  1. >You are Anon
  2. >You are an aircraft technician
  3. >You spend pretty much all your time making sure all the plones are fit to fly
  4. >It's a tough job, but you love it
  5. >Most days
  6. >Today isn't one of those days.
  7. >It's a cold morning, you can see your breath in the air
  8. >Shivering, you put your hands in your pockets and walk to the smallest hangar, somewhat out of the way of the other facilities
  9. >It's more of a large-ish garage really, but there's room enough to fit three or four plones in there comfortably, but you know there's only one inside right now
  10. >You sigh and step inside and closing the side door behind you
  11. >"Hey Anon!"
  12. >JESUS FUCKING CHRIST
  13. >You jump, noticeably, you hadn't been expecting anyone else to be in here
  14. >Clutching your heart, you turn to look at your would-be assailant
  15. >It's one of the other technicians, a Griffon. You forget his name
  16. >"I was just finishing up the tool check, you're just in time to sign it off."
  17. >You follow him out onto the hangar floor and over to the tool chests. He's talking but you're not really paying attention
  18. >You quickly sign his paperwork off to get him out of your hair, and he finally leaves
  19. >Hearing the door close, you sigh again and turn to face the reason you're in here in the first place
  20. >In the middle of the floor, wrapped up in a blanket and fast asleep is a vibrant yellow helicopter
  21. >Technically, a Westland Sea King HAR3
  22. >But her name is Sunny
  23. >She's a search and rescue helicopter, everybody's friend, one of the most pleasant plones, ponies, or really, anything-s, you've ever met
  24. >One of your only real friends in this quite frankly ridiculous place
  25. >Which made the whole thing so much more difficult
  26. >Sunny has just been retired
  27. >You have been assigned to decommission her
  28.
  29. >You take a deep breath and walk over to her
  30. >You really don't want to wake her up
  31. >More than anything right now you just want to walk away and leave her be
  32. >But you can't go against orders like that
  33. >Reluctantly you reach a hand out and shake her awake
  34. "Hey Sunny, time to get up."
  35. >She scrunches up her face and mumbles something incoherently before her eyes flutter open
  36. >"Oh, good morning Anon."
  37. >You can't think of anything good about it
  38. >But despite everything you manage to crack a smile
  39. "Hi Sunny."
  40. >She stretches herself out and feathers her blades before sitting down on the blanket
  41. >"So, today is the day I suppose."
  42. >Your smile drops instantly
  43. "Yeah, yeah it is..."
  44. >Silence takes over
  45. >"Oh come now, none of that. You know I can't stand to see anyplony sad!"
  46. >She pulls you into a tight hug
  47. >Honestly, you needed that
  48. >You also really don't want to let go
  49. >But eventually she pulls back, breaking the embrace
  50. >"Feeling better, honey?"
  51. >Even in the midst of everything that is happening, she's more concerned about you than herself
  52. >You always admired that part of her
  53. "A little. Thanks, Sunny."
  54. >"Always happy to help!"
  55. >She's wearing the cutest little smile
  56. >Stay strong, Anon. For Sunny.
  57. >"So, what happens now?"
  58. "Well, I guess if you're sure you're ready, we can...we can start the process."
  59. >You hope she isn't ready. You really hope she isn't ready.
  60. >"No point putting it off any longer I suppose" She says, standing up "I don't want to cause a problem for anyone else."
  61. >You can't do this.
  62.
  63. "A-are you sure?"
  64. >"Hm?"
  65. >She looks at you as she makes her way over to the side for something or other
  66. "I said are you sure? That you're ready, that is..."
  67. >You were desperately trying to come up with anything you could use to put this off
  68. >Or stop it all together
  69. >Think brain, think!
  70. >"Oh, I should think so."
  71. >Dammit
  72. >"Would you care for some tea, Anon?"
  73. >Convenient, you could use the time she was making tea to come up with some excuse
  74. "Uh, sure, please."
  75. >You can hear her humming to herself over the clanging of mugs
  76. >Okay, use this time well, what can you do to stop this?
  77. >Can't blame the tools, you signed off on them so that would just come back to you
  78. >Say she was unwilling?
  79. >No, that would be a lie, and they'd just try again later, probably with someone else on the job
  80. >Preservation?
  81. >No, if she was going to be kept they would've decided that a while ago
  82. >Unless...
  83. >Unless you decided to preserve her
  84. >Sure, you didn't have the space, or money, or time to do it, but you could find a way, right?
  85. >"Anon?"
  86. >Maybe the admin guys would let you bring her here and you could do the work in your spare time
  87. >"Anon?"
  88. >You'd probably have to rent one of the Tee Hangars to keep her in, but it'd be possible to-
  89. >"Anon, are you okay?"
  90. >Sunny is gently shaking your shoulders in her hooves
  91. "Huhwhat?"
  92. >She lets go and gives you an amused smile
  93. >"You kind of zoned out a bit there, honey. Oh, here's your tea!"
  94. "Thanks."
  95. >You don't even like tea
  96. >Not only that, but you haven't come up with anything either
  97. >Maybe you can make some small talk to distract from the situation for some extra time
  98. "So, no tea for you?"
  99. >"Oh, no, I was told that not drinking anything before this whole business would make it easier."
  100. >It would make the whole thing quicker, maybe
  101. >You didn't like 'quicker'
  102.
  103. "You seem awfully...nonchalant about this."
  104. >Or rather she seemed to be dealing with it a lot better than you were
  105. >"Oh, I've known this has been coming for a long time now, Anon. To tell you the truth, I'm absolutely terrified. I've never been more scared in my entire life."
  106. >She sits down again, looking oddly bashful
  107. >You don't get it
  108. >"I've had long enough to accept that this was going to happen at some point no matter what I or anyplony else did about it. Even what you're thinking about doing right now."
  109. >How did she...
  110. "I wasn't-"
  111. >"Anon, I can read you like a book. I know you, and I know that right now you're trying to think of any possible thing you can do to stop this happening. Am I right?"
  112. >You nod
  113. >It's true, you've been working with Sunny for the entire time you've been here. You can both read each other just like that.
  114. "But what if I take you out and do the work myself?! It'll take a while, but I know I could keep you going-"
  115. >You feel a weight on your shoulders and look up
  116. >Sunny is standing in front of you on her hind legs, using you as support
  117. >A weary smile adorns her face
  118. >"Anon, honey, it means the world to me that you'd even consider doing something like that."
  119. >Her expression changes ever so slightly. A sad smile, an expression you've only rarely seen on her
  120. >"But lets not beat around the bush, flying is a young plone's game, and I'm certainly anything but young anymore."
  121.
  122. >You hated to admit it, but she was right. You could see the chipped and tarnished paint, the age old skin repairs, the tell tale signs that corrosion was forming on some of the tertiary panels around her body
  123. >"They've revoked my certification, Anon. I can't fly any more. Can you imagaine living your life not being able to do the very thing you exist for?"
  124. >That sounded truly, truly awful, But...
  125. "But I could fix you up! You could fly again!"
  126. >"Sure, I could fly again. I could fly right now if I wanted to. But who knows how long I could do that for? I'm not safe anymore, honey, and I don't want to be putting anyone else in danger like that."
  127. >You couldn't meet her eyes anymore
  128. >You could feel desperation building up inside you
  129. >You know that everything she just said was true, but it didn't mean you felt any better about shutting her down for good
  130. >"Anon..."
  131. >You look up, she's staring at you with big, watery eyes
  132. >"It's time for me to go."
  133. >That was the straw that broke the camels back
  134. >You pulled her into the tightest hug you could manage, sobbing and spluttering
  135. >You don't want her to go
  136. >She can't go
  137.
  138. >You don't want her to go
  139. >She's your best friend
  140. >She can't go
  141. >You hold onto her like your life depended on it
  142. >You don't want to let go
  143. >You can't let go
  144. >You can feel her shuddering and hear sniffing, she's crying too
  145. >Not to the degree you are, but the feeling is there
  146. "I-I-I d-don't want you to g-go, Sunny."
  147. >"I d-don't want to go, honey."
  148. >You feel her grip on you tighten
  149. >"B-but I know it's the only way."
  150. >No
  151. >No no no no no
  152. "Y-you could be a t-t-training aid for the n-new techs!"
  153. >Please
  154. "Y-you could help them out and we'd see each other e-every day, just like normal!"
  155. >Please
  156. >"Anon..."
  157. >She pushes herself back from you so you are face to face
  158. >There are slow tears streaming down her face, the same sad smile as earlier
  159. >"That's no life for me, stuck on the ground like that, having all the newbies poking around, being stuck in the same place all the time. Do you really think I'd want that?"
  160. >Of course not, it'd be a living hell for her
  161. >But it'd mean she'd still be here
  162. >You know there's no way she'd do that
  163. >But you really wish she would
  164. >You start up sobbing again and she pulls you back into a hug, rubbing your back
  165. "P-p-please don't go."
  166.
  167. >You bury your head into the inside of her neck
  168. >"Shhhh, shhh, it's okay, Anon."
  169. >It's not okay
  170. >But coming from her, it does make you feel a little bit better
  171. >Sunny always knows what to do
  172. >You stay like this for you guess about ten minutes before she speaks again
  173. >"Anon, do you remember what I told you when I first met you?
  174. >Of course you did
  175. >She'd found you after you broke your leg on the beach and took you to the hospital
  176. >You've been inseparable since
  177. >You tried to thank her afterwards and she told you
  178. >"I live to help."
  179. "You live to help."
  180. >You both answer at the same time
  181. >"That's right, honey. Now, look at it like this, I've been around a long time now, and I've been really lucky to be able to help as many ponies, griffons, well, help as many beings as I have."
  182. >You nod, still nestled in her neck
  183. >"And now I've done my part. I loved doing it, but it's done, it's time for someploney else to pick where I've left off. Someploney else who lives to help."
  184. >You nod again
  185. >"I really loved working with you Anon. You've been a great friend, and we've had a hell of a time together, haven't we?"
  186. >You mumble in acknowledgment
  187. >"But you know what they say, all good things must come to an end."
  188. >You sniff
  189. >"And that's okay, Anon. I've done what I love doing all my life, and now it's time for me to take my leave."
  190. >You take a deep breath
  191. >Dammit Sunny, you always know just what to say
  192. >You pull yourself away from her and look her in the eyes
  193. >She's smiling
  194. >"Do you understand now, Anon?"
  195. >You nod
  196.
  197. >You think you get it now
  198. >You're not happy, but you understand
  199. >You sniff one last time and let out a deep breath
  200. >You stand up and dry your face with the back of your sleeve
  201. >"Feel a little better now?"
  202. >She gives you a look of gentle concern
  203. "Y-yeah...I guess I do, at least a bit. Thanks."
  204. >"You know I'm always happy to help, Anon."
  205. >It still feels wrong to you
  206. >Shes done so much to help you, and you can't help her now
  207. >But, everything she's said was true
  208. >You'd started to accept that there wasn't anthing you could do about it
  209. >It didn't make it hurt any less
  210. >You needed to clear out your mind
  211. "I'm sorry Sunny, I just need a minute."
  212. >"Oh, you take all the time you need honey, you know where I'll be."
  213. >You head back over to the side door and step outside
  214. >It's pretty much the same temperature
  215. >Stupid unheated hangars
  216. >There is, however, a cold breeze that was starting to sting your eyes
  217. >You didn't care
  218. >Nothing else mattered right now
  219. >You lean against the wall and hold your head in your hands
  220. >It's all real, and there isn't anthing you can do about it
  221. >This may well be the first time you truly resented your job
  222. >Theres nothing else you can do now
  223. >Except make the process as comfortable as possible for Sunny
  224. >At the very least she deserved that
  225. >Another deep breath, and you step back into the hangar
  226.
  227. >Sunny is curled up on the floor again, humming to herself
  228. "Ah, all good now?"
  229. >No
  230. "Yeah."
  231. >She sits up and you walk over to her
  232. >You crouch to meet her eyes and put your hands on her neck
  233. "I think...I think if you're ready, then I'm ready."
  234. >She hesitates, looking away for a split second
  235. >She breathes in deeply and holds it, closing her eyes
  236. >After a few seconds she lets it all out through her nose
  237. >"Okay, I'm ready, Honey."
  238. >Your heart sinks
  239. >She opens her eyes and looks up at you
  240. >"So, what happens now?"
  241. "W-well, you just sight tight for a moment and I'll go and grab some tools."
  242. >You walk over to the chest a grab a torque wrench and the appropriate head, giving the tool a few idle spins in your hand
  243. "First off, I'm going to have to take off your blades, you'll probably want to lie down."
  244. >"Ugh, I always feel so naked with my blades off!"
  245. >Despite everything, you manage to crack a smile
  246. >You make your way back and crouch down next to her
  247. >You lean her towards you slightly to get better access to the main rotor hub, and you start removing the bolts holding her blades in place
  248. >"Hehehe, that tickles."
  249. >That reminds you...
  250. "Hey, remember that time that...oh, what's his name? The Kiowa..."
  251. >"Tex?"
  252. "Yeah, Tex. Remember the time he struck that tree and had to have a blade off?"
  253. >"Pffft, yeah, he was so ticklish he kicked one of the other techs in the face!"
  254. "Yeah, don't do that please."
  255. >"Very funny, honey, I'm not that bad."
  256. "Oh, I'll be the judge of that."
  257. >You pull the bolts out and put everything into a FOD container
  258. >One blade off, just ten left to go
  259.
  260. >You could tell Sunny was uncomfortable
  261. >She never liked anyone messing about with her tail rotor, it was just one of those things
  262. >The 5 main blades came off without any incidents, and now you were taking off her sixth and final tail blade
  263. >One last twist and the last fixing came loose, allowing the blade to slide out
  264. "There, that's the last one."
  265. >Sunny sighs quietly
  266. >"I always feel so weird when my blades are off. It's like I'm missing a limb. Know what I mean?"
  267. "Mmmhmm."
  268. >You had no clue
  269. >She gets up and stretches her legs, flexing them one by one
  270. >"So, what next?"
  271. >This wasn't going to be good
  272. "Well, you're probably going to want to lie down again. I have to bleed the hydraulics."
  273. >"O-oh..."
  274. >This always freaks the plones out a little
  275. >"Well, lets get it over with then."
  276. >She trots around in a circle and lies back down
  277. >You grab a screwdriver and a bucket
  278. >You undo the fasteners from around her engine cowling and take of the covering, revealing the inner workings of the plone
  279. >You find the reservoir and attach a hose to the return flow
  280. >The thick red liquid begins to fill up the bucket
  281. >"I don't feel so great, honey."
  282. >This process usually makes the plones a little woozy
  283. >She wont be able to stand up unassisted by the end of this
  284. >You reach a hand out and rest it on her neck
  285. >"Don't worry Sunny, I'm here."
  286. >You'll always be there for her
  287.
  288. >The last of the fluid drains out, the bucket is full
  289. "Hey, I'm gonna get up, okay?"
  290. >"Mmmhphkay."
  291. >You stand and hold up a little make sure she doesn't tip over
  292. >She yawns, but stays put
  293. >You grab the bucket of Aeroshell and move it over to the side
  294. >You put the bucket down and wipe your hands on your overalls
  295. >Hydraulic fluid always smells funny, and it always seems to cling to you
  296. >You turn back to Sunny
  297. >You hate seeing her like this
  298. >It looks...wrong seeing her without blades
  299. >Her head is swaying a little, and she looks tired
  300. >You know she can't even get up anymore, not without the hydraulic fluid
  301. >It was only going to get worse
  302. >You close your eyes, slowly let out a deep breath, and walk back over to her
  303. >You get down on your knees in front of her
  304. "How're you holding up?"
  305. >"I-I've been better..."
  306. >Her and you both
  307. "I'm sorry."
  308. >"S'not your fault, honey."
  309. >You're pretty sure it is
  310. >"What now?"
  311. >The part you were really dreading
  312. >The last part before she gets processed somewhere else
  313. >The part that would end it all
  314. >You can feel your eyes getting watery again
  315. "W-well, the next part is to t-take out your engines."
  316. >"O-oh."
  317. >She knows
  318. "I'm going to connect you to the ground power."
  319. >You weren't ready for her to go yet
  320.
  321. >You walk over to the weird magical generator they had in all the hangers
  322. >You grab the cable and walk over to her, fitting it into a little hatch just below her engine cowlings
  323. >The generator starts working automatically after being plugged in, some kind of enchantment, you had been told
  324. >Sunny seems to perk up from the extra power into her system, if only a little bit
  325. >You walk back over to the tool chest and grab what you need for this last part of the process
  326. >You stifle a shuddering breath and make you way back to Sunny, to the side with the cowling already open
  327. "I'm going to start on engine one now, okay?"
  328. >"Okay."
  329. >You set about disconnecting everything, fuel lines, bleed air lines, wiring...
  330. >Deliberately working slowly
  331. >Neither of you speak
  332. >The silence is oppressive
  333. >One of you has to say something
  334. "I've always admired you, you know?"
  335. >"Mmm?"
  336. "Putting yourself out on the line every day, going into danger."
  337. >she really was amazing
  338. >She really IS amazing
  339. >"Oh, stop it you, You're making an old mare blush! I just do what needs to be done."
  340. >Always humble about her work
  341. >'Oh, it was nothing' or 'Just doing my job'
  342. >Or 'I live to help'
  343. "That doesn't make it any less impressive."
  344. >It was inspiring, even
  345. >She made you strive to do better
  346. >You don't know if you can keep that up if she's not there
  347. >You sigh
  348. "You might feel a little bit of a tug here."
  349. >You'd disconnected the engine completely, but it was stuck on a snug-fitting flange
  350. >You pull with both your hands
  351. >With a slight screech of metal on metal, the engine comes free
  352. >One down, one to go
  353.
  354. >You begin undoing the camloc fasteners on the other cowling
  355. >It comes free, revealing engine number two
  356. >Unlike engine one, which was mainly used for powering the rotors, engine two was mainly used for electrical power, so the process would be a little different
  357. "Hey, this one might take me a bit longer, alright?"
  358. >"You take all the time you need, honey."
  359. >The reply was croaky
  360. >She was definitely getting weaker through the whole thing
  361. >Not surprising, really
  362. >You can only imagine how she feels
  363. >You start disconnecting the various lines and connections to the engine and the turbine attached to the power shaft behind
  364. >You pull away the fuel line to get better access to-
  365. "Ow!"
  366. >"You okay back there, Anon?"
  367. >You'd cut you palm on one of the corners of the cowling
  368. "Yeah, just a little cut."
  369. >"You're hurt? Let me have a look."
  370. >She tries to get up, but only manages to shift her balance a little
  371. "I'm fine Sunny, really."
  372. >"Nuh-uh, not buying it honey, now let me have a look."
  373. >You give in and walk over to give her a better look
  374. >You really were fine, but you didn't want to argue with her, especially considering...
  375. >"Mmm, you'll want to clean that out, there's a first aid kit by the door."
  376. >You do as she says and grab the kit
  377. >It stings a little when you clean the wound
  378. >You put a plaster over it and give your hand a few quick stretches to check it's stuck
  379. >"See, good as new!"
  380. >She's smiling
  381. >A weak smile, but it's still there
  382. >She's still helping
  383. >Dammit, you were really going to miss her...
  384.
  385. >That was it
  386. >Blades off, fluid bled, engines out, all the other little tasks, all taken care of
  387. >There was nothing left to do
  388. >No more time to waste
  389. >You're putting your tools away, very methodically
  390. >Using the time to steel yourself up for what comes next
  391. >Deep breaths, Anon
  392. >You need to be strong
  393. >You need to be strong for Sunny
  394. >You turn back around to face her
  395. >Still in that same position, resting her head on the floor
  396. >Her eyes are half closed, she's really tired running only on ground power
  397. >"Anon?"
  398. "Y-yeah?"
  399. >"Is that everything?"
  400. "Y-yeah, yeah, that's everything."
  401. >Tears are welling up in your eyes again
  402. >"Oh...s-so, I guess it's time?"
  403. >You can barely even nod
  404. >You're totally numb
  405. >This wonderful being
  406. >Your best friend
  407. >Only hanging on by a thread, and about to enter the big black
  408. >Try as you might, you can't hold in the tears any longer
  409. "I-I'm r-r-really gonna miss you, S-Sunny."
  410. >"I'll miss you, honey."
  411. >Her eyes are watering too
  412. >You sit down on the floor and cradle her in your arms, desperately trying to protect her from the inevitable
  413.
  414. >"A-Anon."
  415. >You barely manage a mumble, still holding her close
  416. >"I-I think I'm ready."
  417. >You pull her tighter, letting out a shuddering breath
  418. "Y-you know, Sunny...you always...y-you always made me want to do better. T-to be more like you."
  419. >It was true, she affected you more than she'd ever know
  420. >"Y-you make sure you k-keep doing better, honey. For me?"
  421. >You will
  422. >You'll do anything for Sunny
  423. "I w-will."
  424. >She lightly nuzzles your neck
  425. >You know it's time now
  426. "S-Sunny?"
  427. >"Mmm?"
  428. "I'm g-g-gonna take out the g-ground power now..."
  429. >She takes a deep breath
  430. >"Okay."
  431. >You move your hand to the plug
  432. >You don't want to do it
  433. >You grab it
  434. >You don't want to do it
  435. >You pull out the plug
  436. >You immediate hear the sound of Sunny's gyros start to spool down
  437. >The analogue circuits in her system begin to power down
  438. >A tear leaves her eye
  439. >And she starts humming
  440. >The song she always hums, her favourite song
  441. >She looks up at you in a kind of unspoken agreement
  442. >You both start singing
  443. "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine"
  444. >"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine"
  445. "You make me happy, when skies are grey"
  446. >"You make me happy, when skies are grey"
  447. "You'll never know dear, how much I love you"
  448. >"You'll never know dear, how much I love you"
  449. "Please don't take my sunshine away"
  450. >She doesn't join in the last verse
  451. >The sound of whine of the gyros is gone completely
  452. >Her eyes are closed
  453. >She's gone
  454. >You hold her close and weep
  455.
  456. >You are Anon
  457. >Job time: 6 hours 13 minutes
  458. >All work finished and signed for
  459. >You are broken and hollow
  460. >You have work again tomorrow as usual
  461. >But you're going to do better from now on
  462. >You promised
  463.
