  57. Eddie Murphy plays a detective with a speciality of finding lost children. He is told he is the 'Chosen one' who will find and protect the Golden Child, a Bhuddist mystic who was kidnapped by an evil sorcerer. Murphy disbelieves the mysticism but finds more and more evidence of demon worship as he investigates.

When the mystical bearer of virtue and kindness, the Golden Child, is abducted by the mysterious Sardo Numspa, the fine balance between the forces of good and evil is disturbed with unforeseen consequences. To save humanity, the beautiful Tibetan Kee Nang recruits the Los Angeles-based freelance lost children searcher, Chandler Jarrell, to find the missing boy; however, his scepticism seems to get in the way. But soon, Jarrell will realise that all that stands between the Golden Child and the powers of darkness are his expertise, his skills and his determination to save the world. Is Chandler indeed the chosen one?
  59. This was a highly original decent movie, and a brave move for all those involved. I don't care if it's not the most well put-together movie of all time, the fact that it has Eddie Murphy doing something non-formulaic, and that I don't know what will happen next, makes it a favorite of mine. I wish more movies were as imaginative as this one, rather than the same old formula for entertainment.

A private detective specializing in missing children is charged with the task of finding a special child who dark forces want to eliminate.<br/><br/>John Carpenter was originally scheduled to direct the film, but dropped out and would later direct &quot;Big Trouble in Little China&quot;, a film with similar Chinese mysticism themes (Chinese American actors Victor Wong, James Hong, and Peter Kwong appear in both films). Starring Kurt Russell, Carpenter&#39;s project was reported to have been rushed through post-production to ensure a premiere date that preceded &quot;The Golden Child&quot;.<br/><br/>I love that the two films have this history because watching &quot;Golden Child&quot; instantly makes me think of &quot;Big Trouble&quot;. For as much as they do not have in common, there just are not that many films with fantastic Chinese elements in them. At least not in American film.
  61. As in Big Trouble, there is much playing around with oriental mythic nonsense: underground caverns, magic daggers, even a trip to Tibet. But where the movie really misses a trick is its inability to reproduce the balletic splendours of martial arts. The surprise is Murphy, who relies more on his undoubted charm than on the stream of wisecracks he usually delivers.
