  1. >In your lifetime you've learned quite a bit.
  2. >Never sleep close to your alarm clock, because then you might turn it off while half asleep.
  3. >Don't use coffee as a substitute for rest.
  4. >Always brush your tongue, lest you end up with bad breath.
  5. >If you get a gut feeling that something horrible is about to happen you should listen to it.
  6. >And last, but most assuredly not least, never underestimate how far someone is willing to go to get what they want.
  7. >That last one is where this story begins.
  8. >You are Anonymous.
  9. >There's really nothing special about you. You're just a regular guy who gets up and goes to work every day.
  10. >You pay your bills and try to keep your word whenever you make arrangements with someone.
  11. >Amazing accomplishments are not your forte. You've never set any records. You've never won any trophies. Hell, you've never even gone skydiving.
  12. >There's only one thing that's really off about you, and that's more the fault of your surroundings than anything to do with you.
  13. >For the past six months you've been in another place.
  14. >No, not another state, and not another country, either.
  15. >It's an entirely different world.
  16. >A world you've grown quite accustomed to.
  17. >Instead of letting it get to you, you've adapted and made somewhat of a life here.
  18. >In fact, if it wasn't for the fact that everyone around you was a brightly colored pony and magic existed, you'd say things are rather normal here.
  19. >You work at the library with a pony named Twilight. It's easy to make mutual friends with the ponies she knows, but Twilight is the one you're most comfortable around.
  20. >You haven't quite gotten over being the only human in Equestria, but Twilight has made things increasingly easy for you.
  21. >Adjusting to your surroundings mostly consisted of asking her questions and actually receiving concise answers, and that is something you are eternally grateful for.
  22. >"Anon, can you pass me 'Guide to Complex Magicks'?"
  23. >So grateful that you were more than willing to take this job, even if it meant cleaning up piles of books every other week.
  24. >You bend down and find the book. Twilight catches it with her magic as you throw it to her, and she places it on the bookshelf next to her.
  25. "You want me to man the library this afternoon?"
  26. >"Uh... no. I have something I need to do, so you can go home."
  27. "Does it have anything to do with that trip?"
  28. >For some reason she perks up at this, "Yes, I uh... I'll be doing a lot more work these next few weeks." Her wings twitch and she turns away with a sigh. "With Princess Celestia and Princess Luna it hasn't been too much of a chore to get used to my duties, but..."
  29. "But?"
  30. >"It's stupid."
  31. "Oh come on. If it's bugging you it can't be THAT dumb."
  32. >She scoffs, "You have no idea. I've freaked out over less."
  33. "I'd like to hear that story."
  34. >"Well, you'll have to put up with not knowing."
  35. "It's gonna be boring around here."
  36. >"Hmm?"
  37. "When you leave, it'll be boring."
  38. >She trots over to you, hopping over a few piles of books here and there, "Boring? There hasn't been a single boring day in this town. Pinkie sees to that."
  39. >You roll your eyes.
  40. "I'm not talking about Pinkie. She's fun, yeah, but... I don't know. It'll feel weird not having you around. You're like my go-to mare."
  41. >"Heh, you'll just miss not being able to ask me questions."
  42. "Hey, I haven't been the one asking questions lately."
  43. >She pouts at that, "I'm curious. In fact I wouldn't mind paying a visit to the world you come from."
  44. "Sure, because that would go over so well. Anyways, let's get this done, then we can eat dinner."
  45. >"That sounds like a good plan." She turns back to the shelf and sighs, "Anon, can you answer something?"
  46. "Yeah, what is it?"
  47. >"What do you think about... being stuck here?"
  48. "Well, I can't exactly go back. We've already tried everything."
  49. >"Did you have anyone special back home?"
  50. "What, you mean like a girlfriend? No. Where's all this coming from?"
  51. >"Well, you can't just be alone forever."
  52. "Are we talking relationships now? I'm not sure I'm ready for that. It'd probably be kind of weird."
  53. >"Weird?"
  54. "I'm the only human, remember?"
  55. >"Oh..."
  56. >Silence.
  57. >"Let's uh... get back to work."
  58. >You decide to listen to her before this conversation gets any more awkward.
  59. >After eating with Twilight you head back to your home, a small house near the outskirts of Ponyville.
  60. >It was one bathroom and one bedroom, but that was really all you needed. No use for a two floor house when you live on your own.
  61. >You kick your shoes off in the doorway and let out a sigh, walking to the living room and falling onto the couch.
  62. >Hmm. Twilight would be gone tomorrow. For some reason this left you feeling... uneasy.
  63. >You close your eyes and hope things won't be too weird with her gone.
  64. ------
  65. >Another night drinking.
  66. >You lean over the bar and bring a hand to your face. These past few days you've been a bit more groggy than usual.
  67. >The bartender raises an eyebrow as he sets a bottle of beer in front of you, "Rough day?"
  68. "Rough few days."
  69. >"Mmm. I know how that is. Girl troubles?"
  70. "Ha, not really. Just losing some sleep."
  71. >"The two are not mutually exclusive."
  72. "I suppose not. Have to get over my own inhibitions first."
  73. >"You're one of a kind in this place Anon, that makes mares curious."
  74. "Heh, dating advice from a single bartender?"
  75. >The conversation is left at that. The bartender usually isn't one to drag out things pointlessly. You've never been one for long conversations either.
  76. >Honestly you've never entertained the concept of dating anyone since you've been here.
  77. >As you're about to finish your beer the door of the bar flies open, and everyone's gaze turns to it.
  78. >In the doorway is a panting Applejack.
  79. >You stand from the bar stool and make your way to her, leaning down.
  80. "AJ, you okay?"
  81. >"I... I'm fine Anon. Ya gotta come with me. Right now!"
  82. >She trots around you and starts to shove you out the door with her head.
  83. "Whoa... where's the fire."
  84. >"It ain't a fire Anon, ya just gotta see this."
  85. >You have no choice but to let her lead you away. Out of the corner opf your eye you see the bartender waving and smiling as you leave.
  86. >Bastard.
  87. >She leads you all the way to the other side of the town.
  88. >Back to Twilight's library.
  89. >As you approach the entrance your curiosity starts to get the best of you.
  90. "Did something happen with Twi?"
  91. >"No, Twi is fine, just..."
  92. >Applejack huffs and trots towards the door, shoving it open with a forehoof.
  93. >You're greeted with the sight of something... someone you never expected to see.
  94. >In the center of the library, sitting cross legged with a book in her lap, is a girl about your age. She has long dark hair, and is wearing a pair of slim glasses. She's dressed in a simple sweat shirt and jeans.
  95. >If your jaw could hit the floor it would have.
  96. >"She just showed up," says Applejack.
  97. >Finally noticing that she had company, her gaze locks with yours and she smiles, "Oh, hello!" She flips the book closed and sets it to the side, moving to stand. It's clear that she's slightly disoriented when she stumbles over her feet a little.
  98. >Eventually she regains her balance, her face a bit red, "Sorry, I'm still a bit shaky."
  99. >You don't know what the hell you should do in this situation, so you raise a hand and give her, at best, a nervous smile.
  100. "Uh... hey. My name's Anonymous."
  101. >She steps forward with a bright smile and holds out a hand, "I'm Jessica. It's nice to meet you Anonymous."
  102. >You shake her hand.
  103. "How did you end up here?"
  104. >She throws her arms out to the side and sighs, "I have no idea. One minute I was going to bed, and the next I was here. Where IS here, anyways?"
  105. "Well, it seems you've already met Applejack."
  106. >"Yeah, I have. I uh... kind of screamed."
  107. >You know exactly how she feels. When Twilight greeted you your first thought was that you had gone insane.
  108. "Well, I can assure you that you're not hallucinating. This is Equestria, and you and I seem to be the only humans here."
  109. >She frowns, "You're joking, right?"
  110. "Afraid not."
  111. >"Can't they use magic, though? Can't they send us back?"
  112. "Twilight, the girl that works here, has tried, but nothing ever works. I can't speak for you at all, but I've gotten rather used to being here."
  113. >"I um..." she brings a hand to her forehead and takes a deep breath, "This is a lot to take in. Is it okay if I stay in this... tree for now?"
  114. >Applejack steps forward and nods firmly, "I'll send a letter to Twi tonight. You just get some rest, ya hear?"
  115. >Jessica nods softly, and with that Applejack takes her leave.
  116. >You can't help but feel pretty bad about all this. It's easy enough when it's just you and you've already decided to stay, but now there's someone else who's stuck here.
  117. >Knowing how finding a way home turned out before it's hard to believe a repeat would be any help, but there isn't much of a choice.
  118. "Alright, it's kind of late and I need to head home. You gonna be alright?"
  119. >She frowns, "Can you... stay here?"
  120. "... What?"
  121. >Her face goes red, "I mean, you're the only other human here. I'd feel a lot more comfortable."
  122. "Okay, I'll grab a sleeping bag from the closet and crash below the loft tonight. It'll be easier anyways, since I work here."
  123. >"Alright."
  124. ------
  125. >You wake the next morning feeling a lot better than you had yesterday. Despite some slight ache in your back due to sleeping on the floor you feel rather rested. Sitting up and rubbing your eyes, you give a glance up to the loft.
  126. >There's a very light snoring sound coming from Twilight's bed.
  127. >Girl must be tougher than she looks. You didn't get any sleep the first few days you were in Equestria.
  128. >Standing up, you make your way downstairs and to the kitchen. It might be best if you both start the day with some food in your stomachs, even if there's no meat in Twilight's stock.
  129. >Fifteen minutes later and you're setting out some toast and eggs on the only table in the library. Those eggs were a lucky find, she probably keeps them around for baking in case Pinkie comes over.
  130. >"What smells good?"
  131. >You turn towards the voice, and there's Jessica at the top of the stairs, rubbing her eyes and letting out a big yawn.
  132. >She's in purple striped pajamas.
  133. >Something is nagging at the back of your mind.
  134. "Jessica?"
  135. >She grunts when she sits down at the table and turns to you, bed head and all. "What is it?"
  136. "Where are you getting all these clothes?"
  137. >Her eyes widen slightly, "Uh..."
  138. "You said you went to bed right? Wouldn't you only have your pajamas if you wore pajamas then?"
  139. >"Um... I went to bed without changing, and I found these pajamas in the closet!"
  140. "Why would ponies keep human clothes in their closet?"
  141. >Maaaybe they were for you?" She gives you a sheepish grin.
  142. >Alright, this shit is way too suspect.
  143. >You decide to let it drop for now. You're too tired to deal with this shit.
  144. >Deciding to save the interrogation for later, you start to eat your breakfast. You think you see her visibly relax as she does the same.
  145. >After breakfast you decide to take her on a tour of Ponyville. All the way from Fluttershy's cottage to Rarity's boutique.
  146. >By the time the tour is finished your feet are starting to hurt, and both of you decide to take a break on one of the benches in the town square.
  147. >For someone you barely know she's awfully comfortable about sitting right next to you.
  148. >"You know, " she says softly, glancing at the ponies as they pass by, "I'm really glad you're here Anon. Things would be... different if you weren't around."
  149. >You laugh.
  150. "Tell me about it. Being all on my own was pretty stressful at times. It took me a while to realize I wasn't alone."
  151. >She perks up at that, "What's that mean?"
  152. "For a while it felt like I was by myself. One human in a weird world that by all things I know shouldn't really exist. I uh... I tended to lock myself in my room a lot. Tried to avoid talking with the ponies."
  153. >"What changed?"
  154. "Well, that pony that I work with at the library. Her name is Twilight, and when she hired me things started to get better."
  155. >"Really?"
  156. "Yeah, a lot better."
  157. >She sighs and intertwines her hands, looking at the ground with a frown, "This was a bad idea."
  158. "What was, pretending to be human?"
  159. >"Found me out, huh?"
  160. "Yeah, you were never a very good liar Twi. So what brought this on?"
  161. >"My trip was actually only for a day. You just... seem so lonely. I wanted you to be happy."
  162. >That is some heavy shit. You're not sure you were ready for that.
  163. "What about you?"
  164. >"What about me?"
  165. "Why pretend to be human and sacrifice your own happiness just to make me a little more comfortable?"
  166. >"I guess I can be a bit selfish too."
  167. "You mean..."
  168. >"Yeah."
  169. >This seems to be getting crazier and crazier.
  170. "Since when?"
  171. >"About two months ago."
  172. "Huh..."
  173. >Twilight leans back and looks up at the sky. "Like I said, this was probably a stupid idea. I can't be a human for you Anon. I just wanted to be."
  174. >You smirk.
  175. "For what it's worth you look really good. I like the glasses."
  176. >She smiles, "You really think so?"
  177. "Yeah."
  178. >"Yeah well... this isn't me," she says softly.
  179. "Nah, you still look like Twilight. Still, it'd be better to not pretend, wouldn't it?"
  180. >"Yeah, you're right. I'll turn back now."
  181. >With a quick flash of light, Twilight the alicorn replaces Jessica. She doesn't look any less down in the dumps, though.
  182. >"Guess I can get rid of these," she says, wrapping her magic around the glasses and taking them off.
  183. >You turn to her and grab the glasses in mid air, putting them back on and cupping her cheek so she faces you.
  184. >"Anon?"
  185. "Keep the glasses. They look good."
  186. >You lean in and kiss her.
  187. >You hear a few ponies gasp at the public display, but you could care less.
  188. >Reservations about this still remain, but when you pull away and see her warm smile you're pretty sure you can get over those reservations.
