  5. Chapter 11
  6.
  7.
  8.
  9. >”PHHHHFFFFTTTT! Uh Gods! Ugh! Fuck! Phhhfftt, that tastes fucking terrible!”
  10. >”Stop being….a baby Tyler……..Isn’t that ……..what………………..”
  11. >”This isn’t the same dammit!……oh gods I am going to puke….Yup…I am gon-…...”
  12. >”Hah! I knew it…………stupid baby sis…………..”
  13.
  14. >You sit idly on the ground with your knees pulled to your chest as you watch Tyler projectile vomit a vibrant orange waterfall down the side of an abandoned trash can covered in peeling bumper stickers
  15. >Tinker barely steadies herself with her heavily bandaged left hand on the chrome grill of a box truck a couple yards away from the right side of the station
  16. >”Hah……stupid……..” Tinker mumbles nodding in an out, “……Stupid…..”
  17. >Tinker dry heaves a couple more times before collapsing backwards onto the dirt, breathing heavily, “Fuck…..That was disgusting…..damn….bleh…...ppphhhfftt”
  18. >”Your not going to get anything out of that old box truck. The gas in it probably went stale a while ago” said Angel sitting on a tipped over steel drum in front of the station
  19. >”Why the fuck….phhhfffttt……didn’t you tell me that before I went an wrapped my lips on the…ppphhhfftt…… fucking hose?” said Tyler spitting into the dirt
  20. >Angel just shrugged as she flicked the ash off of the lit swisher in her hand “Guess I had my mind…..on other things. You know, like how the hell we’re all going to get out of here with our bikes on fumes. None of the pumps work and everything left over so far has been bad”
  21. >You stare down at the poorly drawn hyena face you sketched into the dirt with a piece of rock a couple minutes ago
  22. >Its mouth strikes a familiar grin, its pupils made of two pebbles, one brown and one white
  23. >”Hey kid!….uh? kid?”
  24. >You look up at the large hyena in front of you holding two dark red gas containers in each paw
  25. >Your eyes focus in on Riley’s concerned looking face
  26. >”You alright there Twigs?” said Riley nodding her head towards the crude drawing in front of you
  27. >You sweep the image away with a swipe of your right boot, “Yeah…I’m fine”
  28. >Riley eyeballs you with a look of suspicion, “Your not fine Twigs, don’t lie to me. Your part of the sisters now, you can’t just brood alone in a corner”
  29. >You search your mind for a response to Riley’s odd combination of motherly tone and dictator, “Yeah, your right…look…..Riley….well….I can’t get over the feeling that Mace’s death and all that happened back in Sturgis was my fault. That was all my fault….wasn’t it? It was me that caused this mess.”
  30. >Riley takes a deep sigh and closes her eyes before setting the gas canisters on the ground next to her
  31. >She gets down on a knee and looks you sternly in the eye, “What happened at Sturgis was not your fault, nor was Mace’s death. Never was, Never will be, you hear me?”
  32. >You turn away from the giant hyena’s piercing gaze
  33. >”Hey! Look at me” said Riley snapping her large fingers in front of your face
  34. >You turn back to her
  35. >”The whole thing was just old blood coming to the surface. If anyone here is to blame, it’s me. I should have seen this shit coming a mile away with the Bastards and I didn’t…You know why?” said Riley relaxing her furrowed brow a bit
  36. >”Why?” you say with melancholy
  37. >”Because I had my head stuck up my ass thinking I knew for a fact that the Bastards were just a bunch of two-bit punks like in the past. I blinded myself because I only saw what I wanted to see…..Do you see the connection here Twigs?” said Riley relaxing a bit more
  38. >You chew on what Riley said for a minute before making the connection and nodding to her
  39. ”You don’t want me to blind myself?”
  40. >”That’s right. Now, remember what I said in the bathroom? Mace would want you to be strong for her. Not moping around about her death. She’d want us to buckle up and move on, understand?” said Riley with a small grin
  41. >You nod your head again and try to fake a small smile, “Yeah…gotcha”
  42. >Riley smiles at you before grabbing the red gas cans and standing back up, “Take sometime if you need it Twigs, When you’re ready, come on over with the rest of the Sisters.”
  43. ”Right….” You say as Riley walks towards the remaining sisters standing in a circle between the gas pumps and bikes
  44. >”HEY TYLER! GET YOUR SISTER OVER HERE AND TRY NOT TO CHOKE ON YOUR OWN VOMIT! EVERYONE ON ME!” yelled Riley as she joined the circle of Sisters
  45. >Tyler on all fours, still dry heaving, gives her a wobbly thumbs up while Tinker lays halfway slumped on the hood of the box truck
  46. >You pick up a sharp piece of rock as you start to draw the hyena face again
  47. >You stop as you put the brown and white pebbles back where the eyes used to be
  48. >The pebbles stare back at you once more
  49. >You brush the image out of the dirt and stand up
  50. >You walk over to the box truck
  51. >You grab Tinker’s left wrist and sling her arm across your shoulder, bearing her weight
  52. >Tinker wakes up from her light heroin coma and mumbles a couple words to you as you try to get her to move her feet towards the group of Sisters
  53. >She only shuffles a couple half-hearted inches
  54. >”WAKE THE FUCK UP!” you yell into Tinker’s left ear as her head bolts upright, “What?...huh?......Oh hey skins…Where we going sexyboy?…heh heh….You want me…..to tap that assssss……heh…heh…..” mumbles Tinker
  55. “We need to get over to the others, now pick up your damn feet” you say kicking the back of her heels with your right foot
  56. >”Ok! OK!....jeeeeeezzzzzz….left foot…..right….left………..right…..” Tinker commanded sluggishly down at her feet
  57. >”Were gonna be here all day If you plan on dragging her doped up ass anywhere” said Angel crushing her cigarillo out on the peeling hood of the box truck before scooping Tinker up into her arms
  58. >”You go get the other one, I got sleepy here” said Angel cradling the teenage hyena in her arms
  59. >”They stole…….my finger……Aunty Angel….they-“ said Tinker holding her heavily bandaged left paw up to Angel’s face
  60. >”Shut the fuck up Tinker and get your hand outta my face” said Angel as she walked away with Tinker in her arms
  61. >You look back at the disheveled mess still dry heaving on the ground
  62. >You walk up to Tyler and unsling your canteen off of your shoulder
  63. >”Here, give your throat a break before you blow a damn vessel” you say holding the canteen out to her
  64. >Tyler quickly swipes the canteen from your hand, chugging the last of your water without a second thought and handing it back to you with a sigh before collapsing onto her back once again
  65. >You try your best to wipe away some of the vomit Tyler left you on the mouth piece with the hem of your shredded t shirt
  66. >”Thanks……sexyboy…..fuck…..the others make that….. shit look so easy….. I was just…. trying to help” said Tyler trying to regain her breath
  67. >You screw the cap back onto your canteen and re-sling it over your shoulder before reaching a helping hand out to the hyena, “Yeah I know, now come on, the others are waiting on us”
  68.
  69. >You and Tyler form up into the circle of Sisters as the chatting dies down
  70. >”Whelp, that’s settled then” said Riley as soon as you get into a spot
  71. >”What’s settled? We just got here. It better not involve mouthin’ up any more gas. I am fucking done for life with that shit,” said Tyler
  72. >Riley crosses her arms, “Well, it just so happens that it does. Its fine though, Angel said you two are on top of it”
  73. >Tyler glares over at Angel as she gives her back a two-finger salute and a smirk
  74. >Tyler mumbles curses under her breath at Angel while you look towards Riley, “So…mind bringing us up to date?”
  75. >”Yeah, sure, pretty much we’ll have Angel and Pukey here siphon off the rest of the gas from our bikes and funnel it into Delilah’s little black café racer over there.” Says riley nodding over to Delilah’s motorcycle
  76. >You look over at the hooded figure of Delilah on Riley’s right side, as straight and unmoving as a scarecrow in a windless field
  77. >Tyler’s mumbles grow louder as Riley continues, “Since Delilah is the lightest one here and her bike gets the best gas, she’ll go on ahead to the next gas station, fill up the canisters and bring them back”
  78. >”Hey! Are you callin’ me and sis here fat?! We’re the youngest! Shouldn’t we-“ yelled Tyler before Dee, standing next to her, whaps her in the back of the head with a flat left paw, “You two are also, the most unhinge and undisciplined, now shut up and let your mother speak”
  79. >Tyler glares up at Dee for a second before looking down at her feet as she rubs the back of her head with her right paw
  80. >”Thank you Dee, now where was I….Oh yeah. While Delilah is away we’ll set up camp in the station. That way we can recoup and scavenge for any supplies still here. If all goes well, we’ll all be off again by tomorrow morning”
  81. “What about the Bastards from Sturgis? Aren’t you afraid that they’ll be looking for us?” You say shifting your weight
  82. >”I think we…did enough to get them off our tails. If anyone comes by, we’ll have the advantage of shelter and surprise, we still got a decent amount of firepower left over from Sturgis” said Riley patting the large revolver nestled in the front of her pants, “Now is that all clear?
  83. >Everyone says yes except for Tinker, drooling on herself as she leans against Angel’s shoulder
  84. >”Any questions?” says Riley
  85. >The group remains silent
  86. >”Ok everyone. Break off!” said Riley dismissing the group
  87. >Everyone slowly scatters off in multiple directions except for you and Delilah, both standing perfectly still across from one another
  88. >You get the feeling of eyes on you as you look up to see Delilah silently staring at you from under the rim of her dark hood
  89. > She turns her eyes from you and walks over to her motorcycle
  90. >You reach under your jacket an quickly inspect the magazine, feeling its heft
  91. *”About half- full”
  92. > You slam the magazine back into the uzi as the air fills with the smell of rank puke and dry-rotted tire rubber
  93.
  94. >After an hour or so of Angel and Tyler siphoning the remaining gas from everyone’s bike, Delilah’s motorcycle was finally ready
  95. >Everyone waved her goodbye as Delilah sped off over the horizon and out of sight
  96. > A kind of quiet settled over the camp as she left, not even the twins made a sound
  97. >Though that might have been more due to exhaustion and being too high to move
  98. >It didn’t take long for the Sisters to scavenge through the gas station
  99. >Everything that hadn’t been stolen years ago was decades rotten or broken
  100. >Anything that couldn’t be used was piled up against the front of the store as a makeshift barricade
  101. >The supplies that you did have wouldn’t last long outside a couple days max
  102. >And if Delilah didn’t return…..
  103. >…
  104. >…
  105. >…
  106. >You didn’t even want think what plan B would entail...
  107. >In the evening, everyone moved their bikes from the front of the gas station to the back, just incase anyone from Sturgis drove by and recognized the Sisters logo
  108. >Most of the rest of the day was spent silently napping as each Sister took an hour shift looking out through the barricade windows at the front pumps and road
  109. >The next couple hours were a blur of maddeningly bad sleep and a couple shifts mostly spent internally complaining to yourself about your hunger-induced headache
  110. >You see nothing except for a couple of non-sentient deer scamper across the road
  111. >Angel relieves you of your shift as you plop face down into another semi-lucid nap
  112. >Your dreams are filled with memories of home cooked food and quick nightmares of millions of tiny icy, shadow-like, creatures crawling all over your skin
  113. >You’re shaken awake by Dee, “Hey. Darling, are you ok? You were thrashing around pretty hard there”
  114. >You sit up and rub the sleep from your eyes before looking around the pitch black store, “Yeah…I am fine….is it my turn again?”
  115. >”Unfortunately, it is darling” said Dee as she helps you to your feet before brushing the loose dirt from the back of your jacket, “Don’t worry though, Delilah should be back around sunrise so this should be your last shift”
  116. >”Goodie” you say more sarcastically then you meant to sound
  117. >Dee gives you a worrying pat on the shoulder before she heads off back to her own sleeping bag
  118. >You pick up your uzi laying next to your bag and get into position near the front of the store
  119. >You sit down on a moldy, old, rolling desk chair as you gaze into the pitch-black nothingness spread out before you
  120. >You rock anxiously in the chair as you bounce your right leg till its sore, anything to keep yourself from dozing off
  121. >Just as your eyelids dip, you hear the distant hum of motorcycle engines coming from the east
  122. >You prop yourself up and level your uzi to the road as you see the taillights of about twenty large motorcycles zoom past the gas station
  123. >You hear the motorcycles continue off down the road as you slowly lower your gun back into your lap
  124. >You breath a sigh of relief before you go cold with a stray thought, *”What if they catch Delilah on her way back?”
  125. >You feel frozen to the chair as your mind races
  126. >You get up and rush over to a pile of discarded junk in the far corner of the room
  127. >*”COME ON COME ON COME ON, I KNOW I SAW IT HERE EARLIER. GODDAMIT WHERE IS IT?!?!?!”
  128. >The other sisters slowly awaken from their sleep, asking you what’s going on
  129. >Finally, you find what you are looking for at the bottom of the trash pile
  130. >An old, dirty, white plastic flare gun with a snapped off handle
  131. >You run out the front door while popping open the chamber
  132. >You see a dusty cartridge sitting in the chamber, its pin untouched
  133. >You close the breach, point it towards the sky and cock back the hammer
  134. >You pull the trigger
  135. >You wait a couple seconds before the flare rockets out of the gun with a loud bang, echoing far off into the distance
  136. >You can see the reddish orange glow of the flare momentarily light up the night sky
  137. >Riley grabs you by the back of the jacket, yanking you around to her face as you drop the flare gun, “Why in the love of fuck did you just do that? Your answer better be fucking amazing”
  138. >You look over at the front door to the gas station as more of the Sisters come out to see the commotion
  139. “A gang of motorcycles just drove by here. I was afraid the Bastards would run into Delilah on her way back” you quickly blurted out
  140. >”And how did you know they were Bastards?” said Riley snarling at you
  141. “………….I didn’t?”
  142. >Riley huffs angrily in your face before she drags you back into the gas station by your neck, “Everyone grab your gun and get into your fucking positions, were about to have some company”
  143.
  144. >Everyone quickly grabs their guns and ammo from the sides of their sleeping bags before lining up against the barricade
  145. >From left to right you see Eve with her pistol, both of the twins with their dual pistols, Dee with her tommy gun and Angel with Mace’s old slug shotgun
  146. >You walk up to the barricade and settle yourself in the middle between Tyler and Dee
  147. >You can already hear the distant hum of engines, from the west, coming closer every second
  148. >Riley walks the line, scanning over everyone as she dons her bulletproof vest and Mace’s M-16
  149. >”I’ll be perched on the roof. Keep quiet until I give the first shot, does everyone understand?” said Riley slamming a magazine into the rifle and pulling back on the charging handle
  150. >Unanimous whispers of “yes” go down the line
  151. >”Good, now keep your head low and your eyes peeled Sisters” said Riley walking out the front door and around the back to the roof ladder
  152. >For about fifteen minutes no one spoke or moved, the only sound being the occasional shifting of feet or hand on a gun grip
  153. >Your hear the engines drawing nearer as you tighten the grip on your gun
  154. >Twenty motorcycles come from the west and pull into the crumbling gravel parking lot in front of the old rusted pumps a couple yards away from the front of the store
  155. >You can feel everyone on either side of you all simultaneously suck in their breath
  156. >The bikes one by one shut off their engines as their riders dismount
  157. >The night blurs the rider’s features into a series of black figures but one thing immediately catches your eye
  158. >Horns
  159. >Almost every one of the riders has a large set of bovine horns
  160. >The Bastards, you knew it
  161. >You see one of the bigger bulls walk forward as the others follow close behind
  162. >The veins on your forehead begin to beat as you clench your teeth with each step the bulls take
  163. *”Come on Riley. What the fuck is keeping you. Take the fucking shot, they’re right fucking in front of us”
  164. >You see the largest bull crouch down and pick something white off the ground
  165. >The flare gun
  166. >The bull pulls a revolver out of his shoulder holster as he yells, “Spread ou-“ before his left eye and most of the back of his head burst into gore
  167. >The rest of the Bastards try to scatter but not before half of them are immediately gunned down by a barrage of fire from the gas station
  168. >The mix of echoing gunfire inside the station rattles against the space between your skull and brain as you fire round after round at the shadowy figures
  169. >The survivors dive for cover behind the rusted pumps and soon return a hail of bullets
  170. >Sparks from ricocheting rounds erupt from the barricade, popping off like tiny metallic fireworks all around you and the Sisters
  171. >A loud grunt comes from your right through the sound of gunfire
  172. >You look over quickly as Angel stammers back from the barricade for a second, holding her chest, before throwing herself back against it once more as she continues to fire
  173. >You hear a short scream as you look to your left and see Eve dropping to her knees, her right forearm shredded to pieces, sinews and tendons hanging loosely from the gaping wounds
  174. >You turn back forward, switching your uzi over to full auto as you unload the last of your ammo into the dark
  175. >Everyone finishes their magazines as the smell burnt gunpowder and fresh blood fill the air
  176. > You try to squint and readjust your eyes to the darkness as the rest of the Sisters reload
  177. >You scan over the short distance checking for any movement
  178. >Nothing….You try to make out any humanoid shapes but nothing stirs other than a few squirming, half-dead bodies on the ground
  179. >”Angel? ANGEL!?” you hear Dee say
  180. >You look to your right side to see Dee shaking Angel’s motionless body slumped against the barrier
  181. >You look back over at Eve as you see the Twins frantically trying to help the injured doctor stop the flow of blood from her arm
  182. >Out of the corner of your eye you see three dark figures rush from behind the old pumps and hop on their bikes
  183. >Your mind goes red as you rush over to Angel, grabbing her shotgun and shell ammo belt lying on top of the barrier
  184. >You walk out the door as you hear Dee yell out for you to come back
  185. >You load the six remaining slugs from the belt into the empty shotgun before pumping a shell into the receiver
  186. >The three remaining bulls look frantically over at you as two of the three motorcycles rev to life
  187. >You quickly fire off two slugs into the engines of the running two motorcycles, instantly killing their motors
  188. > The third Bastard pulls a revolver from his holster and points it at you but is quickly gunned down by shots from the station
  189. >The remaining two bulls drop their bikes and sprint for the road
  190. >You line up and fire two shots as both bulls crumple to the ground
  191. >You quickly turn around and sweep your eyes over the area for any movement
  192. >You see Dee running out of the gas station up to you
  193. >Her face is a mess of tears and pure hysterical anger
  194. >Before you can say anything you hear the humming of engines coming from the east
  195. >Dee gnashes her teeth with a livid breathe as she runs past you, out onto the highway
  196. >You rush after her as you see a beaded row of lights coming over the horizon
  197. >Dee presses the stock of her tommy gun firm against her shoulder as she levels it to the oncoming bikes
  198. >You feel every synapse in your mind screaming at you to get off of the highway
  199. >You plant your feet firmly onto the asphalt as you cycle your second to last shell into the receiver
  200. >You both stand motionless as the first rays of the morning sun bloom over the horizon behind the oncoming bikers
  201. >In the early morning glow you see them more clearly
  202. >More horns
  203. >The Bastards
  204. >Ten more of them
  205. >Dee fires first, letting out a couple short bursts into the oncoming motorcycles
  206. >Three of them fall from her volley as you fire off a slug at a Bastard in line with you
  207. >The handlebars of the bull’s motorcycle explode into shrapnel as the slug strikes him in the middle of the chest
  208. >You eject the smoking shell and cycle your last round into the receiver as Dee drops two more of the Bastards
  209. >You quickly take aim and fire at a Bull to the right
  210. >The slug enters the front tire of the bull’s bike before lodging itself into the front of the engine
  211. >The tire explodes, sending the bull over his handlebars onto the racing asphalt at a hundred miles per hour as the bike rolls onto his head, caving in his skull
  212. >Dee fires off her last burst into another bull before tossing her empty tommy gun to the ground and picking up a long piece of discarded rebar next to her
  213. >The last bull takes a quick look back, seeing his fallen comrades scattered over the stretch of road
  214. >He twists the accelerator all the way back, gunning the bike directly at you
  215. >You try to move out of the way but it’s too late
  216. >In a couple split seconds Dee leaps sideways and lances the Bull through the chest with the long piece of rebar, throwing him off the bike
  217. >But the bike doesn’t stop
  218. >It careens into you at full speed, ramming you over the top of the handlebars like a ragdoll
  219. >You feel multiple ribs snap in an instant before landing on your back
  220. >The unmanned motorcycle continues on for a minutes before collapsing sideways into a ditch on the opposite side of the highway
  221. >Your vision goes blurry as your entire chest is raked with wave after wave of stabbing pain
  222. >You look over to see Dee with one foot on the lanced bull, lying on his back as she firmly grasps the top of the gore covered rebar
  223. >A look of perverse joy stretches across Dee’s wide-eyed face
  224. >”Yes! That’s right! Scream for me! I want to hear you scream! SCREAM FOR ME!” said Dee as she rotated rebar, the bull’s speared intestines slowly wrapping around it like a maypole
  225. >The bull screamed as she leans forward on the pole with all her weight, “YES! THAT’S IT! MORE!”
  226. >You try to mumble out a cry to Dee as she swirls the rebar forcefully around in the bull’s guts
  227. >Dee can’t hear you; completely lost in her own world of revenge
  228. >You feel two strong arms pick you up off the ground
  229. >You look up into Riley’s tired looking face
  230. >You try to say something to her but only manage a couple nonsensical mumbles before your chest delivers a painful shock to your insides
  231. >Your vision fades in and out as Riley carries you slowly back to the gas station
  232. >Riley’s face grows paler with each step
  233. >”Rrr….Riii…..Rilll…….” you barely choke out as Riley crosses through the front door of the gas station
  234. >”…Ri..” you choke out again as she lays you gently down on the concrete floor
  235. ”…….Riley?….”
  236. >A smile crosses her face as she collapses onto her side next to you, her slung M-16 clattering to the ground from her shoulder
  237. >You look down and see two large growing bloodstains across her left thigh and stomach
  238. >The twins rush over to Riley’s side, trying to shake her as your vision grows dark and fades out
  239.
  240. >”NO! no no no no no no no no FUCK! NO!….”
  241. >”Riley! Wake up! Wake up! You can’t leave us……You can’t leave us mom…….not again……mother…………please…………………..”
