjoyment of playing with you. I just thought I'd raise it.
  44.
  45. moon715 2 days ago I do agree, it makes hooks a little hard to grab and respond to, otherwise tagging with you is really fun
  46.
  47. ಠ_ಠ 2 days ago I have noticed this myself, Annie is particular is very self-focused, but that's not to say I haven't looked back on threads with other characters and gone 'I wish I'd gotten more of the other person here'
  48.
  49. ಠ_ಠ 2 days ago I don't always notice I'm doing it in the moment, but it is something I try to keep in mind, thank you.
  50.
  51. jujube95 2 days ago i insist that if you take attributes from certain cultures, you need to give it due engagement, without that it’s disrespectful and better done without. her wildness is a hypersexualization of asian women, stereotypical. a scifi background is not a cop out, “anyone is allowed to be anything” is a statement so ignorant of how the world works for poc.
  52.
  53. jujube95 2 days ago bottom line: if you want to rp a japanese-american, give that context due attention and engagement, or don’t even touch it. it’s not yours.
  54.
  55. loquat63 Yesterday jujube I think you've given vee plenty to think about. at this point if her response bothers you you need to take her up on her offer to not tag with her
  56.
  57. loquat95 Yesterday this is a plurk specifically made for hmd. there are great points being made here and so far, vee has brushed them aside. it's unfair to ask jujube to stop their thoughtful critique just because you don't like what's being said
  58.
  59. gemini99 Yesterday I think the concern is more escalation. Jujube has gone from "no legitimate concern" to "I insist", without anything particularly constructive. Not to dismiss their thoughts but perhaps some more pointers on how vee could integrate examination and acknowledgement into a character who grew up very removed from society and is now in a sci-fi game
  60.
  61. gemini99 Yesterday where such context being raised could be difficult and perhaps skew too far the other way into "otherness" if it was overly forced
  62.
  63. loquat63 Yesterday ^^^
  64.
  65. loquat95 Yesterday out of curiosity, why did you make annie japanese-american? did the decision come after or before you chose eriko nakao as her pb? would annie's character be changed considerably if she were white?
  66.
  67. loquat95 Yesterday why does FGM feature in idle's backstory, when the practice is almost exclusively afro-arab and idle is a blonde, blue eyed white girl? there's an arabic quote in her bio as well; are the two related by any chance?
  68.
  69. loquat95 Yesterday in an earlier plurk you mentioned that you were an "edgelord" because you incorporated FGM into your white OC's backstory. do you think this is disrespectful or crass?
  70.
  71. ಠ_ಠ Yesterday Annie wasn't raised in or with Japanese culture. Eriko had the kind of fun style and facial expressions I was looking for in the character. Eriko herself is in to punk music and artistry and some of the other things Annie is in to, I think that's fun. I like learning about new punk bands from her Insta. Annie would not be any different if she were white.
  72.
  73. ಠ_ಠ Yesterday FGM features in the story of the Burned World because it's was something I wrote as a teen to explore my feelings about toxic masculinity, power, rape, misogyny, self-hating misogyny, etc. FGM fit in to those themes, and made sense as something very toxic and insane Dreus would do out of a misguided sense of love for someone.
  74.
  75. ಠ_ಠ Yesterday I self-denigrate about being an edgelord because I've been called that before by anons, they generally don't like the Cartazonos verse, but I think it has a lot variety to explore in terms of roleplaying, so I keep doing it.
  76.
  77. ಠ_ಠ Yesterday the arabic on Ilde's profile is the name of the castor constellation, which was her brood sign.
  78.
  79. zebra859 Yesterday This feels like it's moved from con-crit to "you must justify why you made these decisions to my satisfaction".
  80.
  81. ox583 Yesterday I don't see how these cultural aspects should be incorporated into verses and contexts where they don't seem to apply? ilde is from a fantasy setting, annie wasnt even raised by her family as far as i can recall. im not trying to continue an argument in this plurk, but you ought to familiarize yourself with the stories
  82.
  83. ox583 Yesterday I understand why you'd be concerned, just not with these characters
  84.
  85. ox583 Yesterday anyway vee tag me more even though it's my turn to tag you, shut up
  86.
  87. moon715 Yesterday Agreeing with ox here, this feels like entrapment
  88.
  89. loquat95 Yesterday you are pretending as if FGM is an issue you can conveniently de-racialize. you can't de-racialize the issue of FGM, no more than you can de-racialize the issue of police brutality or slavery.
  90.
  91. loquat95 Yesterday the way you talk about it here suggests you view this (again, exclusively afro-arab) issue as little more than fodder for your ~imaginationz; something to "edge" your characters up as you've previously mentioned. your nonchalance is startling. you continue to dismiss the racial aspect as irrelevant to your white fantasy setting.
  92.
  93. loquat95 Yesterday FGM isn't, as hooks said, "scenery for narratives that focus on white people". at the end of the day, this is just roleplay and you will forget about this critique and continue to write your racist OCs unimpeded. but my life has been affected by FGM; i am personally affected by the practice, and i just want to say: fuck you.
  94.
  95. ಠ_ಠ Yesterday As I offered before, please feel free to PM me your accounts so that I can refrain from tagging you.
  96.
  97. ಠ_ಠ Yesterday Secondly, Ilde has not re-entered the game yet. If you feel strongly about this issue, I suggest you outline your concerns to the moderators.
  98.
  99. tiger419 Yesterday saying these ocs are from fantasy or scifi settings doesn't excuse the way you've sampled poc attributes. fantasy and scifi don't exist in a vacuum. i hope you listen to what loquat and jujube were trying to explain instead of ignoring it.
  100.
  101. jujube95 Yesterday i did escalate. vee’s dismissal of the concerns shows to me the root of my discomfort, using “fun” as a reason to sample poc attributes then dismissing us by asserting individualism. it’s us against her, “dont tag me if you dont like it,” instead of taking responsibility when you borrow from cultures. i see that same dismissiveness is a theme.
  102.
  103. olive567 Yesterday but my life has been affected by FGM; i am personally affected by the practice, and i just want to say: fuck you you are obviously (and understandably) taking this personally but coming at this hostilely (again understandable) is not helping either side here
  104.
  105. olive567 Yesterday both sides need to step away, calm down, and then maybe use a mediator to try and work things out. or just say fuck it and don't tag each other
  106.
  107. loquat95 Yesterday don't accuse me of being the angry, unmanageable poc who needs to "calm down". that's a old trick. trust me, i'm chilling. we're all anon here. i and others have calmly set out our criticisms. bee has continued to deflect us not once, twice, thrice, but four separate times.
  108.
  109. loquat95 Yesterday when i say fuck her, i'm being easy on bee. don't worry about me. with that being said, fuck you for trying to presume what i feel and why i feel it.
  110.
  111. olive567 Yesterday I'm sorry that's how I may have come off, but that's the tone I read in your words. and yes I know tone and words - but I have yet to ever hear someone say "fuck you" and not be pissed off doesn't matter what race/gender/age a person is
  112.
  113. olive567 Yesterday by the same note, you're saying vee has deflected on you but are you not taking a stand of assuming her tone from her words? what would it take for you to be happy in this instance? what could she say or do?
  114.
  115. loquat95 Yesterday are you for real. deflected, as in an issue has been raised repeatedly and vee has neglected to respond to it over the course of this plurk. she is deflecting the discussion of her racism outright ("don't tag me").
  116.
  117. loquat95 Yesterday i am not making any assumptions about her tone, because i cannot make any assumptions about her tone as she has not said anything for me to project assumptions onto, period. that's the point.
  118.
  119. loquat95 Yesterday i can't tell if you're being purposely dense or your reading comprehension skills are actually this poor. i know it must be so hard, wanting to rehabilitate your friend behind your keyboard, but vee is a big girl and she doesn't need a white knight to swoop in and save her from the scary Anons of Colour and their allegations of Raceezm.
  120.
  121. loquat95 Yesterday but as it is becoming more and more apparent vee will never be responding to our concerns (gee, i wonder why) i will say congratulations for derailing this plurk, rockstar. a warm fuck you again, just for you.
  122.
  123. ox583 Yesterday stop
  124.
  125. loquat95 Yesterday no.
  126.
  127. tiger419 21 hours ago she should withdraw her ilde app.
  128.
  129. ox583 21 hours ago stop
  130.
  131. loquat95 20 hours ago frankly i don't give a single niggling fuck about what happens with her racist OCs. i would like her to be responsive to these criticisms, especially on the issue of FGM, which my mother was a victim of and i was very close to being a victim of myself. something that attempts to go beyond "don't like it, don't tag me".
  132.
  133. loquat95 20 hours ago i would like her to acknowledge that she is attempting to de-racialize an issue that cannot be de-racialized. i would like her to acknowledge that she has attempted to ignore us four separate times like a coward.
  134.
  135. loquat95 20 hours ago and if she continues to play ilde after this then so be it. that will be a reflection of her character and how much she really cares about ""feminism"" and the ""woc issuez"" she loves to use as spice for her characters.
  136.
  137. jujube95 20 hours ago i started this critique assuming good intent on vee's part and willingness to listen and improve, but i've seen little sign of this. regardless, i have stated my points as clearly as i am able. i will list below a few more reading materials. maybe these can explain my points better and help her understand the harm she's causing and the reason for our outrage

  156. solar291 19 hours ago insulating vee from crit she solicited instead of urging her to listen to the people in this plurk explaining why her ocs are harmful isn't helping her.
  157.
  158. solar291 19 hours ago she shouldn't continue to play annie or ilde without taking steps to understand the harm she's done and making serious changes to their backstories. jujube's links would be a good place to start.
