[7:30:30 PM] Ron: They scream “god hates fags”.  They delight in 9/11.  This group, the Westboro Baptist Church, travels around the country protesting at military funerals.  Their speech is filled with hate, venomous, and disturbing.  However, it is constitutional.
            In this case, the Snyder family had a son in the U.S Military.  He died in Iraq fighting for the U.S.   As he was being buried, the Westboro Baptist Church was protesting, holding signs such as “God hates fags” and “Thank god for 9/11”.   The Snyder’s son was not gay, but the Church was protesting the U.S funeral.  The Snyder’s sued the Church, and won, but the decision was overturned.

Everything the church did was entirely legal and constitutional.  The Snyders moved the route of the funeral so that they would not see the signs.  They only saw them on the news. So he had a choice to view the signs.  The church was protesting 200 yards away from the cemetery, which is the legal distance.  Technically, they did not harm the Snyder family physically.  The emotional pain does not mean anything constitutionally.  Everything they did is legal.
Now the question is what is the next step?  Should free speech be limited?  The usual example of first amendment is “shouting fire in a crowded theatre unless clear and present danger is present”
