  1. Function?: The lamp works in the following way(s)
  2. There is a power button in the centre of the top panel which allows the user to manually turn the light on/off. There is a handlebar on the top, which allows for mounting and carrying, allowing the device to be portable and mountable. There is a IR receiver, which allows for a remote control to be used so the light can be accessed easier and remotely. For example, if the light is mounted high up and one couldn’t access the manual controls easily. There is also a motion or light sensor to detect motion/light for automatic utilisation of the light. On the top of the device, there is a solar panel, to accumulate solar energy into a battery so the light can be used.
  3. On the bottom there are 3 sensors.
  4.
  5. The solar panel is at the top to get the maximum solar energy to convert to electrical energy in the battery. This is because it’s where it will get the most natural light from (on top), which could help prolong battery life and also receive the most solar panel effectively. To do this I would have to find a circular solar panel part with the right size accordingly.
  6.
  7. The handlebar allows mounting options so the light can be held up and also so that the light can be portable and carried around in certain places such as the bedroom. The handlebar can also fold, allowing more capture of solar energy and also increasing the aesthetic of the device when not in use. This would be a part of the client’s need, thus, by including the handlebar I am also fulfilling the client’s needs.
  8.
  9. The power button at the top allows the user to manually turn the light on/off, this would allow the user to save battery charge so that they can use the light longer when necessary, increasing functionality and fulfilling the criterion of design.
  10.
  11. I think this design is aesthetic because it has a cylindrical shape and with no intrusive design features. This would make it suitable for the target market (a vast majority of the people above 10 years old). The product in the design is also black/dark-grey, this makes it stand out less to fulfil the design criteria.
  12.
  13. The design could be improved with ergonomic grips on the handlebar, while also keeping the mounting availability, to do this I would need the average anthropometric measurements of the hand. However, it could ruin the aesthetic of the product and hurt the symmetry.
  14.
  15. In this design, the product could be made with plastic, finished metal or painted wood.
  16.
  17. Safety has been taken into consideration by not including any sharp edges or small parts, this would allow the product to cater to a wider target market, also fulfilling the client’s needs as they require the product to be used in a household environment in which there could be children.
