  1. Some of you might ask yourselves: What exactly is a square shiny? The specific distinction between star and square shinies got introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Usually, when a shiny Pokémon appears, it sparkles with little stars showing. Square shinies, like the name suggests, show little squares when they sparkle. Please note that this is not visible in Pokémon Sapphire (or any other game before generation 8). It will be visible however if you transfer these Pokémon upwards to Pokémon Sword and Shield. For those of you who really want to know the specifics: The game determines shininess via PID (after generation 2). To put it in laymans terms, the game does an XOR calculation, if the result is less than 8, the Pokémon is shiny. If the result is exactly 0, the Pokémon will be a square shiny.
