  1. Script - Obesity
  2. Exordium – The introduction, opening, or hook
  3. When was the last time you measured your waist or stood on a scale? Yesterday? Last week? Last month? Maybe even last year. Or has your ego and self-satisfaction kept you away from crushing your self-esteem? Unfortunately, this the judgemental truth to our social interactions and many first impressions. The hidden reality is that our world is sliding into stark complacency about obesity and unhealthy diets. Fast food industries wrestle each other to claim our money in return for a dodgy meal that is simply fat, and sugar disguised as a “convenient” meal. The apathetic Australian population is 67% overweight and the number is rising, many chef idols beckon for change and have shown the startling statistics to humanity, yet our indifference has led Australia to be one of the six 1st world countries with an obesity rate of over 25%. For every minute that I speak 1 person is hospitalised and diagnosed with a chronic related incident which has a 90% mortality rate.
  4. Narratio – The context or background of the topic
  5. We were born into a world where child abuse, homicide, genocide, climate change, water insufficiency, domestic violence, natural disasters and the stories of disabled people make the front news to capture the attention of viewers by narrating uncontrollable acts of pure chance that have taken the lives of a very small percentage of humanity. If we turn to statistics and common sense, then the breaking news of every broadcasting channel would be health-related deaths every day of every year. We strive to be fit and maintain our body weight for reasons such as, to increase our lifespan, attract others, participate in recreational sport and to avoid exclusion from others. Many people, especially adults, think that working takes time and effort which during the working week is the last thing they will do. Most people don’t realise it but being obese or overweight is unrelated to how many push-ups you do a day, or how many miles you run to work. It comes down ultimately to how well you judge the amount of food you give your body for your daily activities. Many dieticians believe that people who move less than two kilometres a day by foot can survive with two main meals and healthy snacks, given that they require less energy than the average individual. The Earth’s gravity is enough to keep our core muscles engaged and to prevent muscle degradation over time. In saying this though, although this strategy keeps you body fat percentage normal it doesn’t increase your muscle mass.
  6. Proposito and Partitio – The claim/stance and the argument
  7. “We are regarded as a Third World country with First World living conditions “Pauline Hanson.
  8. We pride ourselves in maintaining good living conditions and a strong and reliable economy yet our death rate due to health-related problems overtakes most 3rd and 2nd countries. I believe that we don’t need to induce exercise revolution or change the way that we accept physical stereotypes or change our work schedule to burn off energy that we never needed. The industrial bread-winners of our economy don’t sympathise or grieve for the loss of life, and as humans, we blame others for falling into the trap of obesity, we blame others for their lack of self-control, we blame others for their ungratefulness and stupid diets yet we pity ourselves when it comes to our problems, our self-worth and our misjudgement. Australia needs to step back and snap out of its one-sided claims and appeals to the population and analyse the underlying problem at hand which is wailing in the gutters below our pessimistic take on life and dragging the unmoved population of Australia to an early demise.

  10. Confirmation and/or Refutatio – positive proofs and negative proofs of support Peroratio – The conclusion and call to action.
  11. As the average weight of humans gradually increases, the norm shifts with this change as well. In a survey by psych central people interviewed that were classed as obese claimed that they were only “very overweight” and only 8% of people outwardly confessed that they were obese. We can’t allow for the minds of uninformed individuals be influenced by body trends and what’s socially accepted, like puppets controlled by the social media giants that have been imposed on society. We don’t need to reform our lifestyles by we don’t need to confirm either. According to cosmopolitan, the average 155-pound person burns 102 calories for every hour they spend sitting at a desk. If the job is 10hrs long, then that’s 1020 calories burnt for the day, not including commuting or sleeping (which typically add up to 500 calories). Yet in reality, Australians on average consume 2880 calories per day; in a society where 50% of all official jobs are largely desk-based, this is a major problem. Like the 20 000 speakers who have spoken at venues across Australia on health-related topics in the past decade, I call for a universal change in the way western countries interpret food and how we practice self-control.
