Professor Tabata’s group arrived. The assistant holding the Geiger
counter was leading the way, following the footsteps. Professor Yamane,
Shinkichi, and the others were still looking up, puzzled by the exposed
earth on the rocky precipice.
The assistant turned pale and shouted, “Professor! Watch out! Inside the
indentations, the radiation’s strongest!”
“What? Radiation in the footsteps? . . .” The surprise was visible in his
face and from the perplexed way he tilted his head.
The assistant warned the villagers who had followed them, “Everyone,
please don’t come any closer. It’s dangerous!”
“Did you hear that? Everyone go home. They said it’s dangerous to get
close . . .” The mayor and the other important villagers chased away the
women and children, then immediately roped off the area.
