  1. >Call it a coping mechanism or call it your natural personality of trying to rationalize the world that surrounded you, it didn’t matter: your mind was doing its best to come up with a ground based explanation to what was going on.
  2. >After all, despite everything you have seen in short stay in Equestria, despite knowing that the sun and the moon do not work based on the laws of gravity but instead in this strange world they had to be manipulated by the goddesses that you have grown to call mothers
  3. >It was because you simply couldn’t accept as truth that Luna, YOUR Luna transformed into this monster. Not because you can’t accept the drastically physical change that would make any biologist go insane or the sudden solar eclipse that not even the NASA could have predicted
  4. >But rather because it seemed beyond the realm of the possible that the kindest being you have ever met could transform into this beast.
  5. >No, this is a dream after all! And from your side studies during the bachelor and from conversations with colleagues you knew that dreams didn’t always have a literal meaning.
  6. >Under this logic, Nightmare Moon then wasn’t a literal monster nor a real life devil, she was something more subtle… a demon yes, but not in the literal sense of the word.
  7. >You can logically conclude that this thing is the very exact opposite of Luna’s personality. You remember reading some psychology books that fits this situation in a certain way.
  8. >Freud and especially Jung named this state of mind a “shadow:” A negative aspect of our personality which we subconsciously reject and choose to ignore, emerging just in cases of massive stress and/or anxiety.
  9. >Less of psychology but also related to what you were seeing was the most well-known work of Herman Hesse: The Steppenwolf describes that we have many versions of ourselves, some positive, some neutral and some negative, each one colliding with the others to win the right to dictate our dominant ideology and personality
  10. >Of course your scientific nature didn’t allow you to discard the other possibilities without any kind of substantial proof. But the sad reality is that the mere chance that those other scenarios are real made your heart sink into an infinite pool of despair.
  11. >And of course to back up those scenarios was the intrinsic nature of Equestria: This was a world filled with magic and wonders which no human could believe as possible… and yet you have seen so much that defied centuries, nay millennia of scientific knowledge.
  12. >And if the possibility that Nightmare Moon WAS a real being rather than the allegory of Luna’s inner demons then the questions here are not what conflict is Nightmare Moon supposed to be an allegory of
  13. >They are rather more in the line of: what caused such physical change? What pushed her to this state? Is Nightmare Moon a different being than Luna? What made her change back from this demon to the kind and loving creature that you know and love?
  14. >”AHAHAHAHAHAH what is the matter? Cat got your tongue?” The mare known as Nightmare Moon was looking at you with a sense of superiority and despotism… or more like the spot where you were. You had a feeling that she wasn’t actually lending any attention to you, but then again, you could see nor hear anyone else.
  15. >Nightmare Moon narrows her eyes and smirks for a moment, before laughing again ”What happened to all of those lies you used to tell me, just so I would ignore the fact that you loved basking in endless love and attention while I was left to rot by everypony?!. What happened to those fake words of comfort that you used to spout out of your filthy mouth?! Tell me, my dear sister, what happened to all of your hypocrisy?!”
  16. >Dear sister? What was she talking about? The only ones that were in the room was you and Nightmare Moon… unless…
  17. >”Luna! Snap out of it please! I don’t know what happened to you, but I swear that I will fix you!” And just like clockwork Celestia comes out from the shadows, you weren’t sure why you didn’t see her before. But then again this was a dream. A magical dream, and the fact that this illusion was possible here, only served to increase the possibility that your worse fears were real.
  18. >”Fix me? … FIX ME?!” Nightmare Moon stomps her hooves on the grounds causing another small quake, the hatred in her eyes continuingly rising by the minute “No, nonononononono! You seem to get it wrong… which is not really surprising coming from you.
  19. >Nightmare Moon points to her chest and angrily taps it “There’s nothing to fix inside my heart! What you see are my true feelings about you, about EVERYPONY! I am tired of being ignored, I am tired of being unloved just because you decided to steal those things from me!”
  20. >Both you and Celestia were in shock about this, maybe for different reasons since you didn’t know the full story, but one thing was certain… None of you expected Luna to become this “Sister, I would never do such horrible things, please listen to me!”
  21. >You could see some tears running down Celestia’s cheek “I love you, with all my heart! You are my everything, Luna! You are the only family I have left, the only pony I can call a close friend… How can you say such awful things? This monster is not you… this is not my little sister”
  22. >”ENOUGH!” Nightmare Moon stomps her hooves again, this time making the shadows expand all across the sky, making the moon engulf the sun into a massive ball of darkness “The Night shall last forever! And there’s nothing that you or anypony can do to stop it!”
  23. >”LUNA!” Celestia yells but her pleads are quickly shunned off by a barrage of magical blasts coming at her direction.
  24. >Celestia dodges them without too much effort, but you…
  25. “Oh no! Oh Nooooo!”
  26. >One of those blasts hits you… or more like hits the spot where you were standing. Because when you open your eyes you see a fairly big sized crater around you… but you were unharmed
  27. >You close your eyes and slap your forehead. Of course! This is was just a dream after all, or an actual memory, so there wasn’t an actual physical threat that could harm you.
  28. >”AHAHAHAHAHA” Nightmare Moon cackles before lifting off, Celestia immediately follows her leaving you all alone
  29. >They say that a cut to the heart hurts more than a thousand knifes on the back. This was a memory, a real memory, not just an allegory but rather a historical fact that stated that Luna, your loving mother, transformed into a monster that wanted to engulf the world in darkness.
  30. >You feel some tears running down your cheeks and your legs becoming weaker
  31. “Why… I just don’t understand”
  32. >You cover your ears and close your eyes to try to ignore the raging battle that was happening in the skies. To try to ignore the fact that your mothers were seemingly fighting to the death for reasons you couldn’t understand
  33. >Your mind was a hurricane of questions, but the one that dominated the most, the question that you wanted to know the answer with so much desperation was:
  34. “WHY!”
  35. >Similar to a wish conceded by the genie of the lamp, a door appears seemingly out of nowhere in the middle of the now destroyed throne room, it was almost as if this was an answer that was sent by the heavens.
  36. >You inspect the door; it certainly felt stupid to think that it could lead to somewhere else, to the answer that you desperately wanted to know. But you also looked at the battle that was raging… the thought of Luna and Celestia fighting like this… You wanted to be anywhere except from here.
  37. >You push the door and it opens without too much effort. And lo and behold it actually led to somewhere else, it was a balcony. You supposed that it belonged to this old castle. But even if you were wrong, you didn’t care.
  38. >You take last look at the battle and walk through the door. You end up indeed in a balcony; the sight was of a fairly old town surrounded by a massive forest.
  39. >In fact town was stretching it too much. The houses were a little more than huts, with the only respectable structures being a Greek styled structure in the middle of the town and of course the castle itself.
  40. >”Hehehehe let’s do it again Tia! Pleaaaase?” That was a filly voice, way younger than the ones of your classmates or… errm, your new girlfriend.
  41. >”Okay, Okay! But only if you promise to eat all of your veggies” This voice while still squeaky, it was much more akin to a filly of your age.
  42. >You turn around; looking for the source of those voices and what you find is something that melt your heart, making you forget for a moment the horrible scene that you just witnessed.
  43. >It was Luna and Celestia, when they were young, waaaay young. Luna was definitely younger than you while you would venture to say that Celestia was a little older than your current age.
  44. >What was funny, at least for you, was the fact that it seems that Celestia didn’t lie when you went to the Canterlot market with her: They weren’t born alicorns, they were initially unicorns, and their manes had a different form than the crazy style that they have in the present.
  45. >Celestia’s height was just like a normal filly; her coat was still as white as the purest snow, but her mane instead of flowing at all times and being rainbow colored was instead of a pink color with some cute sparks on it and she was rocking an adorable pony tail.
  46. >Luna in turn was so freaking adorable, her coat wasn’t the deep navy blue that you were familiar with; instead it was a paler tone of the same color. Her mane also didn’t display the night sky nor was it flowing. It was short and borderline cyan. And she was the most adorable thing you have ever seen.
  47. >In fact the both of them were sickeningly cute, and you had to admit that you preferred way more these forms than they ones that you knew them of. Not because there was nothing wrong with their looks, far from it.
  48. >It was actually because now that you have seen their true form, there was something that made them superior in your mind, a certain air of authenticity and pureness. You wanted to see Luna and Celestia for what their hearts truly want them to be, not because a title dictates how they should look.
  49. >”Awww all of them?” The little Luna asks her sister with disappointment
  50. >Celestia gives her a stern look and nods “Yes, all of them! You are still a filly in development, so you must eat all your veggies if you want to grow strong and brave like me” The little Celestia’s horn starts to glow, making a little shiny ball appear above the sisters
  51. >Luna looks at this little magical feat with awe and claps “That was amazing Tia!”
  52. >Celestia chuckles to herself, making a satisfied motion with her head “I know, I’m amazing but I know that you can be just as much or even more amazing than me!”
  53. > Luna slowly taps her hooves”Y-you really think so?”
  54. >A big smirk is Celestia’s first reaction at her sister’s question “Of course I do! In fact why don’t you try using your own magic?”
  55. > The little Luna shies a little, it seems that she wasn’t as confident as Celestia “B-but-“
  56. >Celestia rolls her eyes and gives her sister a wink “Just do it, believe in me when I tell you that everything will be just fine”
  57. >Luna nods, her horn starts to glow and Celestia’s little floating ball starts to get surrounded by darkness.
  58. >You open your eye wide, expecting the worst but what happens is that a little shadow shaped as a heart comes from the now floating ball of darkness.
  59. >”I… I did it! I did it I did it I did it I did it!” Luna starts hoping from one place to the other
  60. >Celestia chuckles and hugs her sister “See? I told you that everything would be fine…”
  61. >Luna returns the hug and softly whispers “I want to be like you when I grow up”
  62. >The big sister breaks the hug and let out a small giggle “That won’t happen if you don’t finish your veggies”
  63. >”I…. You won’t catch me!” And with that Luna runs away, leaving behind just a little cloud of dust.
  64. >Celestia huffs and narrows her eyes “Luna! Come back here!” and with that she runs after her sister.
  65. >You in turn were completely charmed by the whole scene, so much in fact that you decide to follow them.
  66. >But the moment you step out of the balcony, you don’t see two fillies playfully chasing each other, but rather two fully grown, but still young looking alicorns.
  67. >And you also see an extremely nervous Luna, she was pacing back and forth ”I still don’t know how to feel about this, Tia… What if they don’t accept us? What if we are not enough to unite the three tribes?”
  68. >”Oh stop worrying so much” Celestia was reading a book, her face was displaying the same confidence that you knew her for “We won’t fail in uniting the three tribes of ponies, Equestria needs a leader that can guide everypony so we don’t do the same mistakes of the past”
  69. >”Exactly!” Luna snaps, showing how truly scared she was “They need A leader, I don’t know why I must be part of this too, you are good enough to do it alone”
  70. >Celestia sighs and closes her book, she gives Luna a disapproving look “You are really underselling you, you know that? Let me ask you this, who came with the idea of using the elements of harmony against Discord?”
  71. >Luna lets out an annoyed groan “Tia, you know that-“
  72. >But Celestia shuts her up by raising her hoof “Ah ah ah! Answer the question, dear sister”
  73. >Luna sighs “Me…”
  74. >”And who is the only pony who can bear half of the elements of harmony? “ Celestia says with a stern voice… kinda similar to when she lectures you
  75. >”Me” Luna answers, looking away from her sister.
  76. >”Excellent!” Celestia claps her hooves “Now, who is the pony who managed to create a truce between ponies and the everyfree forest? Aaaand also managed to keep the peace between pegasi and earth ponies?”
  77. >”That’s… me” Confidence was starting to show up in Luna’s face, seems like she was
  78. >Celestia walks towards her sister and places her hoof on her sister’s shoulder “See? You are a great strategist and a great leader too! I can’t do this without you Luna. The three tribes choose the two of us for a reason. And without you I’m not even half as good as when we act as a team. So relax okay? Everything will be just fine”
  79. >Three tribes? Ok wait hold on; this is not the time to think like a moron. You need to analyze what they just said.
  80. >And it seems that they were preparing for something, and it was big. Celestia and Luna were probably nominated to be the leaders of Equestria.
  81. >That either meant that they have been the kingdom rulers for a long ass time as they told you, or they literally have been ruling Equestria since its birth.
  82. >”Well my dear sister, everypony is expecting us so we should go now” Celestia changes her tone for a much more relaxed one
  83. >”Mmmhmm” Luna happily nods before giving her sister a mischievous grin “But not before you put that book in its proper place”
  84. >Celestia let out an annoyed groan and rolls her eyes as she walks to a bookshelf “Geez, recently you have become really stingy with keeping everything in order, let me tell you that it is starting to get really-AAAAAAAAAAAH!”
  85. >The moment Celestia places the book, the bookshelf spins on itself pulling Celestia into a trap. Luna flies towards the bookshelf and starts cackling “THAT WAS FOR PUTTING THAT SPIDER ON MY BREAKFAST!”
  86. >You place your hoof on a nearby chair, so you can think a little more comfortable. But for your bad lack, you activate a trap… Fucking shit, you forgot that Luna told you that the castle was plagued with these…
  87. >You were falling through a secret tunnel that led up right into…
  88. “A parade?”
  89. >The little town now covered in snow, seems like it has had a major overhaul. Instead of the huts that you saw during Luna and Celestia’s childhoof these were… ok they were still incredibly shitty, but at least they were built with actual stone and bricks.
  90. >The parade was like one of those re-enacting of a medieval carnival, colorful tents, shitty food and weirdos in horrible disguises. The only difference was that this is an actual medieval carnival… ugh, this might be a dream but you hope that you don’t get the plague.
  91. >Before you can think of a sanitary method to walk around the streets, you hear a pretty loud cheering
  92. >”…We thank you for your assistance on the 30th anniversary of the foundation of our precious kingdom, Equestria!” That was Celestia. You turn around and see her standing on a stage.
  93. >Despite your short height, you could clearly see a very happy Celestia who was wearing a flowers crown…. And Luna was behind her, looking absolutely miserable.
  94. >”Celestia!”
  95. >”Celestia!”
  96. >”Celestia!”
  97. >You start walking towards the stage while also noticing that you could phase through every single pony in the crowd… creepy, but cool. But that is not what made you curious, this was a dream, or rather a memory after all.
  98. >What made you curious was the fact that the crowd was only chanting Celestia’s name, it didn’t take a genius like yourself to realize that this might be a very good reason about why Luna didn’t seem too be in a very happy mood.
  99. >You notice that the stage had a set of stairs that were protected by some guards, there was no doubt that it was to prevent access to the general public. Of course since this was a memory, you go right through the guards and walk up the stairs.
  100. >Once you were on the stage, you walk up to Luna’s side and she looked nervous rather than miserable now that you have the opportunity to have a closer look at her. In fact, it was almost as if she was terrified of something.
  101. >Did she have stage fright? That didn’t sound too much out of the realm of possibilities, but then again she is the leader of a nation, and based on that fact, it seems implausible that she would get scared from something like that.
  102. >But even if she is or rather was scared from making public appearances, what did that have to do with the fact that she would transform later into Nightmare Moon?
  103. >You keep yourself from making any more conclusions and suppositions and let the scene unfold, in the end you needed more answers and for that you must observe these events that you were sure played a key role in Luna’s downfall.
  104. >You take a good look at Celestia and you could immediately tell that there was something about her compared to the previous memory. She was standing tall and proud and her gaze was the one of a powerful but kind leader. You could tell that despite her stern and powerful look, she was enjoying every moment, she loved shaking hooves with the farmers and merchants, kissing babies, politely but still seductively declining invitations from potential pretenders, and giving her bless to young lovers.
  105. >Meanwhile Luna was cowering in her seat, seemingly fearing the very concept of facing the crowd, even when it was clear that this wasn’t a public announcement about going to war with an unknown kingdom or an inevitable famine, this was a celebration and every single pony seemed to be enjoying themselves… And Celestia didn’t seem to take notice on the inner panic that Luna was suffering from.
  106. >After a some minutes of Celestia happily addressing the crowd, she finally comes back to the stage, making every single pony go silent. The white princess looks at the crowd and clears her throat.
  107. >”This day represents not only the birth of our nation; it is much more than that! It represents the end of centuries of meaningless conflicts between ponies! This commemorates the end of endless wars and disputes between brothers and sisters, between lovers, between friends! This day represents the true values that everypony should follow: Loyalty, Laughter, Honesty, Kindness, and Generosity! These values bring us all together in an endless bond of friendship!”
  108. >Her voice again was powerful, inspiring and kind. She truly was fit to be the ruler of a country, each word was perfect for the occasion and of course the crowd thought the same thing since they explode into a big roar when Celestia finishes her speech.
  109. >Celestia holds her hoof one more time, and just like last time, the crowd goes silent. Her face suddenly changes for a kinder one “And to continue with the celebrations, my sister and co-ruler of Equestria, Princess Luna has an spectacle that will I’m sure everypony will be delighted with!”
  110. >The ponies start murmuring and whispering to them, the atmosphere suddenly had changed from one of celebration to a very thick and tense one. But, why? This made no sense…
  111. >Celestia motions to her sister to come over and do whatever she had prepared. Luna reluctantly complies as she flies towards where the white alicorn was standing.
  112. >”Sister, I don’t know if this was such a good idea. What if they react like all the other times?” Luna nervously whispers to Celestia’s ear
  113. >Celestia pats Luna’s head and offers her a comforting smile “Nonsense Luna, they will love it! Don’t worry about anything, since everything will be just fine”
  114. >Luna doesn’t say anything; she stares off to the distance. Her horn begins to glow and she starts to fly upwards, making the moon rise in the sky, making the day end and bringing in one of the most beautiful night skies you have ever seen.
  115. “Woah”
  116. >That’s the only word you can muster, the sky was filled with stars and the moon… you have traveled to many countries but yet you have never seen such spectacle, the satellite was in its cenit, shining beautifully and blessing everything with its pale light as it slowly rose up in the sky.
  117. >When you finally stop gazing at the sky you turn to see the crowd and… most of them were gone or were leaving, and they were actually running away. What the hell? Why are they doing that?
  118. >”See?! I told you that everypony would leave! They hate my night, and they hate me!” Luna was crying, the disappointment was too much for her, she runs away sobbing.
  119. >”Luna, wait!” Celestia tries to stop her sister, but it was already too late. The crowd had dispersed and Luna was gone, leaving the older sister alone
  120. >”Dang it!” Celestia stomps her hooves, making the stage crack under such strength. The little tremor makes you fall the stage and onto the ground
  121. >You take a look, and there was no sign of an abandoned parade, broken stage or a frustrated Celestia. Hell not even of the small town and huge castle, it was still night time, but you were in an open field. Grass and small hills could be seen everywhere.
  122. >You take a moment to think about what just happened: There was a festival to commemorate Equestria’s foundation, Luna was terrified about something. Originally you thought that it was a simple stage fright.
  123. >But the more that you analyze what happened, the more you realize that hypothesis is simply not valid. Luna raised the moon, bringing with that the night, moments after that, every single pony left in fear. Plus there’s the whole thing that Luna said about ponies hating “her night”
  124. >You already knew that Celestia symbolizes the day and Luna the night, ponies were pretty cheerful during the day but became a bunch of cowardly assholes as soon as the night arrived.
  125. >So the conclusion that you can draw here is this: At some point in history, ponies were scared of the night and subsequently of Luna. But why would they be scared of such things? This is something so stupid, so alien, that you couldn’t possibly comprehend it no matter how hard you try.
  126. >As stupid as this whole situation looked like, and as much as it made you look at those ponies as nothing more than a bunch of ignorant savages, there was a seemingly objective fact here, and it was that ponies rejecting the beautiful night sky and thus Luna were a key element for her transformation into Nightmare Moon.
