- Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons(PC, X360, PS3)
- Story: 10/10
- It's the story of two brothers trying to save their father. they follow a rumour about a fountain of healing water that can help him.
- From one side, it's a simple story. but it's anything but an ordinary one.
- I won't spoil it to you, but I'm glad to announce that this is the second, heavily character based story I played in a short while. it's good to see they aren't extinct.
- It is a short game, but you'll still end up knowing and caring for both the brothers.
- What's more impressive is that in the whole game there isn't a single spoken or written line of dialogue.
- The characters speak, but not in any language that you (or anyone else) knows. despite that, their body language is so expressive that you won't have a problem understanding them.
- That's already two huge factors that other games should learn from.
- Gameplay: 4/5
- You need a gamepad with two joysticks for this game to work. one of the few games where the symmetric setup of the PS controller is better than Xbox's asymmetrical one.
- Each stick control one of the brothers and each trigger make each do a context sensitive action. that's it. that's all your keys.
- The developers called it a single player co-op game. It probably sounds weird to anyone who haven't played the game.. but it fits perfectly.
- It can be quite challenging at times controlling the younger brother with the right half of the controller while he's on the left side of the screen, and vice-versa.
- Normally you'd rage when the "difficulty" of a game comes from a "challenging control" but strangely enough, this isn't the case here. I'm still trying to figure out why this didn't bother me, but it didn't.
- TotalBiscuit describes it as follows (very slightly edited to put into a coherent sentence):
- Most games have to adapt to the interface technology, you build games around how the controller works. while brothers is a game perfectly suited to the controller, it takes full advantage of what the controller has to offer.
- that wasn't clear? how should I put it into words.. it's as if this is the natural state of *control* using a gamepad. everything else is a failed mimicry.
- point taken off because the puzzles can be a bit simplistic at times. enjoyable still, but not hard enough by my standards.
- Graphics:
- Nice and colourful.
- Repayability: 1 playthrough
- Well hidden events that earn you achievements.
- They are interesting, but aren't integral to the story at all.
- You can pick all of them in your first playthrough.
- Other than that, the game is linear both gameplay and story-wise.
- Length: 3 hours.
- Final Score: A-, (polarization: B+, B-)
- Recommended to everyone who wants to see something new. main selling point is the story.
- polarization for those who won't be as accepting for the new control scheme.
