  1. The Elements and Nature
  2.
  3. As a young Sylvan, it is becoming quickly apparent to me how Nature and the Elements are intertwined. What strikes me the most about their relationship is how each of the Elements serves as a reminder of the power that exists within both the tame practicality and the raw unpredictability that Nature holds.
  4.
  5. Earth is a part of everything in the forest. From the dust beneath our feet all the way up to the highest leaves on the tallest trees, Earth has provided nutrients and stability for all the things that grow around us. While this Element reminds us of our own stability in Nature and the world as a whole, it also serves as a reminder of the brute force behind that calm exterior. By granting you the power to coat your skin in bark or wrap your fists in stone, you are reminded of the power of these things through the damage you do under Earth's protection. It is important to remember that the forests around us are granted this same power.
  6.
  7. It is not hard to forget the power of Fire, however. While it can do the simple, such as cooking a young adventurer's meals, it may also be harnessed to perform the complex, such as giving one the power to lash their enemies with searing flames. One thing to never let leave your mind is Fire's inherent unpredictability. While you may think you are in control, that power can quickly be taken away as flames lick at the forest and come sliding into your grove.

  9. Water is a very important force in our lives, and it is the best example of the closed circuit in which we exist. I falls from the sky, soaks into the ground, and gives to Nature, before the world gives it back and it can return to fall from the sky once again. It reminds the astute Sylvan of the fact that everything we do has consequences and that our actions, too, can come full circle. Beyond this gentle reminder, though, water's power is clear. As if raging rivers and crashing falls weren't enough, we can easily be overcome by floods or famine, both driven by Water's fickle nature to provide itself in abundance or make itself scarce.
  10.
  11. Finally, Air: the essence of Nature we literally breathe into ourselves. Without it, nothing could thrive. It's gentle motion can encourage the clam sound of rustling leaves or spread pollen to a field of flowers. However, its force is not to be forgotten. Air can damage too, as we can see when we harness it ourselves to move people around with the force of the wind. If we can harness Air and give it such power, it is important not to forget that it has that power inherently, and does not need us to unleash it.
  12.
  13. Each of the Elements have two sides to them, one of utility and another of strength. What is important is using them with respect and responsibility, and keeping in mind their interwoven link to Nature and all her power. Through an understandin gof the Elements, one can gain a greater understanding of Nature herself while gaining an appreciation for both her ability to provide and to revoke on her own terms.
