  943.
  944. PARKS
  945. So if it goes off, there's not
  946. pieces of me inside of you. Plus,

  1284.
  1285. TORRES
1286. Fuck you cabron, I don't need to

  1522.
  1523. Parks glares at James.
  1524.
  1525. PARKS

  1616.
  1617. JAMES
1618. You think I should call Doc?
  1619.
1620. Parks shakes his head and starts to take the bandages off of
  1621. his shoulder, finding it...
  1622.
1623. ...As if it were unscathed by the round that had struck him.
  1624. All that's left is a scar.
  1625.
1626. Parks takes a deep breath.
  1627.
  1628. PARKS
1629. What the fuck was that man?
  1630.
1631. James just shrugs, his eyes widened.

1848. However, and Mrs. Hawkins please
1849. correct me if I'm wrong- He was
1850. often times trying to correct

  1854. set of goals.
  1855.
  1856. The audience goes silent.
  1857.
  1858. PARKS (CONT’D)
1859. He'd ask me what he missed out on.
1860. How he could do his job better, how
1861. he could keep both of us safe.
  1862.
  1863. Parks chuckles.
  1864.
  1865. PARKS (CONT’D)
1866. He was obsessive with his notes and
1867. trying to better himself as an
1868. officer. Even in his final moments,
1869. he was listening to me, using
  1870. everything he learned...
  1871.
1872. Parks looks down and sets his notecards aside.
  1873.
  1874. PARKS (CONT’D)
1875. In all, we lost him. He was good.
  1876.
1877. He steps off the podium and walks back to his seat. He spots
1878. MARK DIAZ, (late-20s) sitting in the back of the room.
  1879.
  1880. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1881. Reporter?
  1882.
  1883. Parks sits back down.
  1884.
  1885. HILL
1886. At this time, I will be speaking
  1887. with Mrs. Hawkins. Refreshments
1888. will be served in the room to my
  1889. right.
  1890.
1891. People around Parks begin to stand up and converse amongst
1892. themselves. Parks makes his way over to Mark.
  1893.
1894. He continues to move over to where Mark is. Mark jots
1895. something down "unaware" in his phone next to Parks's name.
  1896.
  1897. PARKS
1898. You better have a good reason to be
  1899. here.
  1900.
1901. Mark stands up and smiles at Parks.
  1902.
  1903. MARK
1904. Step outside with me, I need a few
  1905. words with you.
  1906.
  1907. PARKS
  1908. Like hell you do!
  1909.
1910. People glance over at him.
  1911.
  1912. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1913. (hushed)
  1914. Like hell you do.
  1915.
  1916. MARK
  1917. See what I mean?
  1918.
1919. Mark puts his phone in his pocket. He stands up and walks
  1920. with Parks.
  1921.
  1922. Mark looks forward.
  1923.
  1924. MARK (CONT’D)
  1925. (whispering)
1926. Look, more people who have no idea
  1927. what you've actually just
  1928. uncovered.
  1929.
1930. LAYLA HAWKINS, (22) suddenly holds Parks, sobbing.
  1931.
  1932. LAYLA
  1933. He's never coming back! He's never
  1934. coming back.
  1935.
1936. Parks's eyes widen as he holds her.
  1937.
1938. A look of shock in Parks's eyes. Mark walks up behind her and
1939. taps her on the shoulder.
  1940.
  1941. She turns around.
  1942.
1943. He pulls out a handkerchief and passes it to her.
  1944.
  1945. MARK
1946. Mrs. Hawkins, your husband was a
1947. hero who handled the situation as
  1948. best he could.
  1949.
1950. Layla takes the handkerchief and sobs into it.
  1951.
  1952. LAYLA
1953. He was going to be a dad, Officer
  1954. Parks.
  1955.
  1956. PARKS
  1957. Dave. Just, Dave.
  1958.
1959. She sits in the pews and struggles to regain her composure.
  1960.
1961. Layla struggles to say anything.
  1962.
  1963. Her phone rings.
  1964.
  1965. LAYLA
1966. Hold on, I have to take this.
  1967.
  1968. She sniffles.
  1969.
  1970. PARKS
1971. If you need anything, just ask.
  1972.
  1973. LAYLA
  1974. Thank you, Dave.
  1975.
  1976.
  1977. EXT. CHURCH - DAY
  1978.
1979. The rain comes down. Mark leans against the wall with a
  1980. cigarette in his mouth.
  1981.
  1982. MARK
  1983. I'm surprised, newly promoted
1984. detective. You don't realize the
1985. shit you've just stepped in, do
  1986. you?
  1987.
  1988. PARKS
1989. Cut the shit, what do you know?
  1990.
  1991. MARK
1992. Well Torres is dead. Someone did
1993. you a favor, my man. Seems like the
1994. responding officers can't seem to
1995. get their radios working, so they
1996. had to use their personal phones to
1997. call up the coroner. Better meet
  1998. 'em there.
  1999.
  2000. Parks's eyes widen.
  2001.
  2002. PARKS
2003. The feds got him last night.
  2004.
  2005. MARK
  2006. (mocking)
  2007. But the feds!
  2008.
  2009. He laughs at this.
  2010.
  2011. MARK (CONT’D)
2012. Oh, the guys in suits! Right!
  2013.
2014. Parks's eyes widen in anger as he walks over to Mark.
  2015.
  2016. PARKS
2017. What the fuck are you not telling
2018. me or anyone on this investigation?
2019. There's a dead cop and you want to
  2020. play Frank fucking West?
  2021.
  2022. MARK
2023. I actually look up to the guy
  2024. myself, but-
  2025.
2026. Parks gives him a death glare and gets ready to raise his arm
2027. as if to strangle him.
  2028.
  2029. MARK (CONT’D)
2030. Okay, okay, look. I'm just on the
2031. side looking to tell the truth, the
2032. facts of the matter, you don't see
  2033. that shit anymore.
  2034.
2035. Parks motions for him to go on.
  2036.
  2037. MARK (CONT’D)
2038. The truth is, there's some kind of
2039. war breaking out. You happened to
2040. be a roadblock in the middle of it.
2041. The dead guy? Guy who got his
2042. brains blown out and caused you
2043. guys to go light up that car? Step
2044. away while you can, Dave.
  2045.
2046. He shows a scar on his neck.
  2047.
  2048. MARK (CONT’D)
2049. Because I ain't built for the world
  2050. you are.
  2051.
  2052. Parks nods.
  2053.
  2054. PARKS
  2055. That's all I need.
  2056.
  2057.
  2058. INT. CHURCH - DAY
  2059.
2060. Parks walks over to Elena.
  2061.
  2062. PARKS
  2063. I need to go.
  2064.
  2065. ELENA
  2066. Dave, his wife...
  2067.
2068. Layla is in line to look into Lance's grave.
  2069.
2070. Parks takes a moment to glance at her, then glances at his
  2071. phone.
  2072.
2073. He turns away and walks out of the church.
  2074.
  2075.
  2076. EXT. CHURCH - DAY
  2077.
2078. Nelson walks up next to Parks as he steps out.
  2079.
  2080. NELSON
2081. Parks, I advise you be careful when
2082. you do things like that. IA's been
2083. up and down your case all day,
  2084. there's a chance they found
  2085. something.
  2086.
  2087. PARKS
  2088. There's always a chance.
  2089.
2090. Parks stretches out his arm and walks over to his car.
  2091.
  2092. NELSON
2093. What happened to your cast?
  2094.
  2095. PARKS
  2096. I was just lucky, I guess.
  2097.
  2098. Nelson just shrugs.
  2099.
  2100. NELSON
  2101. Alright then.
  2102.
2103. He walks out and gets into his car.
  2104.
  2105.
  2106. INT. MORGUE - DAY
  2107.
2108. Stanton waits for him in there.
  2109.
2110. Parks reads off the case file then looks down at the body.
  2111.
2112. Two gunshots to the chest and one to the head.
  2113.
  2114. STANTON
  2115. You weren't wrong.
  2116.
  2117. PARKS
  2118. About what?
  2119.
  2120. STANTON
2121. Whatever these guys are, they got
  2122. something going with 'em.
  2123.
2124. Parks looks down at the body.
  2125.
  2126. PARKS
2127. What do we got here, Vincent from
2128. Collateral coming to take what's
  2129. his?
  2130.
  2131. STANTON
  2132. Something like that.
  2133.
2134. He points to the glass.
  2135.
2136. Three rounds sit in the clear sample glass.
  2137.
2138. Parks takes a pair of forceps and looks at them.
  2139.
  2140. PARKS
  2141. That's not a handgun round.
  2142.
  2143. STANTON
2144. Not at all, we're gonna send it up
2145. to the ME, but from the looks of
  2146. it, it's probably .308.
  2147.
2148. THOMAS SCOTT, (mid-50s) runs his scalpel down the man's
2149. chest. The three watch as the incision sows itself back up
  2150. slowly.
  2151.
  2152. SCOTT
2153. As you can see here, Mr. Torres has
2154. some kind of regenerative healing
  2155. ability.
  2156.
  2157. STANTON
2158. The hell kind of freaks are we
  2159. dealing with?
  2160.
2161. Parks watches as the incision closes itself.
  2162.
  2163. SCOTT
  2164. It's nothing I've ever seen
  2165. before.
  2166.
  2167. PARKS
  2168. Christ.
  2169.
  2170. SCOTT (CONT’D)
2171. The skull is interesting however.
  2172.
2173. He takes out an autopsy saw.
  2174.
2175. Stanton taps him on the shoulder and makes a motion for him
2176. to put on his glasses.
  2177.
2178. He turns on his saw and sparks begin to fly out.
  2179.
  2180. PARKS
  2181. (over saw)
  2182. IS THAT NORMAL?!
  2183.
2184. Scott turns off the saw and sets it down next to his other
  2185. tools.
  2186.
  2187. SCOTT
  2188. That's some kind of metal. I sent a
2189. sample up to forensics for
2190. examination, but other than tha-
  2191.
2192. The door opens and slams shut behind them.
  2193.
2194. A man MARCUS, (late-20s) and a woman, DAWN PAULSEN (early-
2195. 30s) walk into the room.
  2196.
  2197. PARKS
2198. Who the hell are you?
  2199.
2200. Marcus has an obvious grin on his face.
  2201.
  2202. MARCUS
2203. Agents Marcus Krow and Dawn
  2204. Paulsen, Department of Homeland
2205. Security, about to secure this
  2206. body.
  2207.
  2208. PARKS
2209. This body's in our custody
  2210. actually.
  2211.
2212. He bites his lip and looks over at Dawn.
  2213.
  2214. MARCUS
  2215. Oooohhh, well-
  2216.
2217. Stanton watches this in confusion.
  2218.
2219. Dawn passes a paper to Stanton.
  2220.
  2221. Stanton watches this puzzled.
  2222.
2223. He takes a look at her for a moment and just continues to
2224. watch her as he takes the paper.
  2225.
  2226. STANTON
  2227. (reading)
2228. By order of the Department of
2229. Homeland security, you are to give
2230. any details of the murder of
  2231. Officer Lance Hawkins...
  2232.
2233. His expression changes to that of anger. Stanton looks up and
2234. passes the paper back to Dawn.
  2235.
  2236. Parks's eyes widen.
  2237.
  2238. STANTON (CONT’D)
  2239. All yours then.
  2240.
  2241. PARKS
  2242. Wait, what?
  2243.
2244. Parks stands in front of the body.
  2245.
  2246. PARKS (CONT’D)
  2247. Abso fucking lutely not.
  2248.
  2249. MARCUS
  2250. You're really going to impede a
  2251. federal investigation, Officer?
  2252.
  2253. STANTON
  2254. It's detective now, actually.
  2255.
  2256. MARCUS
  2257. Well, detective!
  2258.
  2259. Marcus glances at Parks.
  2260.
  2261. MARCUS (CONT’D)
2262. I'm ordered to secure any and all
2263. evidence by any means necessary.
2264. Even if it means Miss Dawn here
2265. knocking you out and dumping you in
  2266. the desert.
  2267.
  2268. PARKS
  2269. Fuck you.
  2270.
  2271. MARCUS
2272. That's no way to speak to a federal
  2273. officer, detective.
  2274.
2275. Parks glares at Marcus, then walks out of the door in anger.
  2276.
  2277.
  2278. EXT. MORGUE - DAY
  2279.
2280. Parks bursts out of the morgue with a pack of cigarettes.
  2281.
  2282. PARKS
  2283. FUCK!
  2284.
2285. He lights one and puffs on it in anger.
  2286.
  2287. Diaz appears behind him.
  2288.
2289. He steps on a leaf. The sound causes Parks to reach for his
  2290. weapon.
  2291.
2292. With a glare, he looks at Diaz.
  2293.
  2294. PARKS (CONT’D)
2295. I take you had something to do with
2296. evidence being removed from our
  2297. jurisdiction?
  2298.
  2299. Diaz goes wide eyed.
  2300.
  2301. DIAZ
  2302. Wait. Who?
  2303.
  2304. PARKS
2305. Homeland came in with some familiar
  2306. name...
  2307.
  2308. He drops his cigarette.
  2309.
  2310. PARKS (CONT’D)
  2311. Dawn... Don... Paulsen.
  2312.
  2313. DIAZ
2314. Doc had something to do with this?
  2315.
  2316. PARKS
  2317. That's where I've heard that
  2318. fucking name.
  2319.
2320. Parks takes out his phone and thumbs through the contacts.
  2321.
  2322. DIAZ
  2323. Hey, whatever you're doing, I want
  2324. in on too.
  2325.
  2326. PARKS
  2327. No, you don't.
  2328.
  2329. DIAZ
2330. Even if I have information relating
2331. to his death that you may very well
  2332. need?
  2333.
2334. Parks stops his thumb on James's contact.
  2335.
  2336. DIAZ (CONT’D)
2337. This goes both ways you know.
  2338.
2339. Parks just looks at Diaz dead in the eyes.
  2340.
  2341. DIAZ (CONT’D)
2342. Give me your contact card.
  2343.
2344. Parks puts his phone in his pocket. He takes out his wallet
2345. and passes him his contact card.
  2346.
  2347. PARKS
2348. Email me everything you have. Until
2349. then, I have to make a phone call
  2350. to a friend.
  2351.
  2352. Diaz nods.
  2353.
2354. A van pulls out of a gate at the morgue.
  2355.
2356. Marcus sits in the driver's seat, Dawn right next to him.
  2357.
  2358. Parks goes back inside
  2359.
  2360.
  2361. INT. MORGUE - DAY
  2362.
2363. Stanton stands there and massages his eyes.
  2364.
  2365. STANTON
2366. Go home Parks, we'll figure this
2367. out next week. Rest up, get someone
2368. to take a look at you, because
2369. you're not looking too good.
  2370.
  2371. Parks just nods.
  2372.
  2373. PARKS
  2374. Yes, sir.
  2375.
2376. Parks takes another sigh as he takes out his phone. He thumbs
2377. James's contact and calls him.
  2378.
  2379. PARKS (CONT’D)
  2380. (into phone)
  2381. Yo James.
  2382.
  2383. JAMES (O.S.)
  2384. What's up?

2393. You still talking to Doc these
  2394. days?
  2395.
  2396. He unlocks his car.
  2397.
  2398. JAMES (O.S.)
2399. Yeah, kind of broke contact after
2400. the whole convoy incident though.
2401. We talk here and there.
  2402.
  2403. PARKS
  2404. (into phone)
2405. Did he ever talk about having a
  2406. sister?
  2407.
  2408. JAMES (O.S.)
2409. Nah, he was a closed box when it
2410. came to family shit. Never even
  2411. talked about LA.
  2412.
2413. Parks gets into his car.

2423. really need this info in
  2424. particular.
  2425.
  2426. JAMES (O.S.)
2427. Look, I know I barely stand you
2428. when it comes to cops, but doc is a
  2429. different animal entirely. Worked
2430. with him or not, he's not going to
2431. be thrilled you're calling him in
  2432. that capacity.
  2433.
  2434. PARKS
  2435. (into phone)
  2436. Are you okay?
  2437.
  2438. JAMES (O.S.)
  2439. What?
  2440.
  2441. PARKS
  2442. (into phone)
2443. You actually said something sane,
  2444. you're right. Fuck.
  2445.
  2446. JAMES (O.S.)
2447. I'm still looking for cat girls.
  2448.
  2449. PARKS
  2450. (into phone)
2451. Alright then, talk to you later.
  2452.
