47. During the Napoleonic Wars, a British frigate, HMS Surprise, and a much larger French warship, the Acheron, with greater fire power, stalk each other off of the coast of South America. Russell Crowe brings great intensity to the role of Captain Jack Aubrey. Lucky Jack, as he is referred to by his crew, is well regarded by his men, who trust him implicitly, even after the first devastating battle and an apparent personal vendetta against the French captain. While the naval battle sequences are quite fantastic, the film is successful because director Weir chose to build the story to get to know the men who are locked aboard the tight quarters of a small ship and how they interact everyday. The officers and the mates are well-known by the time the final battle comes. Paul Bettany offers a strong performance as the surgeon and naturalist who balances the violence of his chosen life with the quiet demeanor of the scientist. He is the captain's friend and confidant, the two frequently playing violin and cello duets together. The horrors of the injuries from the war are frequently implied, but vividly depicted in the reactions of the characters.
48. The year is 1805. Europe has fallen to Napoleon, and only the Royal Navy stands in his way to total victory. Off the cost of South America, a new conflict is brewing. Captain Jack "Lucky Jack" Aubrey of the Man-of-War HMS Surprise is under orders to sink or capture the French privateer Acheron, which has been deployed to the region. After seven weeks of uneventful sailing, the Acheron strikes first, all but crippling the Surprise in an engagement in which Aubrey realizes his enemy's ship is nautically superior to his own. Along with his close friend and confidant Stephan Maturin who also happens to be the ship's surgeon, Aubrey is now faced with the choice of retreating to England and admitting defeat or remaining at the Acheron's mercy. Aubrey must now do the impossible if he is to survive, repair his ship, catch up to his enemy and defeat the Acheron--somehow.
49. Russell Crowe,(Capt. Jack Aubrey), gave an outstanding performance as a Captain of the very old "Tall Ships" era and their mighty sails and rough and tough crew members. This is a very realistic picture and full of adventure, as Jack Aubrey is chased by a French vessel and almost completely wiped out at sea and then proceeds to fight back at very bad odds. There are young men (boy's) a board serving as Cabin assistants and a very smart lad who enjoyed biology and samples of living creatures when ever they found the time to land. There is lots of action and not one woman aboard, however, the Captain did spot a very sexy and attractive gal along side the boat and you could almost read his thoughts. Great look back in History and the rough and tough life of being a sailor in the British Navy.
50. Don't miss the "Making Of" for this film if you have or rent the two-disk DVD set. They bought one ship and made a second one from scratch to make this movie! Weir the director stated his intent to make the movie achieve the above Summarized goal. For my money he succeeded. Ten out of Ten for this one. The use of early music played by the Captain and the Doctor to bring in the civilized nature of both men was brilliant, and Mr Crowe studied the violin enough to be able to accurately act the playing, and the above clips include some of his actual playing. He had never touched the instrument before, likewise his co-star on the cello. There are only a few movies in this category, perhaps A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS is comparable, and I viewed it twice on successive nights. It has so much truly authentic detail and depth of action that it could be profitably viewed monthly for a year. UNMISSABLE. And I had never heard of it before late 2009.
51. For those with any interest in 18th and 19th century seafaring or naval warfare, this is a must-see motion picture. For others, it's an enlightening and entertaining experience.
52. And, as the French physician (a warrant officer position), would not be kept in the hold or below decks like normal crew, but allowed comparably free reign of the Acheron, enabling him to engineer a means for his crew to escape their quarters (such as unbolting hatches and removing guards posted, soaking guns etc.) and/or hinder any attempts of resistance made by the unfortunate prize crew through distraction, violence or subterfuge.

Aubrey therefore decides that HMS Surprise will have to change course and escort Acheron. But Aubrey doesn't really seem to be very concerned. In fact it seems that he is taking this course of action only as a precaution and, in any event, we see that the Acheron is only about three miles away are unlikely to have been retaken yet.

Another point to note is that Valparaiso in 1805 was Spanish territory and Spain was at war with Great Britain, meaning that it was not a place to which a prize could be taken and refitted as suggested. Nobody knows. Though the main asset, the ship, is still available, 20th Century Fox sold it to the Maritime Museum of San Diego in 2007. There have been tons of rumours, but nothing tangible. He plays the part of Barret Bonden, the captains coxswain, and spends a lot of his time at the helm or fighting alongside Jack in battle. In the books he is a large, bruising prize-fighter with many battle scars. You may feel that a5c7b9f00b
