  1. Chapter 1
  2. I wake up at 5am at the sound of my alarm , I push myself of my bed, it was still night so I turned on the lamp on my nightstand to the left. The room I was sleeping in was rather spartan , a bunk bed with a metal frame at the left side of the room next to the wall was present , a nightstand to it's left where I turned on the lamp to dress myself and get prepared. After I dressed myself in my colonel uniform I went over to the bathroom to wash my face, I turned on the sink and cold water came from it, I washed myself and stared at my figure on the mirror, I took a comb and started to comb my disheveled brown hair. While I was fixing myself up I recounted what had happened yesterday, everything was in place, I could feel the excitement down to my bones, ‘today is the day’ I told myself, there was no going back after this. As I exited the bathroom the man on the upper bed of the bunk bed woke up, he had an small beard, hazel eyes, black hair brown eyes and a light tan typical of andalusians, he was my best friend, as he woke up he noticed me.
  3. -It’s time already Juan? he asked with a Southern Spanish accent.
  4. -Yes Lucas, better get ready and hurry to the meeting, it’s especially important now.
  5. -Finally, give me 10 minutes and I will be at the living room.
  6. I took a bag and put in what I needed, my Heckler and Koch USP¹ pistol, my laptop, my wallet, my cross and several books, a Nacar Colunga Bible²,it's Vulgate counterpart another one called Balzac IV La Comedia Humana by Vergara⁴,I went out of the room and prepared a quick breakfast in the modest kitchen next to the living room, two iberian ham sandwiches and two coffee mugs, I made a quick prayer to the Lord followed by an Our Father as my friend came out of the room fully clothed in his uniform and with a bag, he sat down and took one of the sandwiches
  7. - Are you nervous dude?
  8. - I would be lying if I said I wasn’t man , the odds are against us even with our regiments and our friends at the Navy and the Airforce.
  9. - Yet you look calm, I envy you Juanito, you always look very calm even in situations like this one.
  10. -Believe when say I'm not, I stayed up all night revising the plans, speaking off, do you have them?
  11. -Yeah, I took them while I was changing.
  12. -Good , we don't want anyone to find them here , do you have the map of the city?
  13. -Yes.
  14. -Are you sure?
  15. -Yes.
  16. -Do we have the troop movement plans?
  17. -Yes.
  18. -Do we have the orders for our respective regiments?
  19. -Yes, I have it everything Juan.
  20. -Just let me look to make sure it's there.
  21. -I'm telling you everything is here.
  22. -Lucas…
  23. -Fine knock yourself out.
  24. Lucas handed me his bag and I immediately began revising the documents, he was telling the truth, everything was there, I put them back in the bag and handed it to Lucas.
  25. -See I told you.
  26. -Yes you did, forgive me.
  27. -It's nothing man, I know how you are, if I were in your position I would do the same
  28. -Anyways have you finished?
  29. -Yes.
  30. -Good, now let’s go to the Headquarters.
  31.
  32. We exited the cabin, it was a fresh november morning so it was still dark, we approached the car parked next to the dirt road at the front of the cabin , I took the copilot’s seat and my friend the driver’s seat, he drove us down the road, the cabin was in Sierra de Nigüelas, on the southwestern side of Sierra Nevada , Granada was only a 30 minute drive maximum. We passed through Nigüelas and took the N323-a which would takes us straight to Granada , from there we go to the headquarters MADOC, while the headquarters only concerned itself in training it served another purpose for me and my friend Lucas and several other people in many sections of the Armed Forces of Spain. Lucas was very fidgety the whole journey, he was probably thinking of the worst case scenario and got nervous because of it, it was understandable, many things could go wrong and it was always better to not tempt God. I clutched my rosary which I wore on my neck , it was a rosary handed to me by my mother, it was a 5 decades rosary made in Jerusalem, I always wore it in case I needed to pray or to remind myself who was watching, as we were approaching Granada Lucas asked
  33. -You think someone deserted?- he asked with concern in his voice
  34. -Maybe.- I replied simply
  35. -Only maybe?
  36. -Yes, it is not a full possibility, but it could happen, then again none of the people in our little plan seemed to be the type to backstab a cause they believed in, in that case let it be what God wants.
  37.
  38. 10 minutes passed and we entered Granada, we existed the N323-a and entered the city through the Boulevard of the Innovation and drove to the northern part of the city, the streets still had cars of people either driving back home after a night shift or people starting their shift, the street lights illuminated the streets with an orange light giving an ominous orange tint to the streets, we drove through Zaidin and Acera del Duero, as we neared our destination, a sense of foreboding gripped my heart as if after this day more things would happen that what I previously thought, in some sense I would be proven right taking into account what would happen next.
  39. -We're here Juan.
  40. -Alright, park the car fast, lets not keep our peers waiting.
  41.
  42. We parked in Acera de San Ildefonso and approached the building, it was a square building with two extensions pointing north, if you were to take an aerial photo of the building it would resemble the letter “b”, a man was waiting at the door, supervising the entrance, he was wearing a ballistic vest with the proper camouflage of the Spanish Army and hoisting G36⁴, he talked through a radio in his ear and waited for us to reach the main door of the building, then he talked.
  43. -I already notified them, you are on time.- he informed to which I replied.
  44. -Thank you.
  45. -Anything for Spain.
  46. We entered the building and headed to a meeting room at the end of the hallway to the right, I could feel the excitement in my heart down to my very cells, this was going to be the most serious decision of my life, I steeled my nerves and entered the door on the right, on it was a room with a round table and 9 people seated, from there I could recognize, one was a captain general of the 2nd military region who was our direct superior in this conspiracy, his name was Miguel Romero, the other was a fleet commander in charge of a formidable fleet stationed in Cartagena , his name was Rodolfo de Álava.
  47. -Don Juan, Don Lucas, a pleasure to see you gentlemen here, please take a seat- said commander Miguel.
  48. We took seat and he started the last meeting
  49. -Gentlemen, this meeting marks the beginning of the end of the current regime, a regime that has been complicit on destroying the morals of Spain, on its degradation of the family, on the destruction of the catholic faith and many more crimes against the Fatherland, today we , the Armed Forces , will do our duty to safeguard Spain and her people against this internal enemy. But before we declare our war let us review the plans before we relay our order to our armies, Rodolfo if you would.
  50. -Yes sir, my fleet has already received orders to leave San Fernando and patrol the Alboran Sea incase there is any loyalist ships, the same can be said of my peers in Ferrol.
  51. -Excellent, what about the situation in Galicia and Castile and León?
  52. A man in his forties with a rough look replied to that.
  53. -We have control over a large of the military units, the garrison in Valladolid base and A Coruña base and most of the Civil Guard in both cities, however , we there is still large portions of the army, the police force and the Civil Guard that will move against us when we start our insurrection, they consist of whole two divisiones but I have faith that I can stop them.
  54. - Alright, I hope for our own good you are right, what about the loyalty of the party that will form the future civilian government?
  55. A man in black suit and slender build replied.
  56. - The Falange has already pledged their support for our plan, so has Democracia Nacional and VOX.
  57. - Good, good, what about Madrid?
  58. Two men stood up, the one with the uniform of a civil guard captain answered
  59. -The Civil Guard at Madrid are completely committed to the cause sir.
  60. The other man, a division commander spoke
  61. -However, while a good portion of the troops will join us in taking Madrid, the rest of the army stationed in Madrid will not, as soon as we proclaim our allegiance to the coup, we will be under siege.
  62. -I see, a shame but I did see it coming, this is where the last part comes in, the units in the 2nd military region have pledged loyalty to our cause, and so has most of the 3rd region courtesy of my friend in Valencia.- he turned to us- Now , boys , you are one of the most crucial parts in this plan, you will be the first to declare a state of rebellion here in Granada, you understand your important part in this plan correct?
  63. -Yes sir- I replied swiftly.
  64. -Good-Rodolfo turns to face everyone- gentlemen, the future of Spain is at stake here, the people depend on us to win, but with Providence on our side we will not fail- he saluted- Arriba España!
  65. -Arriba!
  66. -Dismissed.
  67. We all exited the room and went over outside and head to our car to relay our orders by phone and get to the safe house in Rosaleda, I might have looked very tense despite my outward appearance of calmness because Lucas gave me a look of reassurance and an army over my back
  68. -Don’t worry dude, the elements we selected are the best among our men, and if you find yourself in a pickle my tanks will be there to support you should you find resistance too hard for you.
  69. I looked at him in the face with a look of mild concern
  70. -It's not that, I'm concerned over the communications, even with our men tampering with the phone lines and obfuscating conexion they might still find a way to relay the betrayal fast
  71. -I doubt it, this isn't like the movies where someone gets a morse code machine and sends a warning to the army, this is real life, and in real life the truth is that you only need a few people to fuck up the communications of the city.
  72. -I pray that you are right.
  73. -Trust me dude, I am.
  74. As we arrived in Rosaleda we saw the safehouse, it was a rather old building made in the 50s, we entered the building, headed upstairs and immediately we began to call our respective regiments to make the call of rebellion to the units inside the city with the radio we had in the safe house.
  75. -This is colonel Juan Moreno.
  76. -Here lieutenant colonel Julio Vargas, what are your orders sir?
  77. -It is time lieutenant, sound the clarion call.
  78. -Yes sir.
  79. I finished the call as Lucas finished his we waited for our escort to come to this building and go to the town hall of Granada, after ten minutes we started to hear shots in the streets, some of our units were fighting against the local police and were dispatching them as of then, my friend had the hand on his gun, another 10 minutes passed and the shooting stopped and I looked at my wristwatch , ‘6:30am’ it read, ‘the escort should be here soon’ I thought, and speak of the Devil and he shall appear, a knock on the door was heard, Lucas stood up and approached the door to open it.
  80. -Are you our escort to the town hall?
  81. -Yes sir.
  82. -Name and rank soldier.
  83. -Sir , first soldier Fernando García , sir.
  84. -Good, now let us go to the town hall, tell us the situation while you’re at it, Juan , let’s leave.
  85. The man proceeded to tell us what has transpired so far, we have control of the police station and the radio station and jammed the communications of the area, in short terms, we had nearly all of the city in our control thanks to our planning, we only encountered resistance in the police and two other sectors of Granada, things were going smoothly despite my concerns, we exited the building, in front of us was an URO VAMTAC with it's engine still fired up, we entered in the passenger’s seat as the three men escorting us also got in.
  86. -An honour having you here ,sirs- piped the pilot
  87. -It is nothing soldier, take us to the town hall.
  88. -Right away.
  89. The drive to the town hall was a short one, but to me it felt like the longest time of my life, so far nothing has gone wrong, if anything , for a plan depending on the wings of chance favoring us, it was going surprisingly well, everything is going on schedule and soon we will have full control of the city
  90. , and the army still loyal to the State would be too late to react to our treachery, and soon this rebellion will spread. We reached the town hall in time, 7:10 am, the first rays of sunlight started to touch the ground with an ominous light, the town hall stood, and in front were twenty men of my regiment and two tanks from Lucas regiment ready to take the building and hold it against any counterattack from any resistance coming from this city.
  91. Lucas and I stepped out of the car, pistols in hand and headed towards the town hall, a white two story building in the shape of a square, before we entered I ordered my soldiers to enter the building and search it, we didn’t want any nasty surprises to happen, as they registered and took over the building we headed to the congress room, in there was the congressmen and politicians that have been arrested, all of them would be executed, we don’t need any elements of the old order that has damaged this country, but it seems some of the people my men arrested were more obstinate.
  92. -How dare you, you monsters, do you realize what you are doing?-screamed a man trying to escape the grip of the soldiers restraining him, an enraged look on his face was present. Lucas replied, a smirk present in his face.
  93. -Yes, we are , we are doing something that we should have done a long time ago.
  94. -You won’t get away with this, the army will retake Granada and you will be executed, you hear me?
  95. -That would be true if we were the only ones doing this, right now our friends must be doing their part, now Juan if you could call up your boys so we go live that would be wonderful.
  96. I called the people to stop the jamming of the radio stations and to man the television station, after that I signaled the men with a camera that were waiting in the upper part of the parliament with a camera to start the process of going live. They did their work and signaled me that we were live on TV right now, I never was a public speaker, so Lucas took that role, he straightened himself, walked to the center of the room and started speaking.
  97. -Spaniards, today marks the day that the corrupt are brought to justice, today is the day that the liberal order, with it's corruption, it's infighting is brought down by the strength of the army. Today Spain will be brought back to the hands of God, today the destruction of our great nation will be stopped and the ones responsible will get what they deserve, rejoice, for today marks the day this democracy dies and and from the ashes a new Spain, loyal to God, loyal to the people and to it's interests rises, onwards Spaniards, for the Faith and for the Fatherland, grab your weapons and turn them towards the politicians. Viva Cristo Rey! Arriba España!
  98. A short speech, but we didn’t really want to prolong this any longer, we had more pressing matters to attend. The city was taken, now we had to wait for a response from our fellow insurrectionists, I ordered the men to take the arrested outside of the building, all of us knew what was to come, Lucas approached me and put a hand on my shoulder, -Juanito, you sure you want to do it? You never were the type of person to do this
  99. -I must, this will become commonplace for me soon.
  100. -If you say so, but if you need me after this just say so.
  101.
  102. I nodded and I looked at the time again 7:50 , a bit behind schedule but not too serious of a setback , after that I headed to the main entrance of the building , outside of the building the various politicians that were arrested were kneeling down with blindfolds , the pistol was still in my hand , I held it ever since I entered the building , I looked around me too, the soldiers arranged the prisoners in a line, with two soldiers guarding each end of the line , the rest either were in front of the prisoners , about to witness the execution, I walked to the left side of the line and put a gun to the head of one of the prisoners, a middle aged man, bald and with a normal constitution , I felt sick doing this , Lucas was right , this required a certain type of iron heart for this to be done and for someone as me this would be an herculean task and take a toll on my mental health , but I reminded myself that this was necessary , I started to squeeze the trigger and after 3 long seconds the gun was fired , I saw the hole done by the bullet , the corpse of the man fell like a doll that had its strings cut off , ‘One less, eight more to go’ I thought , the execution in general took 2 minutes to be done , at the end I felt an enormous amount of dread and sadness , this was the first time I killed someone , in the army they always say you never get used to ending the life of someone , you just repress the feelings , I couldn’t imagine in my life that I would be doing this more often , but I knew that due to the recent events that it would be the case.
  103. -Everyone , you are dismissed , return to duty at once
  104. The soldiers saluted and went back to their usual duties, I turned back to go back to Lucas and tell him that we should go to reorganize our regiments and plan for the eventual coming of the loyalist government before I could go anywhere, Rodolfo approached me.
  105. -I saw what you did , I have to admit I thought you would refrain from doing it son , this isn't something everyone can do
  106. -I have to at least try general , there will be times I have to execute traitors , enemy prisoners.
  107. -Yes , but keep in mind , this is not something for those that don’t have the heart to do it , no one would blame you if you just sent them to the firing squad so you don’t have to do it yourself.
  108. -I will keep that in mind, I sometimes tend to overlook the obvious.
  109. -Good , anyways , I come bearing good news , it seems our friend in Madrid is more resourceful than we thought , long story short instead of 4000 of our troops in Madrid there is 10,000 troops due to him managing to convince one of the generals to aid him in the coup in Madrid
  110. -That means…
  111. -It means that for now we are the least of the government's worries , sure they will send over some men to Jaen to secure it and try to attack us from the north but it will not be as effective, right now they want to figure out what’s going on and retake Madrid as soon as possible to avoid being seen as incompetent, and due to our strength in the city they are diverting more resource than they would otherwise
  112. -That’s a relief , we have time to rest and review our plans for our next attack, it seems we will get to take the eastern provinces sooner than I expected.
  113. - So it would seem, take me to Lucas and I will give you your new orders.
  114. With that said I lead him back to the building, once inside we went to the congress room where Lucas gave his speech, I opened the door to the room and saw him immediately , he was talking to two men, probably about the situation outside Granada , as he noticed us he dismissed the men and walked towards us.
  115. -General , sir , I didn’t know you were coming
  116. -At ease colonel , I came here out of my own volition , you have new orders
  117. -Sir?
  118. -The man responsible for the coup in Madrid was more resourceful and charismatic than we thought , he made one of the generals of the Central Military Region to desert to our side on the very last minute , which means that whatever force they send here will be significantly weaker than previously thought.
  119. -That's great news indeed sir.
  120. -Yes, so here are your orders, we have to extend our coup fast now that we have the chance to consolidate our position here, you will take your regiments first to Almeria and then Jaen.
  121. -Sir, why not separate us and take the respective provinces ourselves, or even stay here and guard against the inevitable enemy attack?
  122. -For your first question is because you two have demonstrated great teamwork in the making of the plan, your regiments synergize very well , if you are formidable alone, together few can stop you two, as for your second question , you do not have to worry about that , I already have the perfect man to organize the defense , any more questions
  123. -No sir
  124. -Perfect , while you were taking Granada and making your speech I had several of my men taking the adjacent municipalities , you will got to Monachil , it will serve as your command center in this campaign , I already made the necessary arrangements for it to be so , your transport is waiting outside , dismissed.
  125. We saluted and went outside the building again , sure enough a car was waiting for us , it was a jeep commonly used by officers of the Spanish Army, specifically a Santana Aníbal , we got into the passenger's seat and the pilot started to drive.
  126. -Well Juanito looks like we made it thus far eh?
  127. -Yep , now we have to make our plans for Almeria , it shouldn’t be too difficult
  128. -Hey , it would be funny if it happened like in one of your animes you watch and we wake up in a different world.
  129. -Now you are just speaking nonsense.
  130. -I’m just saying...
  131. -Yeah , yeah , but now that I think about it there is one I would like to go if I was to be put in.
  132. -And you said I was speaking nonsense.
  133. -Shut it you ass.
  134. Lucas laughed for some seconds , after that the journey to Monachil was a quiet one , it wasn't very far from the city but not too close should we need to escape, the driver parked next to the town hall and we immediately started to head inside , we headed to one of the offices available in the second room and started to work , we must have been sucked into our work because when we decided on a strategy it was already 4:30.
  135. -Damn , it really took some time
  136. -You shouldn’t be surprised , we are uses to this already , be glad we managed to finish before night.
  137. -I guess you’re right , well, after lunch we will go to the inn and revise our plans and get our sleep , sounds like a plan?
  138. -Yes
  139. With that said we went over to get lunch in one of the restaurants , the meal was frugal for me but rather lavish for Lucas , he always insisted on a big meal ‘you can’t hold back in a work like this, you never know when will be the last time you can have a good for a long time’ he always said , I saw it as unnecessary , after the meal we went to the inn Los Cachorros , we booked two rooms and headed inside mine and started to revise our plans and preparing any contingencies , when we were done it was 8:45 in the night.
  140. -Well I don’t know about you but I'm heading to the bed.
  141. -So am I , good night Lucas
  142. -Good night Juan
  143. He went over to his room as I left my clothes on a chair that was nearby and my bag next to the bed , as I drifted to sleep I began to wonder on what Lucas said at the jeep ‘Another world huh, that would be interesting , and a good way to start from zero’, I finally entered the world of dreams with that last thought , little did I know that the Lord was hearing me and decided to humor me , because when I woke up , I couldn't recognize the room I was in , for my bedsheets were purple and my room was of solid stone when I woke up.
