- *Sourced from ROCHEWORLD by Robert L. Forward.*
- Until I get my hands and brain on the sequels, the information here will be unfinished, as I've only read the first book.
- GARGANTUA:
- A giant planet four times the mass and three halves the density of Jupiter.
- Larger rocky core than Jupiter.
- Seven-day rotation period results in Earth-like weather patterns and minimal cloud banding.
- There is an atmospheric volcano on the south pole.
- Emits more heat than it receives.
- Surface temp near freezing point of water... perhaps white water clouds with ammonia and tholin smog in colder spots?
- Many giant cyclones spawned at the equator which move north.
- Its moons, in decreasing size order: Zapotec, Zouave, Zulu, Zuni, Zion, Zen, Zoroaster, Zwingli, and Zeus.
- Its minor moons are named with a Z-number, such as Z1, Z2, Z3. Some are interesting enough for proper names: Zinc, Zoo, Zygote, and Zipcode.
- It is hard to tell the order of the satellites given that the initial flyby pass is out of order. It is rather a shame that the epilogue of the book, a hearing presented by scientists about the Prometheus expedition, does not include more detailed information about these worlds.
- Zeus: a small moon. Outermost dwarf moon.
- Zapotec: Larger than Mercury, with a Mars-like atmosphere and surface. Volcanic chain ringing the south pole. Equatorial rift valley going 200 degrees around the planet, 15km deep. Outermost large moon.
- Zen and Zion: Two planetoids within the orbit of Zapotec. Possible coorbital.
- Zouave: Orange hazy titan-like world. "All up and down, no flat areas to indicate seas." Too warm for liquid methane. Water/CO2 snow covers the surface with a smoothly rolling landscape. Three atmospheres.
- Zuni: A little larger than Earth's moon. Has a thick atmosphere. 40 degrees celsius. Water clouds and thunderstorms. Solid rocky surface with lots of shallow liquid water lakes. Strange colors, perhaps picked up from smog from Zouave (reddish/orange tholins?). A miniature Earth, would later be called Eden.
- Zulu: Innermost large moon. Somewhat like Ganymede. Thick layer of striated ice over a deep ocean. But very tectonically active, with ice geysers. As active as Io. Extremely powerful magnetic field, around 100 times stronger than Earth's. Possibly surrounded by a gas torus. It has an atmosphere thick enough to allow for liquid rain to fall from the geysers.
- Zoroaster and Zwingli: Coorbital minor moons in a horseshoe orbit.
