  1. About Mock Trial
  2. Highland Mock Trial is a program for students from all grade levels to increase their college and career readiness in the legal field. Each semester, the team is assigned a court case and prepares to argue for both the Prosecution and Defense sides of the case. Members compete as attorneys, witnesses, clerks, or bailiffs, or gain experience as scribes. At the end of the semester, the team competes against other Mock Trial teams and gets scored by real judges and attorneys at the L.A. or A.V. Mock Trial Competition. Throughout the school year, members participate in fundraisers. Beginning in 2019-2020, we will be adding community outreach projects.

  4. Benefits
  5. Mock Trial requires that the student puts in both time, discipline, and intellectual effort. Unlike other programs, Mock Trial hones skills that transfer academically and into the workplace. Mock Trial students experience an improvement in their reading, writing, public speaking, and analytical abilities. They learn to collaborate on the theory of the case and the tactics for communicating it to the Jury or the Judge. Students accepted into the program, who meet attendance and grade requirements, will earn up to 10 credits for each year they participate in Mock Trial. Students can also win the Mock Trial Merit Award, a scholarship of up to $1000 for seniors with outstanding contribution and commitment to the Mock Trial Team.

  7. Team History
  8. Placing no lower than Top 3 in our District over the last seven years, Highland Mock Trial has established itself as one of the best teams in the Antelope Valley. Since July 2018, the team structure was reorganized, allowing members to specialize in their preferred role while also lowering the barrier of entry into Mock Trial. At the 2018 Los Angeles County Competition, several members won an Honorable Mention Award, with one also earning an Outstanding Performance Award.
