MM10 2022 Tournament Disqualification Explanation

Tonight we removed someone from the Mega Man 10 tournament due to an inappropriate profile bio.

The profile in question had the text “:warning: This user is a registered sex offender. Learn more about Discord's new safety policy at https://discord.com/guidelines “

A quick google search shows this has been posted by multiple people, and is not actually an official notification from Discord.

“Jokes” and memes that mock the seriousness of sexual assault have no place in the community. Many of us, including multiple tournament entrants and admins, were disturbed by this once it was brought to the mods’ attention. For the many people that know someone who was sexually assaulted, this was an unwelcome reminder that some on the internet think it’s worth mocking.

Even with this being something multiple people on the internet have done, many people were completely unaware this was the case, and had no context for why someone would think proudly declaring themselves an offender would be funny.

Ultimately the duty of community moderators is to ensure a safe space for everyone, free from harassment and the idea that horrible things can be “just a joke.”

The runner has been removed from the tournament. We have asked them in question to remove this from their profile and use better judgment when following along with “trends” if they wish to enter future events.

It is important the effect that serious issues, including sexual assault, can have on our friends. Please think before making light of these issues, and quite frankly, don’t do it.

As always, if you see something disturbing going on, please bring it to the community moderators so we can address it properly.
