Relationships with other characters

Grey: Elly feels safe when she's around Grey. She considers Grey to be supremely capable and intelligent, to the point that she probably overestimates him. She also views him as a good and moral person. He is one of the first people she goes to when she wants advice or help with a difficult task. Elly confides secrets in Grey that she doesn't confide in anyone else, such as the fact that her faith has begun to waver. Because Elly is so innocent and naive, she sometimes unwittingly makes innuendos or otherwise goes a little "TMI" when speaking with Grey in private, making Grey feel awkward -- to say the least.

Naomi: Elly's relationship with Naomi is probably the most complex relationship in the game not involving Grey. In many ways, Elly sees Naomi like an older sister, and looks to her for guidance. She is of course dismayed by Naomi's lack of faith, and the conflict between Elly's Catholicism and Naomi's atheism forms one of the main philosophical themes in the game. Yet the longer that Elly is around Naomi, the more tempted she is to stray from her original prudishness. Though the player can access story paths where either Naomi or Elly falls in love with Grey, the "canon" love story is between Elly and Naomi. In Sara's path, and perhaps in some other storylines, there will be hints that Elly and Naomi have developed a tumultuous lesbian relationship.

Sara: Elly likes Sara. Their relationship is much less passionate, and a little bit more stereotypically sister-like, than Elly's relationship with Naomi is. Elly feels bad for the way that Sara and Grey's romance has soured, and she wants to see them reconcile -- going so far as to try her hand at playing diplomat between them. Since Sara, like Elly, has rudimentary knowledge of first aid, Elly often asks Sara's help in dealing with critical injuries. Even though Elly knows much more about treating the sick and injured than Sara does, Elly wilts at the sight of blood, and Sara's presence helps her deal with cases of extreme trauma.

Bro: Bro's humor flies straight over Elly's head 90% of the time, and she often takes his sarcasm seriously. She's vaguely aware of when he mocks her, but she still struggles to understand him. Elly likes Bro a lot, she respects his survival skills, but his blatant disregard for religious mores and his irreverent attitude in general make him an enigmatic figure to her. As with Naomi's influence, Bro's presence serves as a temptation to Elly to be less prudish (Bro, in fact, doesn't hesitate to outright tell Elly that she should be less of a prude).

Maya: When Elly first learns about Maya's existence, and how Maya is living at Naomi's apartment, she intuitively senses that Maya has lost her family. Elly is sympathetic to her because of this, and it is Elly's influence that ultimately convinces Naomi to let Maya continue to live in her apartment. Storylines where Elly meets Maya in person are rare, because Maya usually never visits the church. In Maya's path, though, Maya does live at the church for a brief time, and Elly also tends to Maya's injuries at the end of the game, so there is some interaction between the two. Elly is friendly and cheerful in these interactions, especially because she knows how much Maya means to Grey. When Grey and Bro bury Maya's family, it is Elly who delivers their last rites.

Jun: Elly takes Jun's coldness as a sign of animosity or disapproval, and is disheartened by it. I struggle to think of a storyline where they would have an extended interaction, though, so it's likely that they'd never develop a very nuanced relationship.

Pre Z-Day

Elly was abandoned as an infant on the steps of a church. The priest there, Father de Laurent, dutifully turned her over to child protective services. However, he felt like he saw something in her, and he took to visiting her as often as possible while she was bounced around the foster system. At the age of 11, having not yet been adopted, Elly decided to become a nun serving under Father de Laurent. As a mark of their unusually close relationship, Elly took his last name, though she isn't officially his daughter in any way.

Elly's time in the convent was marked by more than a little conflict. Though Elly has always been sweet and innocent, she can also be a little stubborn or willful, and her dedication to doing what was right ahead of doing what was ordered put her at odds with her fellow sisters. She was sometimes seen as the black sheep of the convent.

Since joining the convent, Elly has attended classes at the private Catholic school near the church, free of charge. It is there that she received training in horticulture and first aid, among other things. Despite her naivete, she worked hard and did well in all her classes.


From Z-Day to Day 1

When the outbreak first occurred, Elly immediately wanted to open the church to anyone seeking refuge. However, the church elders -- including Father de Laurent himself -- refused, locking up the doors and turning people away.

The callousness of this outraged Elly. Eventually, in complete opposition to all the others, she unlocked the church doors herself and began to let the desperate survivors in. The elders, finding out too late what Elly had done, were completely unable to stop the flood of people.

Many of the elders, fearing that outsiders would deplete the church's food stocks and bring the infection with them, fled. Most of the others sequestered themselves away in the rectories, refusing to deal with the civilians at all. As a result, it fell to Elly to ration out food and try her best to control the situation. It was a losing battle, though, and things quickly began to spiral out of control -- especially when the food ran low. It is at this point that Naomi discovered the church and helped re-establish order.

Since Naomi's arrival, things have been brought back to an even keel. Naomi is in charge of defense and bringing back supplies. Elly rations food and treats the sick. This arrangement has managed to work nicely for a time, but as the game opens, things are slowly starting to come unraveled again, with people questioning the church's safety and leadership structure.
