- Frank Darrbo is a hapless fry cook. When his wife Sarah falls off the wagon and dumps him for Jacques, a drug dealer, Frank tries to get her back by reporting her kidnapped, grabbing her from Jacques' car, and wailing for her to return. After watching Christian TV and having a vision, he becomes a superhero to fight evil. He sews a costume, finds a weapon (a pipe wrench) and looks for crimes to stop. He has problems: his wrench inflicts real injury, so the cops want him for being a vigilante, his sense of boundaries is flawed, and Jacques' gang has guns. Libby, a clerk at a comic book store, becomes his sidekick, and it's time to go save Sarah. What chance do they have?
- After his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, but lacking in heroic skills.
- It is hard to rate independent/alternative films, because although I'd give this one a 10/10, it would seem unfair to put it beside movie classics. On the other hand, I totally enjoyed every second of it. The story is both bizarre and great, Rainn Wilson delivers a strangely adorable performance, and the film as a whole is original and brilliant. A cult film and definitely one of my all time favorites.
- This is the best superhero film I've ever seen, and it's a genre I enjoy a lot.<br/><br/>The film is funny, exceptionally sad, incredibly violent and manages to be both simple and complex.<br/><br/>Superficially, it has similarities to kick ass, of course, but it beats that film into a cocked hat. Whereas kick ass was entertaining enough, it did turn into what it parodied to a certain extent - SUPER doesn't waver in its commitment to finish what it started, and the effect is mind blowingly good. It's one of those things where the low rotten tomatoes score isn't because the film is average, it's because not everyone has the brains or stomach to process a film that has this amount of respect for its audience.<br/><br/>I won't even say any more about it - just go see it. And if you've nicked it off the internet, buy or pay for it when you can in some form. Gunn and the cast deserve every penny.
- Ultimately the movie ridicules the culture that compels what Cedric the Entertainer calls grown-ass men to dress up like comic-book characters, as well as the Christian attempts to co-opt that culture.
