  1. Lim-Dûl looked exhausted. Bloody drops of sweat now covered his face and bare shoulders, mixing with his seeping wounds.
  2.
  3. Jodah felt little better himself. The ground seemed to pitch and roll beneath him in a slow undulating motion, and his chest felt tight. Worst of all, he felt his mental mansion was nearly empty. The windows out onto distant lands were shuttered tight, and the rooms were bare.
  4.
  5. Lim-Dûl began to cast and Jodah countered. Another casting, another counter, each coming closer together, Jodah beating aside the magical bolts of Lim-Dûl’s attack faster and faster. He felt he was inside Lim-Dûl’s mind itself, countering the spells before the necromancer had even considered them.
  6.
  7. He was now walking through the ghostly halls of his opponent’s mental mansion, destroying whatever he found there.
  8.
  9. In one room, he found a great statue of Leshrac carved in what seemed to be obsidian. Here was a place of power, something more than just a mere casting. Jodah moved to rip it from Lim-Dûl’s memory, to break this particular link of his chain of power.
  10.
  11. Then the statue opened its eyes and looked down on Jodah.
  12.
  13. There was hatred within Leshrac’s yellow orbs. Jodah felt himself flung from the necromancer’s mind, and he stumbled backward in his physical form. He rolled upon landing and pulled himself up, his muscles complaining as he did so.
