I ended up working all night. I may be exhausted, but I know that Dave ate at Terroni on Thursday, and really, that’s all that counts. Dave and I (mostly Dave) called it quits last week. I’m devastated. He was perfect. I was happy, and now I am bereft. After my last breakup, I vowed that I was done with men. I was unwilling to go through another heartbreak, and I was fine with being single. Dave caught me off guard; we met by coincidence, and I was taken with him from the moment we met. For a while, it was great.

- Then it got complicated, and then he and I (mostly he) decided to bail. Dave’s my age. Together, we’re carrying 109 years of emotional baggage. It was no surprise that our relationship wasn’t always dreamy. I still think he’s extraordinary. I forced myself to get out of bed the day after Dave and I (mostly Dave) just said no. There are steps that must be taken to survive a failed romance, and I mustered up enough strength to take them. I a) deleted his texts! b) Deleted his voicemails! c) Deleted his screenshots! d) Deleted his photos! e) Deleted his IMs! f) Deleted his emails! g) Threw away everything that reminded me of him except the Magic Wand, which, of course, I kept. I felt ok until that night, when I was gutted anew. Out of habit, I logged onto Facebook and reflexively loaded Dave’s page. He’d posted a story about Lucinda Williams. A few months ago, he posted her song “Right in Time,” and said it was just for me. I spent the weekend at Katie’s, who invited me to sob by the sea. I wept as I ubered to Malibu, and when I got carsick, I full-on cried because it reminded me of driving with Dave. Halfway there, I texted Katie. “Just in case I get there after sundown, will you take amazing photos? I need I’m-Fine-Without-You shots for Facebook,” I wrote. “Duh, of course,” she responded. “But I think you’ll get here in time.”
