  1. Snow crunched like bones beneath his malnourished frame. it fell thick on his auburn coat like a gem standing out in the ghostly white. His head turned to see his home and the soft bitterness of winter. Fellow wolves were playing in the frosted over meadow, the glaze in his eyes marked his buzzing mind, rumbling like an earth earthquake he thought to himself about becoming leader. stress consumed his mind. He knew his father was going to choose. The hussle of the pack around him didn't break his train of thought. He was on the cusp of adulthood yet he worried like a child
  2. He felt a touch then a sudden shove. He fell in the snow. a thud was heard as the icy cold pinged throughout his body. He looked to see a white wolf blending in with the haze. Amber rings sharply looking at him with a playful glare
  3. “Blue what the heck!” Pine said getting up. Shaking himself off
  4. “Come on, Don’t be mad with me, I was just playing”
  5. “Blue, I’m, I’m not annoyed I just, I just don’t wanna play right now” his voice was somber, and quiet in nature, soft as a breeze
  6. “Come on,” He brushed snow in his face with his paw.
  7. "Alright… you better not do anything” Pine started to shovel snow in his face quick and without care
  8. Snow hit Blue's face, the blinding him, the sting in his eyes burned like a fire, causing his anger to light in turn
  9.
  10. Blue let out a growl “Don’t do that to me!” He swatted at him, claws digging into Pine's face. Mist came out as blood poured out of his cheek hitting the winter’s cold. Warm on his face as it fell out, dripping, thick and without care.
  11. “This is why don’t like playing with you,” Pine said
  12. “Ughhh, Then don’t be like that Pine, watch what you doing,” he growled again
  13. “Blue, You always get like this, Please calm down,” Pine said trying to stay civil
  14. “Alright, Don’t do it again,” He said. Then his one and half ears perked up to hear a sound, two voices annoyed with each other, rapid fire almost ready to fight
  15. “Ugh those two again come on Pine,” Blue said
  16. They ran over they the voices
  17.
  18. “Can you two please shut up?” Blue said barking at them
  19. They looked at him perplexed
  20. “Oh it's you Blue,” The wolf gave a snide glare, They looked at Pine.
  21. “Oh hey Pine! How you doing brother,” A black wolf looked at him the glaze in his eyes marked friendliness
  22. “Hey, why are you two fighting?” Pine asked his breath unbaited and breathing easy “Come on Root This guy is always fighting with you,” Pine said
  23. “I was trying to tell this guy” He looked over at him with a distasteful glare “That his hunting is all wrong,”
  24. “No it's not wrong! I told you it's better,” the wolf said
  25. “Let me explain, proper hunting planning, dad told me about it then I just refined it in my head,” Pine said going on a lengthy plan where everyone had stopped listening at that point, Other than Root.
  26. “Better than I thought Pine, thank you,” Root said “We should go hunting some time,”
  27. “Oh I don’t hunt, I’m sorry root.”
  28. “Yeah, You should thought, Dad is gonna pick somebody from the pack to be leader. You should be ready, You don’t talk to anybody,”
  29. “Alright whatever, Your brother is boring I get it Root Lets go hunt,” They said walking off
  30.
  31. “Thanks Pine, You always know what to do,” Blue said
  32. “Yeah, You’re welcome…”
  33. Pine looked off into the forest, and what it held. The winter's breeze blew on his face like an undead paw.
  34.
  35. Chapter 2:
  36. Cloudy sunlight hit Pine’s autumn colored coat, a dim tone came upon it. Blue’s golden eyes watched as he tried to hold back his cackling as he readied himself to strike like the hunter he was. Pine’s peaceful rest couldn't help but spark imagination on playful tactics. He took in a breath. Exhaling winters mist, Then, he pushed, caused him to flail falling flat like newly hunted prey, covering him in snow.
  37. “What the heck Blue,”
  38. Blue started laughing “Oh come on Pine, Just try to live a little,”
  39. “No, Blue I don’t play like that because you always get mad,” He said shaking off his coat
  40. “Dad always did say you were weak,”
  41. “Why did he say i was weak?” Pine replied
  42. “You don’t fight, You don’t do anything You just sit there; thinking,” Blue said concerned, but he spoke in a snide, sharp way like a claw to Pine’s ears
  43. “I hope so I don’t wanna be leader anyway,”
  44. “Well you better get fighting, You gotta learn Pine,” Blue said running off into the winters haze, barely visible. Pine watched the snow fall like dust particles. the hush of winter was apparent. His mind buzzed with ideas like bees. He laid back down. He thought about how maybe he is weak, But he didn’t mind. Then surprise came to Pine’s ears as he heard a voice, ruff as a jagged rock
  45. “Son i need to talk to you,” the black wolf said, he was tall and imposing to Pines meer stature
  46. “Yes, father.” Pine said politely
  47. They started to walk slowly, the snow crunched heavily under his feet. Yet pines were light
  48. “Now I understand You don’t want to be leader,” His dad replied “But I know you better than anyone, I made you after all. You come from my seed”
  49. Pine stayed quiet yet nodding
  50. “I am making you leader,” He said firm and without emotion
  51. “No, Dad, Please… I don’t wanna be,” Pine protested
  52. “Do not disrespect your father, I have taught you better then that,” His voice hit Pine’s ears like thorns
  53. “Father, Sir, Can’t Blue do it?” Pine said camly
  54. “No son, I see it in your eyes, Look at me for a second,”
  55. Pine stopped looking at him with his sharp, dark eyes; he couldn't even see the pupil. They looked right through him like the void
  56. “I see the Gleam in your eye boy, You will start your training in spring,”
  57. “Dad please, don’t make me leader,” Said with destress
  58. “You are the strongest And thought it may not seem like it, You are” He said walking away. The wind started to hit Pine’s ears and he looked ahead his father walking away into the mist
  59.
  60. Chapter 3:
  61. rays of the sun enveloped the land peering through the trees hitting the forest floor, the winter’s frost was now gone. birds sang their song pinging thought out the hush of the forest showing the first signs of life. The budding flowers were like small little pops of color giving life once more the bright pinks and red’s flourished as the trees looked down upon them
  62. A sudden yell came out of the woods causing the birds to fly the rush of flapping wings was apparent thought the quiet
  63. “Attack!” Pines father yelled
  64. “Dad, No I can’t do this…”
  65. “You must learn!” He barked orders “Now *do* it!”
  66. Pine lunged at the wolf in front of him. flailing around. The wolf stood firm. Pine nippled and bit him carelessly and without form. Pine pushed and shoved as the wolf just sat there with a blank look on his face. Pine looked at the ground upset
  67. “You can do better than that son,” Pine’s father spoke with precision “Do it again!”
  68. Pine looked at him “Dad please, I don’t want to hurt anybody,”
  69. “You will listen to me boy, Don’t test me,” He looked him sharply with discontent in his eyes
  70. “Dad I don’t wanna,”
  71. “No, You will, Do it or be punished,” He said
  72. “Dad please,” Pine shuttered
  73. A sudden slap came to Pines face as His eyes widened as his father looked at him “Next time with be worst son,” He said walking away “You will be leader,”
  74.
  75. Blue ran up to him, looking at him with a disdainful glare. “You’re father knows your weak, I do too,”
  76. “I really don’t want to be leader Blue, I tried to tell him…” Pine replied
  77. “No, Pine I’m gonna teach you how to be a hunter, and how to be strong,” Blue looked at him with anger in his eyes “And maybe you’ll be less of a bumbling idiot,” he growled
  78. “Follow me,” Blue said
  79. Pine trailed along with him into the woods
  80.
  81. Part 2:
  82. Snow fell, the winter's breeze was like a sharp knife on their noses, they looked ahead at the empty plain. Blue's amber eyes looked at his father’s just as white as him.
  83. “Pine never wants to play, or hunt.” Blue whispered
  84. “That little spoiled rat isn’t strong like you,” His father replied “He’s weak, You’ll be leader,”
  85. “I know dad, I try to make him stronger but he just isn’t”
  86. “I taught you well, You should try to get that confused leader of his father to make you leader,” He whispered
  87. Blues ears perked up as he saw a rabbit, his warm brown coat stood out among the snow. He readied himself to strike looking at his father.
  88. “Go,” He said quietly
  89. He ran through the snow kicking it up as he ran, straightforward and to the point. He was quick as his eyes locked with the rabbits. The rabbit tried to run but it was too late as he readied himself to bite its neck. The rabbit kicked, hitting blue in the muzzle, panging thought out like little thorns causing him to flail around in the snow huffing in anger as the rabbit ran
  90. “Son, I thought you better than to let some rabbit get away from you!” He growled at him “I’ll teach you a lesson in hunting” His father's pouncing on top of him confused blue as they thrashed. The two trying to switch between prey and predator knowing one would come on top. Blue felt teeth on his left ear, His father chewed and nippled like it was meat until it ripped off. Letting out a yelp echoing throughout the forest like a part of his soul was lost Blood spilled on the ground causing it to become an eerie crimson. His father spit out his ear, hitting the snow. Blood running down Blue’s left eye blinding him.
  91. “You better be the hunter before you become the prey,” He said
  92. Blue looked at him, nodding as the winter breeze hit his fresh wound.
  93.
  94. Part 3:
  95. Pine looked at Blue as he walked in front thinking of what he was gonna do. Blue’s walk was proud and with a stomp. quick and ready to go with a pep in his step.
  96. “Pine, Why didn’t you just hunt when you were young, You sat there doing nothing. Because of course you did, Your father spoiled you.”
  97. “Dad didn’t spoil me…”
  98. “He did, You gotta face that honestly. I gotta teach you, to allow you to play catch up, because you're an idiot and you didn’t do what you were supposed to,” He spoke in a gentle voice. worried but standoffish
  99. “Blue, He never should have made me leader,”
  100. “Honestly, Pine you're pretty smart, I don’t care, dad does. I care about you though Pine, You're just unsuited to be a leader, but I can make you one.” Blues voice counted its tone.
  101. “Alright, Blue,”
  102. They got to the plain. The spring air was clear on their noses, flowers crisp as they huffed with baited breath. they watched the trees move with the cool wind, the noise from them was apparent as no other sound was heard
  103. “Now stay quiet Pine, And wait, You hear me?” He growled
  104. They watched as seconds turned to minutes then hours.
  105. “Now Pine, You gotta run fast and strike cleanly,” he whispered
  106. “No you should sneak on them, It gives you an easier kill,”
  107. “Pine, Just do it my way its effective you don’t know anything,” he grumbled
  108. They watched a rabbit hob along the Plain, The grass was short, just starting to grow so it stood out like the prey that it was.
  109. “Now watch, Alright,” He started to run at the speed of lighting. Quick and athletic, His white coat stood out among newly found life yet the rabbit did not notice. Pine watched with fear in his eyes. Then Blue attacked its neck, ribbing it clean open like meat with no care for its life. Blood dripped down his face as the once green clover turned a sickly red.
  110. “See dad taught me that one!” Blue said with great joy in his voice
  111. “I don’t really Like that blue,”
  112. “Come on you eat this stuff all the time, What are you talking about…”
  113. “I don’t know just watching it die like that its... “
  114. “Pine, You eat stuff like this all the time. Come on you’re pretty weak if you can’t handle a kill,” Blue looked at him confused
  115. “I don’t know, I just… I don’t wanna do that,”
  116. “At Least my dad didn’t spoil me with things I didn’t kill my self,”
  117. “Alright Blue,”
  118. “Lets go, You gotta be stronger, Your pretty dang weak for an adult wolf,” Blue growled
  119. Pine looked at the rabbits dead body in his mouth, disheartment in his eyes.
  120.
  121. Chapter 4:
  122. Hazel eyes looked sharp at the wolf ahead, fear spelled Pine’s mind as he readed himself to attack. Every second he looked his heart thumped like a thunderstorm and then some. He readied himself to strike. his technique was without nuance, Yet he still tackled him knocking him down.
  123. The big wolf looked at him “Good Job Pine, You’re getting better”
  124. “Yeah…” Pine nodded as he looked at his father he nodded slowly looking right thought him
  125. “That's enough for today,” His father said then walking away
  126. Pine went back to thinking as he heard the cicada sing its song and the summer sun shine down upon him. He thought about his father’s violent way’s and how he’s becoming more violent as his training goes on. it scared him like no other. He couldn't help but feel he was becoming more corrupted with each session. Until he heard a loud panting come from behind him he looked with his soft glare, yet there was a dash of fear as he saw it. Blue’s once pristine snow colored maw covered in blood.
  127. “Pine, You gotta see what happened” He said in a panic
  128. “What happened Blue, is everything ok?”
  129. “No not at all, But I can’t say it in front of the pack, I need your help Pine,” His golden eyes shook, the spark in them was gone, they seemed to be in a haze.
  130. Pine ran behind Blue as he then saw it. Pine gasped. Blue’s father lay there as his neck had been torn to shreds. The blood on the long wheatgrass was like a haunted ruby, a cursed color that pine will never forget. His eyes locked with Blue’s father's amber eyes open and unblinking life sucked out of them frozen in time.
  131. “Blue, What did you do!?” Pine yelled
  132. “Dad and I we’re fighting, and I overreacted and, and, and,”
  133. “Blue, It's ok, Just give me a second on what we should do, Alright,” Pine said trying to stay calm.
  134. “Ok, Ok, I trust you,” Blue said, his voice shaking.
  135. Pine thought for a moment looking at Pine with discomfort in his eyes knowing his friend was a murderer, He couldn't make a choice, many things rushed through his head, hiding the body, just telling nobody. Pine sighed knowing his father would have the answers
  136. “I’m gonna tell dad Ok? Things are gonna be alright, Just try to take your mind off of it”
  137. Blue started to sob, looking at Pine with baited eyes. “Are you sure?”
  138. “Yes i’m sure,”
  139. Pine started to run to tell his father, He looked at him trying to remain civil and polite
  140. “Father, Blue… Murdered someone,”
  141. “Whom?” He said calmly
  142. “His father,”
  143. His father nodded “Let me see him,” His voice was unnerving due to its peacefulness
  144. Pine ran over and got him
  145. “Sir, I didn’t mean too, he was attacking me back, I really didn’t, I just,” Blue’s voice shuttered in woe
  146. His father nodded listening along
  147. “I know, I made a mistake, but he was going to kill me,” Blue said
  148. “No more, Go, you’re exiled,” His voice was stern, unmoving.
  149. Blue started crying “Please, No, I know it was self defense.”
  150. “I don’t care, Your a danger to the pack,” The leader said, “Go before I make you,”
  151. Blue looked at Pine with an unrelenting glare, growling at him “I hope you’re happy,” he said walking out.
  152. Pine watched as he walked, confusion and sadness in his eyes.
  153.
  154. Chapter 5:
  155. Autumn's weak breeze glazed past his coat. It blended in with the brown and orange hues of the woods around him. He led the wolves down the trail. He looked ahead and behind him.
  156. “Father, Why do I have to lead the pack?” Pine asked
  157. “Son, I thought you learned to do your duty and not ask questions,” He said calmly “You know this is your right of passage” He said
  158. Pine looked ahead lost in thought glazed eyes marked another day of aimless wandering of the mind. He heard sounds come from the dying brush. He looked and he froze. It was him, amber eyes and all.
  159. “I found you!” Blue said angry
  160. “Blue, Are you ok?” Pine asked. Blues once pristine snowy coat was covered in grim, he looked rough as a freshly killed animal. His fur like thorns and his coat ragged
  161. “No, You were a little tattle tale, And you tried to get rid of me so you could become leader!” Blue yelled at
  162. Pine looked at his father slowly. His eyes asked for help. His father looked at him shaking his head
  163. “Blue, Calm down ok?” Pines voice shook
  164. “No!” Blue lunged at Pine causing him to hit the ground panging his head as he hit the muddy floor.
  165. “Blue I don’t wanna hurt you,” Pine said trying to remain calm
  166. “Why don’t you, If I'm a ‘danger to the pack’” He said looking right through Pine “I know you better than anyone. I was suppose to be your guide, your helper And you abandoned me and told everybody”
  167. “Blue, I don’t know, I don’t know”
  168. “Of course you don’t,” He said striking again right for the neck Pine stopped him and threw him to the ground Pining him Blue struggled and thrashed in his paws
  169. “Pine, You were my friend… You’re all I had,” Blue started to sob repeatedly it seemed to never end. He strikes back, freeing himself from the lock of Pines' paws, Pine not thinking, digged into his neck, sharp and the taste of blood flowed thought his mouth as his life force drained. Pine stopped for a moment looking at what he had just done as death
  170. poured out of him as he yelped for breath
  171. “I love you,” Blue said looking at Pine as his amber eyes remained open forever more
  172. Pine started to cry as he felt the autumn breeze hit his newly mounted visage.
  173. He looked at the pack gasping, and then his father who nodded saying
  174. “Lets go, You’ve done good,” his father replied
  175.
  176. The end:
  177. “Father, was I in the right?” Pine asked
  178. “With what son?” His father replied
  179. “I don’t know, It just doesn’t sit right,”
  180. “Well it's time to become leader, go out there and be something great,”
  181. Pine looked ahead as the pack was cheering his name
  182. He was ready for his next mission.
