- (Note: No, this is not a real Repairman Jack novel, or even a fanmade one. This is a recollection of a dream I had where I was apparently an amalgam of myself and that character)
- So apparently this starts with me on a planet that isn't my own, and I'm not going to tell you why that didn't tip me off to this being a dream, because I'm not even sure myself.
- I was halfway between Jack and myself; I definitely felt like myself, but I was referring to myself as Jack and thinking almost identically to what his internal monologues are like in the RJ novels. It was like I'd transformed into the character for a while. I'm not sure why my mind chose to do that. Maybe because I recently finished reading "Gateways". I don't know.
- I was investigating this complex that was supposed to be abandoned, but I was told had a mother and daughter trapped in it. I did some of the usual things Jack does when breaking into someplace he doesn't belong; cased the place, checked for security and cameras, looked for every weak spot and escape route, all that. I also made a mental note that I was wearing a watch that would (somehow) let me contact a spaceship outside in case I needed to get off the world.
- I don't know why on Earth Repairman Jack would have something like that.
- After making note of some houses outside the place (don't ask...), I hopped a gate, broke into the complex and started looking around. The place was even more empty and desolate than I expected it to be. Nothing but hallways and empty rooms that occasionally had tables and chairs in them. It was like walking around a workplace that had been evacuated after a fire. There was nobody there. Not even remotely.
- Then I came upon this place with a lot of lockers. As soon as I came in, the door behind me closed and locked. I wanted to freak out, but I managed to keep myself together long enough to see a few pieces of food and drink lying around. Which struck me as odd, given how decidedly bereft of life this place had been. Somehow, I managed to piece together that a few of the lockers were unlocked and that putting each of the food and drink items into them would unlock the door. I then proceeded to do exactly that and promptly left the room at top speed.
- When I stepped out, the hallway had changed completely, and that was my clue that something -else- was wrong here.
- I should mention, this is where I started having this strange, dichotomous feeling that I was simultaneously "living" these events and reading about them from the outside. I don't know where that came from, but it left me feeling especially strange given the context. It felt like I was myself again, reading a book about Repairman Jack, who was actually me. "Reader" me was in the real world, and "Jack" me was on another planet searching a complex with no one in it.
- I also remember ("Reader" me) thinking to myself that this book had jumped the shark completely. Which to be fair, if this had been a -real- Repairman Jack novel, it most certainly would have.
- I wandered through the new halls, trying to figure out my surroundings in relation to where I -had- been. I went into doorways and searched rooms, as I had been doing...until eventually, I came upon a room with two people in it.
- These people had not been doing anything. When I opened the door, the two of them had been sitting at a table, gazing wordlessly at each other like they were locked in a staring contest. They turned to look at me, and they had the faces of people who were completely dead inside, like their bodies were just husks being controlled by some outside force. They got up from their chairs and started walking in my direction, and they said something that raised the hackles on the back of my neck. It was something like--
- ["Take the nourishment or give us your life."]
- --and they said it with no emotion or feeling at all. They kept on saying it as they walked towards me, like a mantra.
- Out of reflex, I tried to punch one of them out. If you've ever had a dream where you put all of your effort into punching somebody and it comes out weak and lifeless, well, this was nothing like that. This punch had a -lot- of energy behind it. My fist hit the man's face as hard as it's ever hit anyone.
- It didn't do a fucking thing. It was like punching a walking heavybag. I hit him with everything I had, and none of it even registered.
- That was when I started running. I bolted out of the room and ran like my life depended on it (I'm pretty sure it did), and as I fled, I remember looking back and seeing those two men walking behind me almost autonomously. At some point, I remember taking out the Semmerling LM4 Jack keeps on his person and opening fire on them, and realizing very quickly that the bullets were doing just as little as my punches did.
- And then I opened another door, and was met with three more of them. They walked towards me and said it again--
- ["Take the nourishment or give us your life."]
- --and I realized suddenly that they were talking about the food and drink from before. The same food and drink I'd locked away in lockers, just to get out of the room I was in.
- I ran out of the room, and was met with the sight of -dozens- of these people, crowding in the hallway, trying to catch me as I ran. All of them kept saying the same thing over and over again as they chased me...
- My memory goes blank here, but I do recall getting out of the complex and into its yard at some point.
- Now you might recall what I said about the watch that let me contact the spaceship. I went to use it here. I figured the others (what others?) should know the situation. Maybe they'd send someone else in to help me.
- ...Only, when I tried to use the watch, it didn't work. Something was jamming it, preventing me from reaching anyone else. Eventually, I gave up. The people were still coming, and I couldn't afford to sit still.
- At some point, I made it to one of the houses outside of the complex. I picked the lock on the door and opened it, and was immediately met with the sight of another person, this one holding a weapon and looking halfway between angry and scared. I held up my hands right away. This guy seemed normal (moreso than the others, at least), and I wasn't trying to get shot if I could help it.
- I'm pretty sure he and I had a conversation after that, but I don't remember what it was.
- There was an unusually rhythmic knock on the door after that. I was apprehensive about opening it, but given the fact that the other people didn't seem like the "knocking" type, I let that go. The other guy (I don't remember if I ever got his name) opened the door and let the person in, and who should it be but the mother I was looking for. I checked the picture of her I had just to make sure, and it was definitely her, though she looked a bit worse for wear in person. Her daughter also seemed to be elsewhere.
- After another conversation I don't remember the details of, I learned that her daughter was still in the complex somewhere and that the only reason she was staying here was so that she could find her again. I remember having an odd (albeit rational) feeling that the daughter was probably dead, or worse, but I didn't speak up about it. It wasn't a good time.
- Sometime later, some man (who I assume was one of the weird creepy fucks from before) appeared outside and tried to break into the house. Only, he didn't seem to succeed at all. He couldn't break the door down, and even the windows seemed to hold up against his attacks. I remember a whole stretch of time where I was just sitting there laughing and taunting him as he failed to get in, even openly flipping him off a few times. (Which was probably the most un-Jack thing I'd done up to that point) Eventually, he started getting angrier and angrier, likely as a result of being mocked by both the window and the man behind it.
- At this point, the dream cuts to something completely different. My mind interpreted it as being the inside of the spaceship I'd tried and failed to contact, but my perspective was that of someone watching from outside, and the visual aspect was completely different. Everything was a cartoon, and the whole sequence played out like I was watching TV. And there was this one person who I can only seem to interpret as being a friend of mine I know online. She looked like a combination of several of her online avatars (most have been anime characters), except her hair was brown and her body was reed-thin. Her mannerisms were just like those of the real person, almost to the letter, and she made many expressions that I can imagine the real person making when she types.
- If this -were- a cartoon, then she'd be the focal character for the moment. Which is odd, after experiencing the entire dream in a first-person perspective up to this point, but I digress.
- The sequence had her monitoring some things on a specific part of the ship, then walking along the decks for a while. Eventually, she realized that the ship appeared to be far emptier than usual, and that something was very wrong. She went back to check on a few more things, and then started looking into the matter.
- There's a whole sequence here that has completely lost itself to my memory. But somehow, this discover of missing crewmates led to a much later discovery that the world I was on was about to be targeted by some advanced alien race, and that I was going to die alongside everything else on that planet if I wasn't retrieved soon. The ship sent out a shuttle with her on it, to come pick me up.
- My memory fades here, again.
- At the next point I remember, I'm running through the complex again, avoiding more of those dead-eyed people and trying to find my way back out of the complex. At this point, both the other man and the mother appeared to be dead, and the daughter (from my vague recollection) seemed to have turned into some kind of creepy demonic creature that didn't die when I shot it several times. I had no reason left to be in this place, and if I wasn't able to contact the ship, I figured that I could at least get out of the complex and go into hiding somewhere.
- That feeling of being a reader outside of the story returned soon after, except now the "Reader" me was very into what was happening. I remember my "Reader" self thinking that the book had started to redeem itself by that point, and that I was curious to see how this amazing story was going to end.
- At some point, I go from the rooms and halls full of dead-minded people into a whole section full of people that were relatively normal. They were a bunch of office types, going about some sort of business, not even noticing me until I barreled right past them. It wasn't long before a few of them started reacting in alarm, but I didn't care enough to stop and talk to any of them. At this point, the whole place was dead to me, and so was everyone in it.
- After knocking aside one of the office people who tried to step in my way, I managed to burst through a door that led to the outside of the complex. And shortly after that, I saw the shuttle coming down from the sky. Needless to say, I ran straight towards it.
- Once I was on it, I saw my friend from before and a few other people who I only vaguely recognize. I told them "Get me the fuck out of here", and we proceeded to leave.
- The dream ended just as we were making it back to our ship. At some point beforehand, I was informed about the situation with the aliens, which made my already terrible mood that much worse.
- I have a strange feeling that the aliens showed up immediately after that, but I'm not sure if that's actually what happened.
