- >Sitting in the passenger seat of your squad car, you reach into the paper bag and retrieve your prize.
- >Two cupcakes wrapped in cellophane, frosted in pink with plenty of sprinkles.
- "Yo, Ty."
- >Handing one to your partner in the driver's seat, you both unwrap and chow down on your desserts, the lunch that came before it now nothing more than fast food wrappers in a bag.
- >"God DAMN, these cupcakes are always so good. Almost makes me regret not getting one of those androids myself!" He practically hollers after destroying the baked good.
- "Hey, come on, man. I'm sure Emmett makes good stuff too! Like, uh, what was that fuckin' thing you brought for lunch left week?" You ask, snapping your fingers to try and jog your memory.
- >"That casserole? Yeah, I guess it's pretty aight." He shrugs. "We still on for dinner Saturday?"
- "Yeah, I'll be grilling and Nat's gonna be baking."
- >"Right, right. We'll bring somethin'." He responds. The two of you chatter on about nothing before your radio buzzes in.
- >"Any squads in the Downtown area, we've received a report of a missing droid near Gamma Boulevard, please investigate." The robotic man spoke.
- >"Shit, that's a few blocks down." Your partner responded, buckling his seatbelt and turning the key, starting the engine.
- "Better check it out, then." You act in kind, buckling your own and preparing for the ride.
- >Usually a missing droid just meant something like a bug in the programming caused her to walk into a wall indefinitely, or they wanted to surprise their partner with something.
- >Still, beats paperwork or busting poor shmucks who couldn't afford their dokis. The peace of mind brought to their partner's face always gave you a smile, even if the job was boring.
- >Bringing up the scanner, you began to look for any nearby droid's signals.
- >Plenty nearby, and getting your bearings, you see that they're for the most part in areas that make sense. A department store, a restaurant, an apartment complex, a hospital.
- >However, there was one blip on the radar that wasn't like the others. Looking to where it should be in the real world, you raised a brow.
- "Hey, Ty. There's one over in that abandoned hotel." You said, pointing it out.
- >"Got it." The car veers toward it, and soon enough you're exiting the vehicle alongside your partner.
- >The entrance to the building was barred only in appearance, as the boards nailed to the door weren't nailed to anything else. With a bit of pulling, they opened, and the two of you entered.
- >The dusty lobby had a trail through it, as though two were walking through it before a struggle broke out. Something sank in you as you pulled your sidearm, flicking the light on as you did so.
- >The two of you moved like shadows through the lobby and up the stairs, following the trail in the dust.
- >A few floors up, something began to hit your ears. Music? ...Children's music?
- >"You hear that? Sounds like white boy shit." Ty whispered over at you.
- "Hell no, that's too lame even for me." You respond, resolving to find the source of it. That could be where your missing person was.
- >In silence you creep up into the hallway of the hotel that had the sound spilling into it. Something fell in the pit of your stomach as you crept closer, Ty taking the lead.
- >Eventually, the music bled through the walls as you found a room without a door. Ty snuck in as you kept watch. After a moment, you began to walk in.
- >"Anon, don't come in here, man!" He whisper yelled at you with a horrified look on his face.
- "Why, what's the-"
- >"Help..." A weak voice said from the far wall, and you turned your attention toward it.
- >A horrible sight; A Natsuki droid, Year One model, badly damaged.
- >You rushed over to it, and knelt by her side. Her legs were hacked at as though someone took a buzzsaw to them, and her left forearm was smashed. Strange fluid covered the ground. Oil? You didn't know enough about the inner workings to make a guess.
- "What happened?" You ask her, holding back the strange feeling of seeing someone so similar to your own Natsuki in such distress.
- >"Some weird guy asked for help on the street, and-" She surged for a second. "He brought me up here, and did this." This model wasn't equipped with super recognizable facial features, but you could almost see the pain in her eyes. "Why... why does it hurt so bad?"
- "Shit..." The thoughts of what had occurred to her, of how bad it must've been for a robot to be in pain almost made you throw up on the spot. "We're gonna-" The music sparked in volume as the other door in the room swung open.
- >"Show's over, princess, I've gotta- Oh." The stranger said, a sledgehammer resting against his shoulder.
- >"DPS! Drop the fucking weapon!" Ty said, pointing his pistol with a sideways stance at the man.
- >"Relax, officer! It's just a machine, it isn't real!" He said, lazily raising one hand as if to calm the two of you down.
- >Just a machine?
- >You looked at the droids eyes, the soft pink glow slowly dimming as her cries for help turned to mere whimpers.
- >After a moment, you could no longer tell any pink was there at all. Not because she was out of power, though.
- >No, all you saw was red.
- >Rising to your feet, you immediately broke into a lunge for the man. He attempted to swing his hammer at you, but you caught the handle with the palm of your hand and deflected it. Tackling him further into the room, you pinned him against the wall.
- "What the fuck is wrong with you?" You ask without expecting an answer, pressing his neck up against the cracking drywall.
- >"What's wrong with me? Nothing!" The rage built, and you shoved a fist into his stomach as party music played in the background.
- "You're going away for a long time, fucker! If I don't kill your ass first!"
- >His face turned to one of struggle as the wind slowly left him, your grip tightening.
- >Suddenly, a sharp pain erupted in your chest. Distracted, your hand loosened as you looked down.
- >Bastard had grabbed a hold of a huge nail out of the broken wall and shiv'd you. He twisted it and you fell away, the spike embedded in your chest.
- >He went to grab his mallet, and a shot rang out as he fell to the ground screaming.
- >"Gotcha, bitch!" Ty yelled over the tunes.
- >Staggering to your feet, you gave the man a kick in the ribs for good measure before realizing.
- >Shit, Natsuki.
- "Hey, Ty, take care of this fucker! I gotta get her to a hospital!" You shouted, staggering into the main room.
- >"You sure? You aight to get her there?" He asked, already taking out his cuffs and moving over the screaming psychopath.
- "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine!" You said, grabbing her in as comfortable of a princess carry as you could manage, with regards to her dangling legs and the six inch impalement you had.
- >Rushing down the steps with her, you found that your control was quickly fading. Maybe you weren't so fine.
- >You looked down at her, and she still whimpered, though weaker and weaker every second.
- >Damn it, damn it, damn it. You pushed onward through your pain, and got out to your squad car.
- >And of course, Ty has the fucking keys. Alright, you say to yourself, the hospital is just down the road.
- >Rushing down the street, doki in arms, you push past the citizens on the sidewalk and make your way to the hospital, entering in through the emergency room entrance.
- "Droid ward, where is it?" You shout at the desk manager, who hops up to show you.
- >Bringing her in, you lay her on a table as a man in a doctor's coat rushes in the room, before giving you a look of shock.
- >"Oh my god... What happened to her? What happened to you?" He asks, coming to the table to take a closer look.
- "Some whackjob abducted her and did this. And this." You point to the sharp metal bit sticking out of your chest. Now that she's in safety, you find yourself woozy from the exertion. "Can you... can you fix her, doc?"
- >"I'll do my best, but she's been leaking fluid for quite a bit by the looks of it. We'll get you a..." Was all you heard before the world went dark.
- >You woke in a sterile white room, lying in bed with various tubes sticking out of you.
- >To your right, Natsuki, Ty, and his husband, Emmett.
- >To your left, another doctor, a man you hadn't seen before, and another Natsuki.
- >"Anon! Fuck, I was so worried!" The Natsuki to your right grabbed a hold of you tight, to which you returned the gesture through the pain of her squeezing.
- >"Miss, you may want to hold off on that right now. His chest is probably pretty sore still. That criminal did a pretty number on you, officer. Had you out for a few days." He said, turning his attention to you. Your Natsuki backed off a bit, still holding onto your arm.
- "Yeah. Hey, what happened to that droid I rescued?" You asked, not worried about yourself in the slightest.
- >"She's right here." He stepped to the side and gestured to the man and the other Natsuki. You were confused at first; this wasn't a Year One model.
- >"The systems in my older body were really fucked up from running without proper fluid, so they had to transfer my brain to this new one." Her face, now gifted with expression, turned to a joyful smile with what appeared to be water forming at the edges of her eyes.
- >"If you hadn't gotten there when you did... I can't thank you enough." The man said, tears already flowing from his face, his pink doki comforting him.
- "Hey, don't worry about it, man." You say softly, giving him a nod of knowing. "She's safe, I'm safe, we're all safe. That's what matters. Hey, Ty?"
- >"Yeah?" Your partner responded.
- "Did you get that guy down to the station?"
- >"Sho did. Charged with kidnapping, assault, resisting arrest, and just about everything else I could think of that fit. Tried to claim police brutality but I didn't see none of that." He smirked at you.
- "Good to know." You sigh and relax back into the bed. "So, doc. How long am I gonna be in here for?"
- >"You should be out by Friday, granted everything comes back alright on your tests. But I don't expect to find you've been infected with 'nail in the chest' disease, so Friday is a safe bet." He responded, taking a look over your charts.
- "Nice." You turn to Ty. "We're still on for Saturday. You might need to grill instead, though."
- >He chuckled. "I can do that."
- "Cool." Pointing to the couple to your left, you spoke once more. "You guys are invited too, if you want."
- >"Of course! We'll be there." The man spoke, his Natsuki giving a nod.
- "Alright, with that all settled, I think I'm gonna rest a bit more. Everyone mind giving me and Nat a minute?"
- >The party obliged, and soon the room was empty save for you and her. Turning your head to her, you cleared your throat.
- "Hey, sorry for uh, getting hurt and worrying you."
- >"It's alright. Well, I am kinda mad that it happened, obviously." The worried visage on her face turned to one of solemn understanding. "But I know you're just doing what you have to to keep people safe. It's heroic, even if it's stupid."
- "Yeah. I'll be more careful." You responded, getting choked up at the thought of leaving your Natsu alone in this world.
- >"You'd better." She leaned down and gave you a kiss.
- >There in the hospital bed, you took in the almost serene atmosphere of being embraced by your lover after such a traumatic experience.
